The Fire Emblem: Awakening 3DS bundle includes a 4GB SD card, on which the game is loaded, and will sell for $199.99, Nintendo of America announced today. That's a bit cheaper than buying a $170 (non-XL) 3DS and a $40 game separately, and the card is 2GB larger than the one included with the standard 3DS.Plus, that 3DS looks pretty cool. The blue 3DS bundle will be available on the same February 4 release date as the standalone game.

Fire Emblem: Awakening will be available in a lovely hardware bundle in the US and Canada, alongside its standard and eShop releases. The 3DS bundle features the same specially decorated blue 3DS released in Japan with the game. It's worth noting that this is an original 3DS, and not a 3DS XL.Being a Fire Emblem bundle, it wouldn't be complete without a Fire Emblem game, which is pre-loaded on the SD card. Nintendo has yet to announce price or specifics of availability, but the game is due to be released on February 4.

Despite the unique and interesting qualities of the 3DS' StreetPass and SpotPass functionality, I've rarely had reason to use it. So far, my favorite example of StreetPass functionality has been found in Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, where it's possible to swap Dark Notes and custom character cards. When Fire Emblem: Awakening launches next month, however, I expect the mileage I get from those features will increase. At a preview event on Wednesday, Nintendo demonstrated its upcoming 3DS strategy game, giving the media a glimpse at its secondary features. My time with it left me intrigued. It's rare to see StreetPass bonuses and DLC embedded so deeply in the single-player experience.Fire Emblem: Awakening's DLC plan, for the most part, has already been revealed. We've been aware that characters such as Marth, Roy, Ike, and other franchise luminaries will be available via an in-game variant of the eShop. What I hadn't realized until now, however, is that there are actual rewards for completing a map in the game.%Gallery-175932%

After a 3DS software showcase in which no new 3DS software was announced, Nintendo surprised us all by tweeting confirmation of a North American release for Fire Emblem: Awakening, the 3DS iteration of the popular strategy role-playing series. There's no release window, but Nintendo promised "more info to come" -- we'd expect a press release in the morning.Turns out Twitter was the real news source the whole time, and this whole E3 thing was a red herring.

This is a column by Kat Bailey dedicated to the analysis of the once beloved Japanese RPG sub-genre. Tune in every Wednesday for thoughts on white-haired villains, giant robots, Infinity+1 swords, and everything else the wonderful world of JRPGs has to offer. Next week, representatives from Nintendo and Sony will take the stage at E3 with the goal of fostering excitement for the Vita and 3DS. When it comes time for the sizzle reels and the assurances of publisher support, watch closely. For Japanese RPG developers, the time is now to make a splash.By any measure, Japanese-developed RPGs play an important role on mobile devices dedicated to gaming. It's not just that Monster Hunter dominated the PSP. Many of the best Japanese-developed RPGs of the past few years, The World Ends With You and Dragon Quest IX among them, have been handheld. With the 3DS exploding in Japan, there's little reason to believe that will change any time soon.
