Following in the footsteps of Twitter and Facebook, Google announced today the introduction of embedded posts for Google+. As you can see in the picture above, the drop down menu at the top of each G+ post now offers the option to embed; clicking the "Embed post" link summons a pop-up screen with an easy-to-use code. Text, photo and media posts are fully supported, and embedded content comes with the full range of Google+ functions, so you can +1, follow and comment with relative ease. Additionally, the company is integrating Google+ with its authorship program, starting with Wordpress and Typepad. So, the content you create for either platform will be linked to your G+ account if you sign in with Google, and your profile will be linked to in search results. Now that Facebook has let media outlets try their hand at embedded posts for a few weeks, it's opened up that door to the rest of us plebeians. Everyone, and yes we mean everyone, can now embed any public Facebook post, complete with images, links, text and hashtags, on to their own site. Your adoring readership may then "like" or hit follow on the source if they're so inclined. So hey, now anyone can serve as a guerrilla news source the next time a major news organization goes offline. To see what an embedded post looks like, we've included one from our Engadget account after the break.

Facebook has plenty of options for integrating with sites across the web. In fact, its share and like buttons were very much at the forefront of the social widget revolution. But, while its friends at Instagram have been enjoying embeddable posts since early this month, Facebook has had no comparable capabilities. That small, but obvious, advantage enjoyed by Twitter and Vine is finally disappearing, however. Today the popular social network and personal data gold mine unveiled Embedded Posts, which enable anyone to place interactive widgets on a page that contain images, links, update text and even clickable hashtags. Obviously, you can also like a post or follow the source account right from the embedded content. The feature is rolling out slowly, with CNN, Huffington Post, Bleacher Report, PEOPLE and Mashable the first to have it turned on for their accounts. Facebook promises that broader availability will be coming soon, but it my be awhile before personal accounts can start embedding public posts all over the web.
