Sony's DualShock is a good controller. Its Emmy award-winning design has hardly changed over the last couple of decades. It had a run of minor refinements until the DualShock 4 added a touchpanel, some fancy lights and a grippier texture. But things have moved on. PlayStation's biggest rival, Xbox, has a high-end controller for top-level gamers, while expensive third-party options from SCUFF and Hori have proved there are better ways to play PS4. Enter the unimaginatively named Back Button Attachment, aimed at giving your six-year-old DualShock 4 a few new tricks. But just a few.
PlayStation 4 update delivers 16-player parties and Android Remote Play for all
Sony has rolled out its latest Playstation 4 update, and as it teased earlier, it includes an improved Party function. You can now double up the number of participants to 16 from eight, making playing sessions more of a, well, party. On top of that, Sony has improved the feature's network connectivity and audio quality, while increasing accessibility with a new chat transcription feature. The latter converts all your Party chats to text, while text can be spoken by a robot on the PS4 Second Screen app.
8BitDo adapter adds wireless controller support to PlayStation Classic
The PlayStation Classic, Sony's retro console that includes 20 PS1 games, arrived last week, and for those of us who prefer to play a little further away from the TV than wired controllers allow, a solution is on the way. Later this month, 8BitDo is releasing a USB adapter that lets you use its own wireless controllers with the console, along with Sony's DualShock 3 and 4, Bluetooth Xbox controllers, Switch Pro, Wii U Pro and even Joy-Cons.
Sony has some colorful new DualShock 4 pads for your PS4
The DualShock 4 wireless controller has been kicking around for a while now, so it was only a matter of time before PlayStation did something to give it a little marketing boost. And what's the easiest way to do that? New colors, of course. Joining the already extensive color lineup are four new schemes: Berry Blue, Sunset Orange, Blue Camo and Copper. They'll be available across retailers in the US and Canada from September, at $65 USD / $75 CAD each. Take a look at the new colors below.
Limited edition PS4 celebrates 500 million PlayStation consoles sold
Sony revealed that it has sold over 525 million PlayStation systems worldwide since the console first launched 24 years ago, and that it's doing something special to commemorate it. It unveiled the "500 Million Limited Edition PS4 Pro" with a dark blue translucent shell, complete with a matching DualShock 4 controller, PlayStation Camera, vertical stand and mono headset.

Denise Chaudhari had never touched a gamepad before stepping onto Microsoft's campus as a contractor. The first woman to join the Xbox team, Chaudhari had studied ergonomics and industrial design at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design but didn't have any experience with joysticks. That's part of why Xbox's Jim Stewart was so excited to bring her on board: Her ideas wouldn't be based on preconceived notions of what a gamepad had to be. It was early 2000, and the company was preparing to enter the gaming world with the Xbox. In Nov. 2001, the console was released in North America alongside the Duke, a controller that seemed comically large compared to its contemporaries. Within a year, the oversize gamepad was abandoned by Microsoft and replaced with a smaller model, but the Duke has had an impact on every controller since.

PlayStation's latest gamepad is made especially for kids
PlayStation's next step toward console-gaming domination is getting its gamepads in smaller hands. To do that, it has partnered with vaunted accessory-maker Hori on the Mini Wired Gamepad for the PlayStation 4. Sony says that the controller is 40 percent smaller than the standard DualShock 4, and, honestly, a bulk of that size difference probably came from lopping off the DS4's handles. Its 10-foot cables should be long enough to reach most couches, too.
Nissan made a DualShock-controlled car to promote 'GT Sport'
Professional racer Jann Mardenborough recently got the chance to live every Gran Turismo fan's dream: he drove a real car using a DualShock 4 controller from aboard a helicopter. That car was a modified Nissan GT-R aptly called the GT-R /C, made to celebrate the automaker's 20th year of involvement with Gran Turismo and GT Sport's upcoming launch. The vehicle is fitted with four robots -- one each to control the steering wheel, transmissions, brakes and throttle -- and a micro-computer to receive commands from the unmodified DualShock.
Sony made a gigantic PS4 controller no one can use
Sony has eSports-tailored PlayStation 4 controllers, but aside from that, the gaming juggernaut hasn't made any major changes to the gamepad that shipped with the PS4. But as a Japanese promo for the recent Parappa the Rapper re-issue, the company made a gigantic version of its best controller in years. We're talking perfect-for-Wun-Weg-the-giant from Game of Thrones size.
Steam now has full support for the PS4 controller
Valve tried to radically redesign the gaming controller with its own Steam controller, but for a lot of players it never quite caught on. Fortunately, Steam is a very flexible OS and it's pretty easy to use your controller of choice. Like the PS4's Dualshock 4 controller, for example: Valve just announced today that the Steam client now fully supports the Dualshock 4. That means all the controller's capabilities can be mapped to various functions in Steam, including the trackpad and gyroscope.
Valve is testing DualShock 4 support in Steam's beta channel
If you never quite got the hang of Valve's weird touch-pad laden game controller, you're in luck: The company is, as promised, testing out Steam Configuration support for the DualShock 4. Steam beta client users can now customize every button on the PlayStation 4 gamepad using the same key-mapping interface Valve uses for its own Steam Controller. This makes the more traditional gamepad compatible with every non-VR title in the Steam library -- even those without native controller support.
PlayStation 4 has a pair of controllers made for pro gamers
The Xbox One has the Elite gamepad to satisfy the platform's pro gamers or people who just want a really nice gamepad. But Sony fans are stuck with a controller that's barely changed since the Playstation 4 launched in 2013. Rather than crafting one itself, Sony has announced it's working with the folks at Razer and Nacon to develop a pair of tournament-ready sticks.
Steam will soon natively support PlayStation 4 controllers
While it's been possible to link a DualShock 4 to a PC to play Steam games, the functionality has been provided by third-party apps, not the companies themselves. Luckily, that will soon change, after Valve's Jeff Bellinghausen confirmed to Gamasutra that the game company is working to include native support for other gamepads, starting with the PlayStation 4 controller.
PlayStation 4 Slim review: Wait for the PS4 Pro if you can
After selling over 40 million consoles, Sony is refreshing the PlayStation 4. That starts with the PlayStation 4 Slim, available now for $299, along with the PlayStation VR headset (out next month) and the higher-powered PS4 Pro, which comes out in November. Sony brought new PS4 accessories too
Sony didn't talk about it much during today's PlayStation Meeting event, but the reworked DualShock 4 (CUH-ZCT2) spotted in earlier leaks is real. The touchpad is a bit see through, allowing that line on the top to display whatever color the lightbar is showing -- all the better for games that take advantage of its color-changing abilities.
Sony will upgrade all PS4s with HDR
At today's announcement of two new PlayStation 4 consoles, Sony had news for existing owners too: a firmware update will make every PS4 (going back to the launch models) ready for HDR video. There weren't a lot of specifics on what exactly what your console will support, but we'll find out more info as it becomes available. Sony showed off some sweet gaming demos with the PS4 Pro showing what HDR can do, but we'll have to see how well older hardware supports the feature, or if it's only for video streams.
Video claims to show a redesigned PS4 slim controller
Earlier today Eurogamer took pictures and video of what appears to be a redesigned slim PlayStation 4, and now YouTube channel ZRZ is showing off what it says is the console's new controller. The only immediately noticeable tweak is up top, where there's either a second light bar or the DualShock 4's touchpad is allowing the light to shine through. That could be useful for syncing up with the PlayStation VR headset or just taking advantage of games that use the light indicator to give the player feedback. Lat year when we asked Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida about his favorite use for the feature, he called out Bloodborne's blood-red indicator.

But a gaming controller is a highly personal object, and your preferences may differ based on your hand size, gaming style, and operating system. If you already own a controller that you love, you probably don't need to buy a new one.
