Ever the one to find a somewhat unique selling point for its GPS units, NDrive has now announced a pair of new devices that employ what the company claims to be the "world's first photo mapping system." That slightly dubious claim aside, the new G280 and G800 units certainly look like they'll get the job done and then some, with them each boasting visual and audible speed camera alerts, a pedestrian mode for out-of-vehicle use, and of course the usual range of PMP features with an SD card slot provided for expansion. The G800 also takes things a couple of steps further with built-in Bluetooth and an FM transmitter to pump audio through your vehicle's speakers. No word on a release 'round these parts, but those in the UK will apparently be able to grab 'em later this month for £199 and £315 ($400 and $630) for the G280 and G800, respectively.

Nokia really ought to keep on eye in the rear view mirror these days, as its Korean competitor is slowly creeping up from the back with entries like its latest media-oriented smartphone, the G810 -- a successor to the G800. The phone breaks from Samsung's fascination with Windows Mobile and goes the Symbian route, also touting HSDPA data, a 2.6-inch QVGA display, a 5-megapixel camera, GPS functions, WiFi, 150MB of memory (plus a microSD slot), and Bluetooth 2.0. The new handset is expected to be introduced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, and will likely retail for around €580. • More on the Portege G920 and Toshiba's 2008 roadmap

Evidence of Toshiba's new Portege G920 QWERTY doesn't get any better than an FCC filing. Still if you need more, you're looking at the G920 held aloft in the wilds of some Tosh briefing. That slide on the left looks to be tattling on Toshiba's 2008 roadmap too -- at least Toshiba's lineup for launch in Russia where this presentation was apparently delivered. From it, we see the G920 scheduled for an early Q1 release followed by a G930 in early Q4. Also spotted is the G800 with stylus input, G710 and G720 with GPS, and G450 classed as a "USB modem phone." Expect to hear more on the Q1 column of devices at CES in a few weeks.

It's a good time to be taking pictures with your phone. No, we don't literally mean this second -- we mean that the selection of devices in the market today that are capable of producing decent shots is greater and more diverse than ever before. 3.2 and 5 megapixel autofocus sensors (and soon, 8) combined with uncharacteristically potent flashes mean that leaving the point-and-shoot at home is starting to be a realistic option. How does Samsung's shiny G800 slider with optical zoom -- all 5 megapixels of it -- stack up against the fray? Read on to get a taste.%Gallery-11526%

We can't say we would've chosen Samsung's SGH-G800 to star at the Vienna State Opera House, but we heard the iPhone and N95 both refused to leave their respective dressing rooms. The show must go on, right?Josh: "2 b or not 2 b, tht is the qstn"Ryan: "An elaborate getup for a videocall, I know. But I assure you, dear madam, that I'm wearing no pants."Evan: "Can ye hear me now?"Don: "A bar, a bar, my kingdom for a bar!"Thomas: "Figaro, figaro... hello, mom?"Darren: Samsung: "Idiot, we meant the Opera b r o w s e r"Paul: "Not enough sparkle? Are you sure?"Steve: "Line?"Nilay: "Alas, poor Yorick, for he was not in my 5"Ross: "This is Puccini. You know nothing of my work."

  • Samsung's 5 megapixel G800 gets launched, available next month

Is it a phone, or is it a camera? Until recently, cameraphones were unquestionably still just phones with chintzy cams tacked on, but it looks like we're finally getting to the point where the lines are truly blurred. Samsung's new G800 slider is now official, packing a 5 megapixel autofocus camera in a rather attractive metallic form; that in itself isn't terribly notable, considering we already have a handful of 5 megapixel handsets on the market. What is notable, though, is the added bonus of a xenon flash and 3x optical (yes, optical) zoom. Heck, from the back, you can barely tell it's a phone at all. Add in the usual goodies like Bluetooth, HSDPA, and a generously sized QVGA display, and Samsung has a winner on its hands -- or at least it would have a winner if only it'd launch stateside. Our far luckier European brethren, meanwhile, can lay their hands on this sucker starting in November for a to-be-determined price.[Via Unwired View]

It wasn't that long ago when the Samsung G800 came into our sights and with features like a 5 megapixel camera, 2.4 inch QVGA display, Bluetooth, Xenon flash, expandable memory via microSDHC, and Triband GSM with HSDPA -- who could forget such a device? Well lucky for us, some colleagues had the chance to play with the device pre-production. Be sure to check out the preview and additional pics in the read link.[Thanks, David]

  • Samsung's SGH-G800: another 5 megapixel slider?

For better or worse, it seems 5 megapixel sensors may be on the cusp of supplanting smaller units on high-end featurephones, and naturally, Samsung's on the forefront of the trend. Hot on the heels of the G600, the rumored G800 slider is said to feature a tri-band GSM radio with HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.0, microSD expansion, a lovely 2.4 inch QVGA OLED display, xenon flash, and a sliding lens cover (a la K800) to protect that mighty cam. We've no idea when or where this thing might launch, but without that critical fourth band, the US seems like a long shot.[Via phoneArena]
