Following yesterday's appearance on New Zealand's app store, Final Fantasy 6 has hopped the Pacific and is now available to classic RPG fans in the United States. Priced at $16, this most recent remake of the fan-favorite epic features modern graphics, a redesigned user interface, and the ability to save your game directly to the cloud. This version of Final Fantasy 6 boasts all of the additional content found in the 2006 Game Boy Advance remake, including four new Espers, two new areas, three new spells and a handy bestiary. Missing from this release are the full-motion video segments that bookend the 1999 PlayStation incarnation of Final Fantasy 6. There are two caveats to keep in mind before you hand your cash to publisher Square Enix: First, Final Fantasy 6 is compatible only with more recent iOS devices. If you own a model older than the iPhone 4S or iPad 2 you're out of luck. Further, Square Enix notes that "[c]ertain in-game conditions may cause the app to close unexpectedly on iPhone 4," and warns users to save their games frequently. [Image: Square Enix]

An iOS version of Square Enix's classic RPG Final Fantasy 6 launched in New Zealand's App Store today, a phenomenon that usually indicates an imminent North American release. The coming launch follows up on Final Fantasy 6's Android debut last month. Traditionally, games that hit the New Zealand App Store launch in North America the same day at 11PM ET. Square Enix confirmed that a Japanese iOS version will premiere on February 6. [Image: Square Enix]

If you purchased Square Enix's revamped Android port of the classic Super NES RPG Final Fantasy 6 after it hit Google Play last week, you may want to put your playthrough on hold while its developers sort out a major bug affecting player progress. Currently, the game crashes at a critical point, making the latter half of its storyline inaccessible. Players report that the glitch occurs during a climactic battle between Kefka and General Leo in Thamasa at the game's halfway point. A crash during a cutscene renders the game unbeatable, as story progress is stalled until required events unfold in Thamasa. Publisher Square Enix acknowledges the bug in the game's Google Play description, and promises that an upcoming fix will soon allow players to travel to the Floating Continent and beyond. A release date for the patch has not been announced.

Final Fantasy 6 is now available on Android. The mobile port was originally announced in October by Square Enix producer Takashi Tokita, who expected the game to arrive on both Android and iOS by the end of 2013. While it just missed the mark on its Android release, the game has not yet appeared on iOS. Final Fantasy 6 has been all over the place, as it first launched in 1994 on SNES, was later ported to PlayStation in 1999, Game Boy Advance in 2006 and hit PSN in 2011. The Android version of the game features recreated graphics and shares the "new magicites and events" that were brought forth on GBA. The classic RPG costs $15.99 on the Google Play store.

  • Report: Enhanced Final Fantasy 6 coming to iOS, Android

An updated version of Final Fantasy VI will make its mobile debut on iOS and Android this year, according to Square Enix producer Takashi Tokita. "The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and VI will be the same," Tokita tells Kotaku. For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle systems have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is." Tokita says the graphics will get a touch-up for the mobile release. Final Fantasy VI, which was originally launched in 1994 as Final Fantasy III in North America, takes place within a steampunk world that changes based on player choice. No pricing was mentioned for Final Fantasy VI on mobile but, if previous Square Enix games are any indication, it'll fetch a tidy sum of Gil.

  • Transmogging Final Fantasy 6: Terra, Locke, and Celes

Last week, Anne Stickney put together an amazing transmogrification for the Masters of the Universe, which was, admittedly, completely lost on me. I sort of missed out on the whole He-Man, Transformers, and Thundercats thing when I was a kid, probably because I was too busy playing video games. You see, many of my fondest childhood memories involve holding a console controller and trying to save the world in games like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and most of all, Final Fantasy VI -- which was technically Final Fantasy III back then, but that's beside the point. A few months back, I had a reader share a Celes Chere transmog in the comments of one my articles, and I've been wanting to do some Final Fantasy VI transmogs ever since. So for today's column, I've reproduced that reader's transmog, as well as two more for Terra Branford and Locke Cole. I would have liked to do my other two favorite characters, Shadow and Relm Arrowny, but WoW doesn't offer much in the way of fluffy harem pants and skin-tight ninja masks. Phooey! (Ten points if you get that reference.)

If you, like us, have felt jilted as other territories received a glut of Square Enix RPGs while the U.S. got table scraps, it's time to relieve yourself of your worries. PlayStation Blog has just announced the "Winter of RPGs" campaign, which will see the release of three much-desired PSOne Classics on the PSN: Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6. You'll be able to grab the character-rich Chrono Cross next Tuesday, November 8, the career-oriented Final Fantasy 5 on November 22, and the positively operatic Final Fantasy 6 on December 6. It's nice that they'll finally be on there -- though forcing them to compete for our free time with Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations seems, well, kind of mean.

We admit -- we might have gotten our dander up a little too quickly following Final Fantasy 6's release in Japan on PSN. We've just been hurt so many times before by Square Enix's Japanese PSOne Classics re-releases, which tend to take a while to come stateside, provided they ever come at all. However, we've got hope for the series sixth, Esper-filled installment: The ESRB recently rated Final Fantasy 6 for U.S. release on PSP and PS3. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean the game's going to come out next week, but it practically ensures that we'll be able to grab it from the PlayStation Store at some point in the future. While we wait for an official release date, why not join us in trying to remember exactly what kind of "Partial Nudity" is featured in Final Fantasy 6? Maybe that's a reference to Ultros? We guess he's totally naked throughout the entire game, but at the same time, he's an octopus. That kind of behavior is to be expected.

Just yesterday, yours truly (the incomparable Fox Van Allen) attended a live performance of Video Game Orchestra at Boston's Symphony Hall. The first half of the show dragged on, but once the VGO took over, the event was a home run. It wasn't without incident, though. In fact, dare I say ... it was a day that would change the WoW Insider staff forever.

  • The Daily Grind: Which Final Fantasy would you prefer in MMO form?

Square-Enix is known for making each of their Final Fantasy games in a brand new world or at least mostly new. While that's fine and dandy, let us suppose that the next MMO to come out of Square-Enix is in fact a recreation of one of their previous Final Fantasy games in MMO form. Which game would you like to see get the treatment? Midgar and it's band of rebel miscreants from Final Fantasy VII or perhaps Final Fantasy XII with its dashing sureshot Balthier? Or something else entirely? We're curious to know which of these many, many worlds and famous characters you'd most love to experience. It's a tough call for us, but we're somewhere in-between the two aforementioned games for both their worlds and characters. On one hand you've got an interesting game mechanic where classes could utilize materia, but on the other hand you've got a world where some kind of magical mist can drive its denizens to crazed outbursts of rage. Although we may have to go with the twelfth game due to its bunny girls. Then again, if they were to make the sixth game into an MMO we could probably create Moogle characters for a change.

  • Ambitious homebrew project attempts 3D FFVI remake

This one seems a bit too good to be true. nyxojaele of the Caves of Narshe forums has revealed that he's attempting to make a Final Fantasy VI 3D remake for the PSP. It originally started as an original project for the PC, but once he got his hands on the LTE game engine for PSP homebrew, there was no turning back. He's been very detailed about the process so far, showing screenshots, 3D models and more. A YouTube video he created supposedly shows him launching the game intro using the recently discovered TIFF exploit. Here's what he had to say:"My game is now being ported over to the PSP... The engine I'm now using is called LTE game engine. It's a PSP conversion of the wellknown "Irrlicht" engine for the PC. Since this is a (semi)fullblown GAME engine, instead of just a rendering engine, it'll also save me LOADS of time programming things, such as a sound driver, etc... So, in the last 2-ish weeks, I've been porting my game into the LTE engine, and at the same time, porting it over to the PSP. All is going well, it's just taking time. I have a lot of the internal framework done now, and have started on something you can actually SEE. This is where the fun comes: I've recorded a video of me booting up my PSP, and playing a teaser trailer of my game."Is this all real? Or is it one, incredibly elaborate hoax? I want to believe, and I'm throwing all my support for nyxojaele. Good luck.
