Leica's compact, full-frame Q2 captures 47MP photos and 4K video
Leica made a few waves with its original Q camera in 2015, and not without merit: the Q was a compact full-frame camera that took advantage of the company's reputation for high-quality lenses. You'll be glad to hear, then, that Leica is back with a full-fledged sequel. The just-unveiled Q2 borrows the same basic formula, including the non-removable 28mm f/1.7 prime lens, but gives you a much higher-resolution 47.3-megapixel sensor and, at last, 4K video capture. It's also billed as the only camera in its class (admittedly a rather small class) with dust and water resistance.
Sony's 135mm f/1.8 G Master full-frame lens is all about bokeh
Last year at Photokina 2018, Sony said it had big plans to keep growing its E-mount lens portfolio. The company revealed back then it was working on 12 new lenses for its Alpha mirrorless cameras, which would increase the number of native glass for those shooters from 48 to 60. And Sony is staying true to its word: It has announced the FE 135mm f/1.8 GM lens, the latest addition to its G Master lineup for full-frame mirrorless cameras. This telephoto prime is intended to be a beast for shooting portraits, offering a fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, as well as shallow depth of field for intense bokeh effect. Sony says that the FE 135mm f/1.8 GM's control and ergonomics are designed for both still photography and movie shooting, and it promises "superior performance plus mobility and reliability" compared to any other 135mm full-frame lens on the market. If you're interested, Sony's FE 135mm f/1.8 GM is set to arrive in April for $1,900. Canon’s next full-frame mirrorless camera is the EOS RP
Well, it looks like the recent rumors were spot on: Canon is getting ready to launch a compact version of its EOS R camera. And here it is. Meet the EOS RP, a full-frame mirrorless shooter that costs a reasonable $1,299 (body-only). For those of you keeping track at home, that's $1,000 less than the EOS R, which just arrived in October of 2018.
Canon's leaked full-frame mirrorless is a compact version of the EOS R
Canon is preparing to reveal its second full-frame mirrorless camera after the EOS R, but before it could officially pull back the curtain on it, photos of the EOS RP have leaked. Nokishita Camera also posted some of the supposed specs, indicating the RP will have a 26.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and offer five-frames-per-second continuous shooting.
Nikon Z6 review: The best full-frame mirrorless camera for video
When Nikon launched its two all-new full-frame mirrorless cameras, it was laying down a challenge to Sony. The landscape- and portrait-oriented 45.7-megapixel Z7 strongly resembles Sony's superb, 42.4-megapixel A7R III. Meanwhile, the model we're looking at today, the 24.5-megapixel Z6, looks a heckuva lot like the world-beating 24.2-megapixel Sony A7 III. Both Z-Mount cameras cost nearly the same as their Sony counterparts and pack similar features, like in-body stabilization and full-sensor 4K video.
Nikon's Z6 full-frame mirrorless camera launches November 16th
If you've been intrigued by Nikon's Z-series full-frame mirrorless cameras but thought the $3,400 starting price of the Z7 was too much? You're in luck. After months of waiting, Nikon has announced that the (relatively) more affordable Z6 will be available on November 16th. You can buy it for $2,000 in body-only form, or $2,600 paired with a 24-70mm f/4 S lens that can cover typical shooting situations.
Canon EOS R review: Brilliant mount, but flawed 4K video
Canon has a lot riding on its first-ever full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R. Not only is it an important camera on its own, but it's the ambassador for Canon's all-new RF mount system. It isn't just competing against Sony's heavily entrenched and popular A7 series, like it was two months ago. Now, archrival Nikon has its own full-frame mirrorless cameras, the Z6 and Z7, also with an all-new system called Z-Mount. When I first saw the EOS R in Maui, I fell in love with the big mount and the potential it represented for sharper, faster and more compact lenses. But living with a camera is different from having a crush on one. After using it for nearly two months, I feel it has a lot going for it, like the world-beating Dual Pixel autofocus system, great color science, excellent lenses and a solid build. Given the price, however, it has incredibly steep competition from Nikon, Fujifilm and especially Sony. But if my issues with video and handling are anything to go by, you might want to think again before laying down $2,300 for the EOS R.
Leica's Q-P is a pricey full-frame camera with subtle refinements
Leica is keeping up its habit of releasing subtly refined P variants of its cameras, this time focusing on its full-frame street camera, the Q. The newly unveiled Q-P mostly focuses on stealth, with the signature red Leica dot going away in favor of textured matte black everywhere and a logo engraving on the top. It won't call quite so much attention to itself while you're concentrating on your street photography, in other words. There are some functional changes to the design as well. The shutter and power/drive controls have been redesigned to more closely resemble what you'd get in the M10 or CL, with more reassuring clicks that let you operate more by feel.
Sony's full-frame mirrorless cameras finally have some competition
Since the launch of the A7 and A7R in 2013, Sony has had virtually no competition in the full-frame mirrorless space. Major players like Canon, Nikon and Panasonic were keeping their focus on other camera formats, such as APS-C, Micro Four Thirds, point-and-shoots and full-frame DSLRs. But that's all starting to change. At Photokina 2018, Panasonic introduced its first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the Lumix S1R and S1, which feature 47- and 24-megapixel sensors, respectively. While these are still in development and likely won't launch until next year, the fact that Panasonic has finally given in and is making a full-frame mirrorless shows Sony is about to start facing some serious competition. It validates all the efforts the company's been making in that market for the past few years, leading up to the gold standard that's its latest model, the A7 III.
The new mirrorless cameras you can buy soon
Photokina 2018 has been great for camera fans, particularly those who love mirrorless shooters. At the event in Cologne, Germany, we saw a few new models from big players like Fujifilm and Panasonic -- some medium format, others full frame. Whatever system you prefer, there's no doubt you won't have any shortage of options if you're looking to buy a mirrorless camera in the near future. There already plenty of great ones in stores right now, such as Sony's A7 III, but Photokina brought us more mirrorless cameras to look forward to. Let's take a look at the best of them.
A closer look at Fujifilm's GFX 50R and GFX 100 medium format cameras
We knew coming into Photokina 2018 that Fujifilm had some big plans for the event, and the company did not disappoint with its announcements. Aside from introducing the Instax Square SQ20, Fujifilm's had two major reveals at the show: the GFX 50R and GFX 100. These are medium format mirrorless cameras, powered by system Fujifilm likes to call Super Full Frame, that come with large sensors and a hefty price tag. The GFX 50R, for starters, is essentially a successor to the GFX 50S from 2017, which was $6,500 when it launched. Inside, it's nearly identical to the 50S, sporting a 51.4-megapixel sensor, 100-12,800 ISO range a 400-shot battery capacity and a weather-sealed body.
Everything you need to know about Canon’s EOS R mirrorless camera
Canon and Nikon protected their DSLR turf as long as possible, but Sony has been killing them lately with its mirrorless range. Nikon finally jumped into the fray by launching the Z6 and Z7 models, and today, Canon unveiled the $2,299 EOS R, a 30.3-megapixel video-centric full-frame mirrorless camera. It also introduced a new lens mount, Canon RF, along with four lenses, including three interesting high-end "L" models. The EOS R slots between Sony's A7 III and A7R III and the Nikon Z6 and Z7, resolution-wise. It's a near match to Canon's own EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR, with similar resolution, dual-pixel autofocus, shooting speeds and video specifications.
Canon's full-frame mirrorless camera leaks in vivid detail
You don't have to wonder how Canon will respond to Nikon's Z-series mirrorless cameras (and by extension Sony) -- many of the details now appear to be out in the open. Nokishita and Canon Rumors have posted leaked details of the EOS R, a 30.3-megapixel full-frame cam that would primarily compete with the Nikon Z6 and Sony's A7 III. The design would thrive on low-light photography with a wide ISO 100 to 40,000 normal sensitivity (up to ISO 102,400) and the company's familiar dual-pixel autofocusing. Those aren't exceptional specs given the increasingly competitive full-frame mirrorless space, but there would be a few twists that might give it an edge over its rivals.

After what seemed like an endless amount of rumors and teases, Nikon has finally debuted its Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras. While both models have the potential to rival some of Sony's best mirrorless shooters, like the A7 III, let's talk about the flagship Z7 since that's actually scheduled to launch soon. It's also the only one Nikon is showing off at its event here in New York City. For starters, the Z7 sports a ridiculous 45.7-megapixel full-frame sensor, with a new body-lens system dubbed Z-mount. The new camera is powered by Nikon's Expeed 6 image processor and boasts a 493-point autofocus system that, according to the company, offers about a 90 percent wide coverage area.

It's over, at last: Nikon's worst kept secret is finally seeing the light of day in an official capacity. Today, the company revealed its long-rumored, highly anticipated mirrorless cameras, the Z6 and Z7. But here, we're going to focus on the flagship model, the Z7. This new shooter features a full-frame 45.7-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor with an Expeed 6 image processor, an ISO range of 64-25,000, a 493-point autofocus system, 9fps continuous shooting and 4K UHD video. That's basically everything you'd want out of a top-of-the-line camera in general, not just the mirrorless kind.
Nikon's Z6 outmuscles the Sony A7 III in shooting speed and video
After many leaks and teases, Nikon has unveiled the Z6, a full-frame mirrorless camera that might tempt many photographers away from Sony's A7 III. It has very similar specs to that model, including a 24.5-megapixel full-frame sensor with 100-51,200 native ISO, 12 fps continuous shooting, 273 autofocus points and 4K video. Nikon's Z6 has a much bigger lens mount, however, and a chunkier handle that's easier to grab, especially when there's a humongous lens attached. It's a clear call-out to some of the pros who aren't crazy about the ergonomics of Sony's A7-series cameras.
Nikon may unveil its full-frame mirrorless cameras on August 23rd
The seemingly endless dribble of teases for Nikon's full-frame mirrorless cameras might soon come to an end. Nikon Rumors (historically accurate with leaks) claims that the camera maker will unveil the two models on August 23rd. The 24-megapixel camera, reportedly named the Z6, would focus on high-speed and low-light photography. The 45-megapixel Z7, meanwhile, would unsurprisingly emphasize detail. Nikon is still rumored to deliver the two cameras with just three lens options: a 24-70mm f/4 standard zoom, a 50mm f/1.8 prime and wider-angle f/1.8 lens between 24mm and 35mm. However, there might be a post-unveiling surprise.
Nikon teases a substantial lens mount and grip for its new camera
Nikon is not exactly known for breathless marketing, but it's going all out for its upcoming mirrorless full-frame camera. The company has unveiled yet another video teaser called "Mount" that gives us a good look at the shape of the camera, especially the grip and lens mount.The latter has four interlocking tabs, rather than three like its DSLR models, and is pretty large for the size of the body. The grip also looks more stout than the one on Sony's A7 III.
Nikon teases its first full-frame mirrorless cameras
If you thought Nikon was going to introduce its first full-frame mirrorless cameras without some fanfare, you had another thing coming. Nikon has posted a teaser video and "In Pursuit of Light" campaign website that might just hint at what its first pro-oriented mirrorless cams will look like. Provided the brief view is representative, it backs up a number of rumors, including the large mounting format (which could support super-bright f/0.95 lenses), an electronic viewfinder and a more ergonomic design. The lineup could be public as soon as July 23rd, so you may see much more in the near future.
Sony A7 III review: A peerless full-frame mirrorless camera
With its latest model, the 24.2-megapixel A7 III, Sony has created a near-perfect all-around camera. It has the best mirrorless autofocus system on the market, sharp, full-frame 4K video, high shooting speeds worthy of a sports camera, and excellent image quality. It's not perfect, but after trying it for a week, I can say it's easily the best $2,000 camera you can buy, and it even tops a few more expensive cameras.
