Facebook may have kept the videos you recorded but never published

Mark Zuckerberg's terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad 2018 keeps getting worse. As people have begun downloading their Facebook data, they've found something unsettling: videos they recorded, but never published on the site. Recently, a Select/All writer's sister was sifting through her data and found clips of her playing a scale on a flute, all without comments, and then one video with comments. The former were "takes" with mistakes that weren't published.

Welcome back to Ask TUAW, our weekly troubleshooting Q&A column. This week we have questions about changing file ownership and permissions, adding two external displays to a MacBook Pro, converting OGG and FLV files on an older Mac, transferring a Time Machine backup to a new disk, and more. As always, your suggestions and questions are welcome. Leave your questions for next week in the comments section at the end of this post. When asking a question, please include which machine you're using and what version of Mac OS X is installed on it (we'll assume you're running Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don't specify), or if it's an iPhone-related question, which iPhone version and OS version you have.

Last night, Perian was updated to version 1.1.2. If you need to extend the capabilities of QuickTime, the free Perian plugin allows QuickTime to play back all kinds of popular video formats (.AVI, .MKV, .FLV and more). It's a handy utility for anyone who watches a lot of video on their Mac. Here's a list of the bug fixes/improvements in 1.1.2: Fixed update checker never running - this version requires a manual install Enabled frame-dropping on AppleTV Fixed some frames being lost in AVCHD/.mp4 with newer versions of QuickTime Fixed another ffmpeg crash on G3s You can download the update to Perian from the project's website. You can also see the version history list on their support website. Thanks for the tip, Chris!

  • Tongfang PMC-V800 PMP plays Flash video

Like a thousand monkeys producing Shakespeare, eventually the endless tidal wave of generic PMPs from China had to result in something interesting, like Tsinghua Tongfang's PMC-V800. Not only does this 2.4-inch PMP sport FLV and SWF support, enabling it to play downloaded YouTube videos and Flash animations directly, it's also got mapping software, a karaoke mode, and USB On-The-Go -- all hiding behind a pretty slick "widgetized" interface. Sadly, additional video support is limited to AVI, MP4 and "HDTV," but all in all, it looks like a fairly decent player -- now if only we'd ever see it in the States.[Via PMP Today]

  • Adobe Flash Lite 3 adopts video support

Have Adobe Flash Lite installed on your mobile? If so, you'll be glad to know that a near-future upgrade will support video soon. Adobe's Flash Lite 3 is due out sometime before July and will natively have video support built in. The format, you ask? Well, naturally, Adobe's native video support in Flash Lite 3 will be its own Flash video format (FLV) that is used for videos all over the web these days (yeah, that goes for ads, too). Flash Lite 3 will be available on S60, BREW, and Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 (most likely WM6 as well). Don't fret, though, if you don't have one of these mobile OSes at your disposal -- Adobe Flash Lite 3 will also be available on embedded operating systems from many OEMs.

  • Convert YouTube videos for PSP really easily

The PSP is supposed to play Flash video one of these days ... but considering Sony's slow adoption of features we really want, we wouldn't hold our breath for it. Until then, there's a ridiculously easy solution for converting videos from sites like YouTube ... and it doesn't even involve downloading any software!1. Get the URL of the video you want.2. Copy URL into the "FLV Online Converter" at vixy.net3. Choose "MP4 for iPod/PSP"4. Wait for the conversion, download file, and then save it to your PSP under the "VIDEO" folder.Does it get any easier than this? Not really. I found it to work quite quickly, with some impressive results.[Via Zeropaid]

  • Perian - play most video formats in QuickTime for free

The veritable ocean of available video formats can often instigate a confusing and frustrating adventure in hunting for plugins and explaining to grandma why that DivX email forward she received plays the audio, but not the video. Fortunately, instead of bookmarking the plethora of codec download pages and backing up loads of installation disk images, a new plugin called Perian brands itself as a "swiss-army knife for QuickTime," as it aims to help solve all our video format woes. Perian supports an impressive list of codecs, including DivX, XviD, 3viX, FLV (y'know, those Flash files you can save but can't play because Adobe's Flash player doesn't seem to install an actual GUI front end?), AVI, and much more. Of course, you still need Flip4Mac if you have to play WMVs, but it looks like Perian can have you covered for most of the other formats you (and grandma) might encounter in your journey across the internets. As an upcoming bonus for Democracy Player users, Perian will be included in the next version.Perian is offered for free from Perian.org, though I can't track down any system requirements or whether it works on both Mac and PC.Thanks Rick
