Players who hop on the Azure Striker Gunvolt bandwagon when it launches in the 3DS eShop next week will receive a free bonus minigame that features a playable character from fellow Keiji Inafune project Mighty No. 9. Mighty Gunvolt is a five-level, NES-styled platformer starring Azure Striker's Gunvolt, Mighty No. 9 main character Beck, and Ekoro, a supporting character from developer Inti Creates' Japan-only rail shooter Gal*Gun. Azure Striker Gunvolt launches digitally in North America on August 29.

Do you have the following three items: 1) a Japanese PSN account, 2) a PlayStation Move, and 3) a complete lack of shame (or roommates)? If you meet all three conditions, a special "Valentines Day Demo" of the pheromone shooter Gal Gun awaits you on February 14. Take advantage of the PS3's region free gameplay and easy downloading of import demos! You know, if that's your thing.First, we suggest seeing if you can get all the way through the new trailer for the self-identified "baka-ge" ("stupid game") without dying of embarrassment.

If you want to play Gal Gun, Inti Creates' light gun game about shooting pheromones at crazed high school girls -- and we're not judging -- it's about to get easier to do so. This winter, according to a report from Famitsu, publisher Alchemist will release a PS3 port of the formerly Xbox 360 exclusive game. PS3 games are region free, so it's no problem to play it on your system! In addition to that perk, the PS3 release will have improved visuals, a new character, a new gameplay mode, and -- most importantly -- PlayStation Move support. The downside there is that you'll be waving a glowing ball around, making it even easier for others to notice you playing Gal Gun.

If you've got Japanese PSN or Xbox Live accounts set up, they're going to come in handy in the next couple of weeks, as demos for Catherine and ... Gal Gun will be available for download. January 27 will see the arrival of the Catherine demo on both PSN and XBLA, though it won't be available to Silver members until February 3. While Catherine is odd-looking but genuinely, defensibly interesting, you'll just have to pretend you accidentally downloaded the Gal Gun demo from Xbox Live on January 21. "I just picked randomly! I can't read Japanese!" It's "ぎゃる☆がん", by the way, in case you have trouble finding it.

  • Gal Gun publisher fighting with Microsoft over panties

According to Andriasang, the countdown to Gal Gun's release has stopped in response to trouble from Microsoft. Currently, the official Gal Gun site, which hosts the countdown, is down entirely. It seems the company finally noticed what, exactly, it was showing off at its TGS booth. Gal Gun's release date was originally set for January 27. "Negotiations have started for the great moral cause (panties)," publisher Alchemist said on the official site, suggesting that Microsoft is objecting to content in the thoroughly objectionable shooter. This should come as little surprise to Alchemist, since the game itself includes a built-in mechanism to hide its contents from others.

  • Gal Gun doesn't want you being seen playing Gal Gun

Gal Gun is embarrassing. Ludwig learned this firsthand while playing the Xbox 360 shooting game at Tokyo Game Show. It's so embarrassing that even developer Inti Creates and publisher Alchemist had to acknowledge the fact that players wouldn't want to be seen playing it. The developer has implemented a panic button that instantly puts a fake 8-bit game on the screen, with authentic animations and sounds. This is referred to as a "Mama kita gamen," or "Mom arrived screen," which, oddly, is exactly the nightmare scenario Ludwig envisioned in the preview. Either he tapped into a universal fear of having one's mother see Gal Gun, or Ludwig's coverage inspired this option. In other news, Gal Gun will be released in Japan on January 27. You can go ahead and forget about importing it as a gag gift or an odd conversation piece, because it's going to cost ¥7,140 ($87).

I'm so glad my mom didn't attend the Tokyo Game Show with me this year. Being forced to cover the notoriously crowded and humid event in a sweater would be a miserable experience ("You'll catch a cold!"), but the perspiration would go into overdrive if I had to explain a game like Gal Gun: "Ludwig, are you playing a kids game?" (This is always the first question when a game's graphics don't quite portray reality.) "No, Mom, it's cel-shaded. It's an anime-styled, on-rails shoot-her with a first-person perspective. It's called Gal Gun." "Is that a school?" "Uh huh, it seems like a Japanese high school. Judging by the sheer amount of girls fawning over me, it's not co-ed." "Or anything like your school days."

Nothing quite says "awkward Japanese video game stereotypes" like the trailer for the just revealed Gal Gun. Uncomfortable camera shots of Japanese high school girls, bizarre moan-like noises coming from said high school girls, and, of course, tentacles abound in the game's debut trailer (found after the break). The game itself is an on-rails shooter in which you control the hand of "the most popular guy in school," who's trying to find his dream girl by shooting every lady he sees with a heart-firing pistol. Gal Gun is being developed by Inti Creates -- the folks behind Mega Man 9 and 10 -- so don't expect winning over the ladies to be easy. As Eurogamer points out, no release date has been given for the game, and there's been no indication as to the possibility of a US release. Our money's on "not likely."
