While I've had many great first days in MMOs (and only a couple of nasty ones, surprisingly enough), the one that always sticks out as a seminal moment in my gaming life was my first day in World of Warcraft. I picked a Dwarf and so ended up logging into Coldridge Valley. It was hard to believe that after a lengthy development process that I was actually in the game. I remember spending almost 20 minutes just absorbing the look of everything and fiddling around with the UI. The remainder of my first day was spent enchanted with the ease of combat, the cool details like my Dwarf's breath puffing out in the wold, and the general atmosphere of the game. I think I knew right then that MMOs were going to be the way of my gaming future. Whether it was WoW for you or something else, what was the best first day you've ever had in an MMO? And keep in mind that it doesn't necessarily have to be the first day of a game's operation, just the first day you tried it. Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Activision announced today Call of Duty Black Ops 2 made $500 million on its first day at retail, eclipsing the franchise's previous record of $400 million as set by Modern Warfare 3 last year. Back then Modern Warfare 3 sold 6.5 million copies in the US and UK to make that figure, suggesting even greater numbers of copies sold this time around.Black Ops 2 shifted 1 million copies at GameStop on day one alone, while Amazon noted it became the site's most pre-ordered game ever. We can expect an even more eye-popping amount in around a week's time, when Activision will likely reveal the five-day sales figure. Last year Activision disclosed Modern Warfare 3 made $775 million in its first five days, and at this rate Black Ops 2 will have its eyes set on ten figures for the same mark.

  • Internet Explorer 9 hits 2.35 million downloads in first 24 hours, we're mildly impressed

Okay, so 2.35 million downloads in a single day is nothing to scoff at, but it's also not a monumental achievement in terms of browser downloads in the first 24. A post to Internet Explorer's official blog used the word "wow" to describe the IE9 numbers, but considering Firefox 3 got the Guinness world record for most software downloads in a day, with 8 million way back in 2008, we're reluctant to call this news wow-worthy. Given, Firefox 3 was available for both Mac and PC, but it still beat Windows' new browser three times over. Don't get us wrong, we like IE9, but we still think a little bit of modesty goes a long way.
