If you're reading this, then you might not be watching HBO Signature's The Wire HD marathon as it covers season four, which some consider to be the best in the series. Of course, you can jump in anywhere you want with the remastered version thanks to HBO Go, although series creator David Simon points to the 4x3 DVD release as the best way to see the show as originally intended. This week there's the usual slew of New Year's Eve celebrations and bowl games (with the addition of a new playoff wrinkle), ABC is kicking off 2015 with its new show Galavant, and PBS has season five of Downton Abbey. Netflix's introduction to 2015 starts with every episode of Friends (but watch Bad Boys, The Breakfast Club, Spaceballs and Happy Gilmore before they fade out Wednesday night), while on Blu-ray we have Denzel Washington in The Equalizer and Kevin Smith's horror flick Tusk. Gamers can dig in to the Halo 5 beta, but there's not much else new out there for now. Look after the break to check out each day's highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

We knew season three of Downton Abbey was coming to Amazon Prime Instant Video as an exclusive, but it looks like those episodes have arrived on the subscription streaming service one day ahead of schedule. Starting today, Prime members can watch all three seasons of the Masterpiece Classic drama at no additional charge. Not signed up? Hold your binge-viewing parties now, because Prime Instant Video will soon be the only subscription streaming site to offer the show, period.

Anyone who's planning to catch up on Downton Abbey on their preferred service may want to plan a viewing marathon very soon: Amazon has struck a deal to become the exclusive home of the period drama on subscription-based streaming video platforms. Starting June 18th, only those Amazon Prime Instant Video members will have access to the third season and beyond on a commercial service without paying per show. The terms don't stop there -- seasons one and two will be pulled from other services later on in the year. While we're sure Kindle Fire owners will be happy, the move won't thrill those who want more of a choice as to how they keep up on their pseudo-historical intrigue. Update: We've since gotten in touch with a source near the agreement that supports what The Verge heard: season one will disappear from Netflix on July 1st.
