Former 1UP employees and crew of The Brodeo (commonly known as GFW Radio) are planning a live reunion show at the 2009 Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Washington. However, before new Agent 00 theories and Internet Hero shout-outs can be addressed, the team needs your help. Armchair Empire is taking donations to help rent conference space for the September event. According to Armchair, the entire original cast (sans Darren Gladstone) has expressed interest in a live show -- with Rebel FM's Anthony Gallegos playing "bench warmer." Currently, donations stand at less than half the $2,250 room rental cost. All excess donations are said to be given to Penny Arcade's charity, Child's Play. Joystiq was told that if the goal was not met, donations would either be returned or given to charity. [Thanks, Flanked. Image from Terrence S.]

  • 1UP layoffs and the ripples therein

When half of the staff leave/are laid off from a gaming site as notable as 1UP, it affects essentially everyone within the industry -- as does the closure of EGM, one of the very best gaming magazines around. Their excellent coverage of games like Final Fantasy XI, Warhammer Online and World of Warcraft (to name just a few) have always been the sort of things we here at Massively strive for in our own features. Whether it was podcasts like Legendary Thread or the infamous live reading of a certain Age of Conan incident on GFW Radio, the group working at 1UP were always in it to entertain, inform and hopefully make everyone think a little bit about their favorite pasttime.Understandably, the massive layoffs have created a sort of hate brush fire that's been roaring across the internet mostly via message boards fueled by a mix of ex-1UP Twitters and hearsay. While it pains us as fans to see so many talented and hard-working writers let go, there's some truth to the saying, "You can't win 'em all" in this situation. Our own searing anger was doused a little upon reading a lucid post detailing the why behind the whole debacle.

WoW as an e-sport currently is actually pretty awful. Two, for example, are the Electronic Sports League (ESL) who have a world wide tournament, the finals being in March 2009, and Major League Gaming, a console-centric league who expanded to PC earlier this year with WoW. There are not a lot of amateur tournaments out there for WoW.

15 Minutes of Fame is our look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes – from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you'd like to hear more about. First off, let's establish this for the record: yes, there are people out there who play World of Warcraft professionally. There are pro teams, well known player personalities and an entire tournament scene. And behind it all, there are podcasters – "e-casters" – reporting on every twist and turn.Meet JP McDaniel, a 22-year-old college journalism major and podcaster for ArenaCast. JP has combined the game he loves with school and work in what he hopes will be a springboard to a print journalism career in gaming. He's managed to roll his main up to 80 in the midst of podcasting, news updates, tournament travel and his studies. We talked with JP about his road into e-casting and his perspectives on where e-sports -- and competitive WoW, in particular -- are heading.

It's time for another Podcast Rodeo, but we'd be kidding ourselves if we tried to act like we could think about any podcast right now other than GFW Radio or, to us fans, the Brodeo. With Jeff Green moving on up to the EAst side, our favorite podcast will be monumentally different and we'll be looking forward to Wednesdays (or sometimes Thursdays) just a little bit less.Yes, GFW Radio will soldier on in his absence and will probably continue to be a must-listen. But this week, we're remembering the way we were with some of the Rodeo's favorite GFW episodes. Give them a listen and feel free to share your favorites in the comments. The misty eyed action starts right after the jump.
