Can Blossom's MIT-Enhanced Brew Win Over Skeptical Baristas? by Danielle Sacks, Fast Company The quest for the perfect cup o' joe has led to some rather amazing new brewers over the last few years, and the same goes for this MIT engineer's creation. The Blossom One Limited is a brewing unit that gives the barista complete control over all aspects of the process, except for the actual roasting of the beans. Water temperature, coffee dosage, grind, immersion time and more can be tweaked during the search for the best combination. Creator Jeremy Kuempel notes how coffee is more complex than wine on a genetic level, so he sought to make a unit that could showcase the unique properties of different varieties. Oh yeah, the ability to calculate perfection will cost your coffee shop $4,950.
Fox Sports 1 comes to 'all major distributors' Saturday, mobile app on hold
Saturday morning at 6AM Speed TV turns out the lights for the last time as Fox replaces it with a new 24-hour sports channel: Fox Sports 1 (FYI: Fuel TV will become Fox Sports 2, and FXX launches September 2nd as the new home of Always Sunny, The League and Totally Biased). Why? Because every network needs its own sports channel to fill out the package, like Disney / ABC including ESPN and Comcast / NBC Universal's NBC Sports. Negotiations this week wrapped up last-minute deals with holdouts DirecTV, Dish and Time Warner Cable, ensuring the channel will be available on all "major" distributors (about 90 million homes) across the country. What isn't quite ready for prime time is the accompanying Fox Sports Go app, its attempt at a TV Everywhere experience akin to WatchESPN and NBC Sports Live Extra. Rep Chris Bellitti tells Variety that "one of the most complex TV Everywhere apps ever created" just needs a little tweaking before it arrives on the web, iOS and Android. It will have live streaming video, plus scores, news and more for sports fans. Fox mobile apps add TV Everywhere streaming, 24-hour sports network due this fall
Fox has been quietly busy over the last few days, unveiling plans for a 24-hour sports network that may be the biggest challenger to ESPN's throne, and adding new features to its mobile apps. Fox Sports 1 is scheduled to launch Saturday August 17th, loaded with content including NASCAR, soccer (Champions League, Europa League and World Cup in 2018 and 2022), weekly UFC fights, college football, college basketball and in 2014, pro baseball. The bad news? According to the LA Times, for Fox Sports 1 to live Speed TV will die this fall, while Fuel TV is expected to be replaced by Fox Sports 2 while Fox Soccer is turned into an entertainment channel. One tweak it will bring is the "double box" commercial format that keeps the game on while ads play, which is expected to be used frequently on the new channel. It will have a suite of studio shows to compete with the sports leader as well, and even a Fox Sports Go "mobile experience" on iOS, Android and the web with live video streaming and news/stats for authenticated subscribers. Speaking of "authenticated" cable and satellite subscribers, the broadcaster also updated the free Fox Now second screen apps on iOS and Android, adding access to stream full episodes of its TV shows wherever you are -- as long as you have a membership with a participating provider. That list currently consists of Mediacom and Verizon FiOS, but it may grow in the future. The Fox Now apps still have other features, with synced content, Twitter streams and behind the scenes info, so New Girl and Bones fans may still have a reason to check them out.
