Best of 2008: The most delicious DS homebrew
Time to face some harsh facts, people: this time next year, none of us will have two pennies to rub together, and nobody will care anyway, because we'll all be fighting to the bloody death over scrap metal, rat carcasses, and clean drinking water. The good news? You can slow your inevitable descent into abject poverty by no longer paying for your DS games, and instead download totally free homebrew. Hurray! Not that you shouldn't be selective in what you download -- after all, for every StillAliveDS or Pocket Physics, the homebrew community churns out plenty of garbage. With this in mind, we decided to compile a list of the best homebrew we personally encountered this year. Have any recommendations that we missed? Tell us in the comments! M:O releases Sexy Blackjack Trainer, GTC update
Never one to put out a boring release, programmer Multiple: Option joined this summer's Neoflash Coding Competition with a title most pervs won't be able to pass up -- Sexy Blackjack Trainer.We've featured NSFW card games for the DS before, but this one has two special features that really show the developer's attention to detail: Controls designed specifically for one-handed play Rumble pak support As you've probably surmised, Sexy Blackjack Trainer teaches you basic strategies and card-counting techniques for 21, rewarding your wins with NSFW pictures.The game comes in two flavors, each featuring photos from a different adult movie star -- Sunny Leone, who appeared in Star 69: Strap Ons, and Sora Aoi, who you might remember from her 2005 film, Sora Is Your Do-Exactly-As-Told Toy.Hedging his bets for the coding contest, Multiple: Option also entered a new version of his unique trivia game, Game Trivia Catechism. The update adds two new modes, new chiptune tracks, and, presumably, more questions. Game Trivia Catechism: Casual, homebrew gaming for the hardcore gamer
Programmer Multiple: Option continues to release some of the most interesting homebrew titles out there, this time with Game Trivia Catechism. Billed as a casual game for hardcore gamers, this original title takes the bland and basic multiple-choice trivia format, spicing it up with an intriguing storyline, a gaming theme, and a chiptune soundtrack provided by artists like 8-Bit Terror and PDF format. Instead of solving math equations or recalling historical facts, players will have to put their useless gaming knowledge to work and answer questions like "Which of these games was NOT designed by Yu Suzuki?" or "Which Mario game did Super Mario Advance remake?"It's a short game -- you can probably finish it within 15 minutes -- but Multiple: Option deserves praise for creating an entertaining title that doesn't rely on the assets or designs of other developers. If you have the equipment to play homebrew games, we definitely suggest you try this one out. Let us know if you're able to score any higher than a "C" without cheating and using the internet!
