As planned, Vodafone has launched the Samsung F490 -- you know, that full-screen touch piece for those of you that find themselves without need of the QWERTY keyboard afforded by the F700. The virtually button-free phone offers pretty much every feature a modern mobile warrior could be looking for -- save a smartphone operating system -- with a 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, stereo Bluetooth, microSD slot, and that Croix interface Samsung spent a good deal of time touting when it was introduced last year. As is frequently the case with European carriers, there are creative ways to make even this high-end device free depending on the plan you choose, so go ahead and commit yourself to one bajillion minutes and texts per month if you want to keep your wallet stowed when placing your order.[Via MobileBurn]

Say hello to what may well be Vodafone's newest, shiniest, and touch-screeniest new set, the Samsung F490. While we've not seen anything official from Vodafone on this, the pic is looking pretty convincing and the rumblings from near and far seem to agree. Pricing is set -- apparently -- from $free on the right contract. No word on when we can expect this to land on the shelves in the UK, but we'll drop you all a note as soon as we hear something substantial.[Via Phonemag]

If you've seen our shots of Samsung's Armani redo, the F480, you might have noticed it's running a new OS. The UI -- called TouchWiz -- is based off of the company's Croix interface (which apparently was rushed out to compete with the iPhone), and will be used on all of the upcoming finger-touch phones from the manufacturer. The cats over at Phone Scoop had a chance to go one-on-one with TouchWiz at Mobile World Congress, and they've put together a pretty informative video that shows off the UI doing its thing. The inclusion of a new widget system, expanded menu options, and overall speed bump make this OS a notable step up from Samsung's previous offering. Take a look at the video after the break to see the system getting all funky-fresh.[Thanks, Martijn]

Samsung's new P720 and F490 handsets already made themselves known at a recent press event in the Ukraine but, given that we unfortunately couldn't make the trek there ourselves, we didn't exactly get that great a look at 'em. Now thanks to the folks at Mobile-Notes, however, we've got some better pics of each of the handsets, along with a video that shows them off from every angle (check it out after the break). In case you missed the original announcement, the P720 and F490 pack 3 and 5-megapixel cameras respectively, along with dual SIM card slots on the former and a 432 x 240 touchscreen on the former. Both will also be available in the first half of next year, with the F490 trickling out sometime in the first quarter for $600, and the P720 following in Q2 for $500.[Via Unwired View]

  • Samsung's F490 / P720 handsets get outed

Although we came across Samsung's SGH-F490 during a recent FCC scavenger hunt, it, along with the previously announced P720 were recently spotted at an event in Ukraine. Unfortunately, most is lost in translation, but we can gather that the latter will rock dual SIM card slots, a 3-megapixel camera, a 320 x 240 resolution display and a price tag upwards of $500. As for the F490, you can expect a 5-megapixel camera, touchscreen display (presumably with tactile feedback support), 432 x 240 resolution panel and an estimated cost of $600. Beyond that, it seems that we'll have to wait before finding out more, but considering the Q2 / Q1 2008 release dates (respectively), we ought not be waiting long.[Via UnwiredView]
