  • Hierarchical browsing work-arounds

One of the bigger annoyances many folks have complained about with Leopard is the loss of hierarchical file browsing of folders in the Dock. Of course in Leopard you get Stacks, with all their fancy fanning and gridding, but you lose the ability to right-click a folder and dig into the sub-folders. As a solution/work-around many folks have suggested the venerable Dock replacement Drag Thing. But it has a lot more features and at $29 is a bit of overkill just to get that one feature back. So instead, you might have a look at the free Hierarchy from Charles O'Rourke.Hierarchy is a dead simple application. All it does is create a little floating HUD-style vertical palette onto which you can drop your folders. Clicking on those folders opens them in the Finder, but better yet right-click generates the old Tiger-style hierarchical menus. Of course, this adds another (potentially annoying) palette window to your desktop, but it does a good job at its small task.Hierarchy is a free download from Charles O'Rourke.

DragThing, which could have my favorite Mac app name ever, is a launcher that will open up anything you (surprise!) drag to it, and can also work as a Dock alternative and a visual clipboard. The idea is that everything you need is just a click (or a hotkey press) away. And now, this thing has hit version 5.9, with full support for Leopard (an entire week early!), and a host of other updates. Actually I'm not sure how much a "host" is, but there's a lot-- a new look, icon reflections (optional, in case you don't want things too shiny), new themes, live previews, and the ability to insert and rearrange items in the Dock using just the eponymous dragging action. Very slick.DragThing is available over on the website-- a single license is $29, and you can get five and ten packs of licenses for $99 and $149. Trust me-- it's a real drag.[via DF]

Pangea Software is best known for their games, but now they've brought out a new productivity utility called TabMeister. Basically it allows you to add pull out tabs to the edge of your screen which "act like pop-up folders containing icons of all of the things you want to have access to." In addition, as you mouse over the contents of a the tab, the icons and names are zoomed on your desktop. In some ways TabMeister looks a lot like the recently retired Drop Drawers with a bit of added eye candy. So anybody who previously used Drop Drawers but doesn't want to follow the upgrade path to DragThing should have a look at TabMeister.TabMeister is $14.95 and a demo is available.

The venerable (more than 11 years since v1.0!) launch utility DragThing has been revised to version 5.7.2, adding three new dock themes and clipping tools while squashing a few bugs. I've been a DragThing user since v2 and despite the siren call of QuickSilver, DT still holds a place in my heart and on my desktop.DragThing is shareware, with license costs ranging from $29 for a single user to $2000 for a worldwide license (if you plan on running it from orbit, you may want to talk to your lawyer). The update is free for existing users of v5.

Dragthing, the popular utility by TLA systems, has been updated to version 5.6.4. Dragthing can be used as an alternative to Mac OS X's dock, with more features. In fact, it allows you create several docks that you can organize and arrange as you wish, and access via the tabbed interface or user-defined hotkeys. It's very useful, and I loved it in the Mac OS 9 days.Version 5.6.4 fixes several bugs, including: An issue with Intel Macs incorrectly displaying the number of unread messages on application icons A problem on Intel Macs with the highlighting of running applications Issues with moving dock files containing text clippings between Intel and PowerPC Macs Version 5.6.4 requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later, is universal and a free upgrade for registered users. A single license of Dragthing will cost you $29US.
