  • Fujitsu set to debut AMILO GraphicBooster external graphics card

We've heard plenty of promises of external graphics solutions for laptops in the past, and it looks like Fujitsu Siemens is now about to join the party as well, with it reportedly set to debut its AMILO GraphicBooster in the "next couple of weeks." That word apparently comes from a leaked presentation from the company which, unfortunately, doesn't include all the details we'd like, but does at least reveal a few tantalizing bits of information. As Notebook Review reports, the device is based on ATI XGP technology, which supposedly provides a 4.7X boost in graphics performance over a standard Fujitsu AMILO laptop (it's not clear if they're talking about integrated graphics or not), or a score of about 8,000 in 3DMark06 benchmarks. What's more, the device will also apparently let you connect up to three external displays to your laptop, with both DVI-D and HDMI ports provided. Of course, there's no word on pricing or availability, which could lead one to suspect that this is yet another device we'll still be hearing about a year from now -- if you're the cynical type, that is.[Thanks, Master_P]

  • AMD introduces Business Class desktops for the suits

What's a flagging microprocessor company to do after an absolutely tumultuous 2007 (and start to 2008)? Why, dish out its own desktop family, of course! At least that's what AMD is reckoning judging by the abrupt introduction of the Business Class desktop. Obviously the firm's very first computer brand, the series is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses, but it's noted that even the "biggest corporate clients" can find something to love. The company is planning to move the units via Acer, HP, Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens and Lenovo, and they'll be available with Athlon X2 dual-core, Phenom X3 triple-core and Phenom X4 quad-core CPUs. Oh, and if you're own outfit is totally over these "desktops," AMD is looking to unveil Business Class laptops during the second half of 2008.

In an upmarket move, Fujitsu-Siemens just loosed this, their AMILO Si 2636 laptop onto the cafe-posing elite. Besides sporting an interesting orb of a touchpad, it's configurable with a 2.2GHz T7500 Core 2 Duo processor, up to 4GB DDR2 memory, and 250GB of 5400rpm SATA disk. The new 13.3-inch, 1,280 x 800 (WXGA) laptop features Intel GMA X3100 graphics, HDMI-out, an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, 4-in-1 card reader, slot loading 8x dual-layer DVD burner, and battery capable of up to 5-hours. They even combine one of the 3x USB ports with eSATA for attaching a bit of high-performance external disk action. It weighs in at 2.3-kg (5-pounds) and 36.6 ~ 37.4-mm thick. We're still waiting for pricing and availability to be announced.%Gallery-9888%[Thanks, Joe]

  • Windows Home Server launches hardware blitz for holidays

Microsoft's Windows Home Server is saying balls to its dicey launch year and rallying the troops for a holiday hardware blitz. Its original hardware launch partner HP's on-sale-again-off-sale-again MediaSmart Home Server is officially back and on sale (huzzah!), and multiple hardware partners are (re)announcing their own boxes.Up to bat with new and "new" WHS hardware: Fujitsu-Siemens, Gateway, Iomega, LaCie, Leo Computers, LifeWare, Maxdata, Medion, and Tranquil. Sure, some have already announced, but those named today will either be introducing new WHS gear in short order, or at least intend to in the next quarter. Also getting official and on sale today: Velocity Micro's NetMagix (previously VMHS). Expect it with a Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM, eSATA, gigabit Ethernet, front / rear USB, and up to 4TB of storage (starting at $1000 for 1TB).P.S. -We're sure Microsoft would like us to remind you of the burgeoning WHS software add-on scene, with the dozens of apps now written for the platform. That's all well and good, but we'll worry about getting that hardware first, then take a look at that software.%Gallery-9767%

  • How-to upgrade Fujitsu Siemens N560 GPS to WindowsMobile 6

Alright, so it's a discontinued model and all, but is that necessarily a bad thing? A member of the dubiously named PPCWarez forum has figured out a way to upgrade this heavily featured PDA to WindowsMobile 6 capability. Fujitsu Siemens seems pretty unlikely to make the effort to upgrade, so these talented fans have stepped in and done it for them. Check out the package over at the link, making sure to reclick once you've accepted the terms and conditions of viewing the forum. Again, there's a slight tinge of dubiousness to the whole proceedings, so don't blame us if by some freak happening your precious PDA gets bricked.[Thanks, Geert]

  • Hands-on with Fujitsu Siemens' new laptops and LCD

IFA hasn't really been heavy on the computers from the bigger names, but Fujitsu Siemens thought it'd take a crack with its AMILO Xi 2428 and 2528 laptops. The two are certainly decent in the looks department, if nothing stellar, and shouldn't turn many heads for good or bad reasons in a crowded room of consumer laptops. We found the new SCALEOVIEW Q22W-1 display to be a bit distractingly shiny, but it does seem to match up nicely with Vista.%Gallery-6755%

Looks like IFA had a bit of a Windows Home Server bonanza this year, with four models being demoed from the likes of HP, MaxData, Fujitsu-Siemens, and Medion. Fujitsu-Siemens were showing off their 1TB Scaleo Home Server 1900 and 500GB Scaleo 1500 at the launch event, which features 4 internal drive bays, 30db operation, and 256MB of on-board flash for support in case of a "critical error." MaxData was also ready to enter the WHS fray with its o.Center, an orange and white affair with four drive bays and an expected ship date of late October. Finally, there was HP and Medion with their respective offerings -- the MD 90110 for Medion, and the MediaSmart for HP -- on show and in the flesh. Not long to wait now, you home media hosting addict you.[Thanks, Terry W.]

  • Fujitsu Siemens' new AMILO Xi laptops go consumer-friendly

    08.31.2007

Fujitsu Siemens loves to court the business set, but deep within that suited exterior is a heart for the consumer, as shown by this mildly interesting pair of AMILO Xi laptops. The AMILO Xi 2428 runs a 15.4-inch screen and weighs 6.6 pounds, while big brother Xi 2528 goes for 17-inches and a painful 8.8 pounds. Specs are fairly similar between the two: Core 2 Duo procs up to T7700, room for 2GB of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS graphics with 256MB of RAM, integrated webcam, and a full complement of ports like HDMI, S-Video, FireWire, ExpressCard, S/PDIF and a 5-in-1 card reader. The main difference between the pair is that the 2428 maxes out with a 250 gigger, while the 2528 can hold a pair of drives. The laptops will retail between £699 and £1449 ($1,404 and $2,909 US -- it's laptop prices like that which remind us why we live in the land of the free and the home of the brave), and will hit shelves sometime before the holidays.

We're not usually looking to Fujitsu Siemens for leadership in the LCD monitor space, but there's a lot to like about the new SCALEOVIEW Q22W-1 22-incher. The display has the aspirations of many a young 22-inch display, but also manages to integrate a 30fps webcam and dual microphones into the display housing, which are powered by a USB cable. Inputs include D-Sub, DVI, S-Video, Composite and HDMI, with both the HDMI and DVI ports supporting HDCP. The unit should be ready for the holidays in Europe at about £299 ($600 US).

Fujitsu-Siemens is supposed to debut the Scaleo, its first entry in the Windows Home Server market, later this week at IFA, but this press shot -- the first non-renders we've seen -- have surfaced a bit early, along with some more specs. The Scaleo will feature 4 internal drive bays, four USB 2 ports, two eSATA ports, "always-available" operation as opposed to being always-on, and silent operation. No word on that rumored two-drive RAID array or that 50W power consumption, but we'll know more when we get our hands on one at the conference.

Leaving so soon, are we? Turns out Fujitsu Siemens Computers is ditching the PDA / PNA market after 2007, which means that those bulky, albeit fashionable Loox handhelds will soon be available only in closeout bins and on your favorite auction site -- and just think, things were lookin' so bright just last year. According to a statement by FSC spokesperson Amy Flécher, the decision to cut the proverbial cord was simply "due to the usual examination of the portfolios," and the firm apparently noticed that "the traditional handheld segment (PDA) [had been shrinking] for years." Essentially, the company felt that smartphones would eventually swallow the "traditional handhelds" of the world, and considering that cranking out smartphones "is not its business at all," the choice seems logical.

    07.12.2007

Word on the street is that Fujitsu-Siemens is going to introduce its first entry into the not-so-crowded Windows Home Server market under the Scaleo brand at this year's IFA conference in late August. The Scaleo Home Server will feature headless operation under Vista Home Server, a two disk 500GB SATA RAID array, gigabit Ethernet, and Energy Star 4.0-compliant energy usage of just 50W. Price estimates are ranging from €500 ($690) to €700 ($965), and availability is hazily pegged at "by the end of the year" -- projections that match the awesome blurriness of this render.[Via We Got Served][Thanks, tip-star]

  • Fujitsu-Siemens launches ESPRIMO laptop line

Using a name that sounds vaguely like a conflation of two coffee drinks, Fujitsu-Siemens is setting its sights on the mid-range, business laptop market with a new trio of computers, dubbed the ESPRIMO Mobile Series. The rather reserved looking Core 2 Duo based models, a spinoff of its desktop line, are available in three different widescreen display configurations (12.1-inch, 14.5-inch, and 15.4-inch), and are based on the Santa Rosa chipset. All of the laptops come with Intel's GMA X3100 integrated graphics card, as well as integrated UMTS, Bluetooth, and WLAN. The three models can accommodate a second battery, giving the group up to ten hours of life between charges (according to Fujitsu), which would be a real treat for anyone who's getting tired of being tethered to an outlet. No word yet on pricing or street date, but we shall keep you posted.[Via notebookitalia]Read -- Fujitsu-Siemens ESPRIMO U9200Read -- Fujitsu-Siemens ESPRIMO M9400Read -- Fujitsu-Siemens ESPRIMO D9500

While we wouldn't say there are too many laptop manufacturers exactly slacking off on Santa Rosa introductions, Fujitsu-Siemens is making everyone else look bad, with this here S6410 laptop being about the tenth Santa Rosa-top we've seen from this manufacturer in a week. The 13.3-inch LifeBook S6410 naturally runs that new Core 2 Duo goodness, along with Intel's 965 chipset and GMA X3100 graphics. Fujitsu has also tossed in a UMTS modem, Smart Card reader and webcam, along with a Bluetooth option and Intel's Turbo Memory Robson tech in the near future. No word on price or availability, but where's the fun in that?

It doesn't look like the flood of Santa Rosa-based laptops is showing any signs of letting up, with Fujitsu Siemens now tossing its new Amilo Pi2515 into the mix alongside models from HP, Lenovo, Sony and others. At over six pounds, this one isn't exactly a lightweight, but you do get some decent specs with that added heft, including a 15.4-inch WXGA display, your choice of T7100 or T7300 Core 2 Duo processors, Intel GMA X3100 graphics, up to 2GB of RAM, a max 200GB hard drive, a dual-layer DVD burner, and a welcome ExpressCard slot to let you take advantage of the growing amount of gear out there. Unfortunately, as is the case with many of the other Santa Rosa-based laptops we've seen, there's still no word on what it'll cost or exactly when it'll be available.

We knew that Fujitsu-Siemens was hiding a little HSUPA laptop lovin' up their sleeves, now we know it's in the form of their new Lifebook P7230. The laptop isn't new, only the option to add UMTS/HSUPA data later this year. That, in addition to a 10.6-inch LED backlit screen and option to stuff a second battery into the modular bay makes this one hell of a laptop for those in need of 1.2-inches and 2.6-pounds of all day, ultra-portability. You know, if you can live with a Core Solo U1400 proc and the €2,999/$3,944 price tag when these hit Germany in the fall. Gee, we wonder who the network provider might be?[Thanks, Louise]

  • Fujitsu Siemens kits up with football club crested laptops

Custom laptop designs are a dime a dozen these days, with everything from fast car logos to glorious "Pink Feather" designs being stamped onto the back of LCDs in an attempt to draw the eyes of punters looking for a new lappie. The latest custom job on the market is Fujitsu Siemens' team of soccer themed laptops which don the colors and crests of four different UK clubs: Celtic, Aston Villa, Everton, and Tottenham Hotspur, to be precise. Under the soccer shirts, the laptops are Amilo 1536 models featuring 1280 x 800 15-inch displays powered by a 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics adapter. Dig a little deeper and you'll find a 1.83GHz Core Duo processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and a roomy 120GB 5400RPM SATA drive. Not quite striker material, we know, but the £1000 (plus three year warranty) price tag ain't too shabby considering the bundled paint job. Fujitsu Siemens is promising other clubs will join the line-up to celebrate the recent start of the Premiership season, although don't expect any teams with notable rivalries to be released at the same time. If you follow English football, you'll notice that the first four club themed laptops are a rather disparate lot: there's no Liverpool to go with Everton, no Rangers to go with Celtic, and so on. These guys obviously know how to manage their laptop teams without starting a football riot.[Via Reg Hardware]

    06.20.2006

We knew it was coming, and we knew exactly what they were going to stuff into that $5,000 "world's most desirable laptop" version, but it looks like Fujitsu has some scraps for the poorer desirers of the Q2010 among us. In fact, we're not even seeing the limited edition version listed at all on their product page, but there are three "low-priced" versions available if you're willing to sacrifice 3.5G wireless and a bit of street cred. Ranging from from $2,000 to $3,200, the laptops all feature 1.2GHz Core Solo ULV processors, 802.11a/b/g wireless, and the 3-cell 1.75-hour battery. For $3,200 you get an extra 7-hour battery, 1GB total of RAM, an 80GB HDD and Bluetooth 1.2, while the $2,400 mid-tier version gets you a supplemental 3.75 hour battery, Bluetooth 1.2, and a 40GB HDD. With a 30GB HDD, 512MB of RAM and no Bluetooth, the $2,000 version looks positively barebones. An incredibly sexy, slim, lightweight and desirable barebones.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

We're a little too excited to type straight right now, but you would be too if you'd just found out that the "world's most desirable laptop" will be available in a mere sixteen days. That's right, the $5,000 Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook Q2010 -- yes, the one with HSDPA and that snazzy piano black finish -- is a little over two weeks from seeing the light of day, according to a rather uninspired "teaser" site recently posted by the company. Besides the inclusion of wireless 3.5G networking and a fashionable exterior, however, it's still not clear what makes this machine so desirable; for our five grand, we're hoping to see something like AMD's "4 x 4" platform packing four GPUs and two dual-core processors into this hot little 2.2-pound ultraportable -- is that really asking too much?[Thanks, wolwol]
