  • The Daily Grind: What fantasy trope should be retired from MMOs?

Tropes: MMOs are chock-full of them. From pirates running rampant in every fantasy setting to the "save the world from cranky dragons" narrative, it seems like developers go to the same well for inspiration more often than not. Sometimes that's OK, because we do like the familiar and to see if these game creators can do something unique with them. But sometimes enough is enough. So what fantasy trope should be retired from MMOs? My vote is and always has been for giant spiders. It's not that I'm creeped out by them or anything, it's just that I'm so very, very tired of seeing them in every game. Not only are they physically impossible, but it seems like a cheap method to try to induce a bit of squirmy apprehension instead of actually working for it. Yes, your game has big spiders. Congrats. You're as special as white bread. What say you? What trope would you like to see banished, never to return? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

  • This RIFT 1.5 update trailer is approved for all audiences

RIFT's 1.5 update is barreling down the road at us, and woe to the unprepared who will not leap but be squashed beneath its weight. Also, we think that a giant monkey is throwing it whilst guarding a captured princess. In any event, RIFT's fifth major content update looks to be a game-changer in several ways, adding alternative advancement (planar attunement), master-level dungeons, and veteran rewards to the faithful. To celebrate this week's release of Ashes of History, Trion Worlds has put together an impressive trailer full of angels, demons, and the words "Trion Worlds presents" for our viewing pleasure. One interesting detail to note is the apparent addition of a giant spider mount, which will undoubtedly play favorably in the arachnophobic market. You can view the two-minute trailer after the jump! [Thanks to Ren54 for the tip!]

  • On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me: Vindictus, zebra stockings and giant spiders

It's not often that we in the Massively offices are just plain stumped, but today Nexon receives that rare badge of distinction. To usher in Vindictus' holiday event, Nexon has put together a 48-second video of pure insanity. It runs the gamut of snowball fights, mostly naked people wearing zebra underwear, giant spiders, pigs and one exhausted-looking Santa Claus. The festivities begin in Vindictus on Wednesday, December 15th and revolve around the battle with Laghodessa, a giant arachnid with a penchant for taking all the presents and drinking all of the egg nog. Nexon has asked the players to speculate about why their characters may have a vendetta against the plus-sized spider and for the players to send in their stories. Once players have defeated Laghodessa, they'll have the opportunity to craft a unique spider cloth armor set. Nexon's also throwing out a number of goodies, including free XP weekends, free boat trips and free potions for the taking. Head on over to Vindictus to read up on the event, or hit the jump and witness the holidays seen through the lens of the insane.

What do wolves, toads, arachnids, and swordplay have in common? If you said a new program on Animal Planet produced Jerry Bruckheimer, you guessed wrong. If you said the highly addictive free-to-play MMO Vindictus, you would be right. Nexon just announced a new episode for its action-MMO. In early December, Vindictus players will be introduced to two new dungeons. Prairie Entrance's open field unleashes traps for mercenaries who dare tread on its soil. And the Ruins of Sanctity dungeon introduces the adventurer to an all-new Gnoll clan, some deadly toads, and a multitude of giant spiders. We can't forget the new boss battles: Goliath, Dim Gray, Warchief Black Scar and Giant Spider -- Giant Spider? You do not dare take on these formidable foes without mastering some of the new skills introduced with this episode. If you have mastered all of your current skills look, forward to learning Berserk, Lightning Fury, Large Shield Mastery, and other action-oriented skills. Vindictus continues to bring its fans more action-packed content. • The Perfect Ten: Weird staples of every fantasy MMO

If you take some weird, outlandish, or out-of-the-ordinary item and then saturate your life with it, sooner or later the bizarre becomes the accepted norm. So much so, in fact, that you'd cease to even think about it. I mean, do we ever question those magic boxes known as "microwaves" that mysteriously heat up our foods? Does anyone blink twice anymore when small computers tell us how to drive instead of nagging spouses? What about Carrot Top? Likewise, fantasy MMORPGs have erected trope after trope that we no longer question -- or even notice. Actually, the only time we'd notice one of these is if a game failed to include it. No matter how illogical and sometimes silly these MMO staples are when you think about them, we've been around them so long that we would no more notice them as we would the individual keyboard buttons that we type on daily. Still... you're thinking about them right now, aren't you? Those keys, cruelly dominated by your pecking fingers, pushing them back into place. What a techno-bully you are! In any case, come with us as we count down 10 weird staples that every fantasy MMO seems to include.

  • Ginormous robot spider invades Liverpool, England

Nope, we aren't sensationalizing anything -- that creature you see above really has made the streets of Liverpool its home. According to an in-the-know tipster, it's reportedly going to be stalking citizens and making all sorts of ruckus, possibly the kind involving pyrotechnics. So what's with England and these totally random stunts? First a full-sized UFO crashes in Potters Fields Park, now a gigantic spider shows up as part of La Machine. Be honest here: are any of you terrified?[Thanks, Chay]

  • Gameplay Wishlist: new mount abilities

Mounts in World of Warcraft are essentially organic vehicles that allow the player to traverse the landscape more quickly. Level 60 Epic mounts are faster than level 40 mounts, and of course flying mounts grant vertical movement. Mounts in other games are mostly the same, barring, of course, smaller games of which we might know nothing. It's a big game universe out there; it's possible. But it seems that there's unaddressed potential with these mounts. Sure, they look menacing, and it's better to ride than to walk, but is that all? Watching the recent Vanguard mounts video made us yearn for more from our noble steeds. Here's what we'd like to see in future games.

  • First Impressions: Mabinogi

Mabinogi is an engaging MMO by Nexon, the makers of Maple Story, Audition, and Kart Rider. The name is derived from the Mabinogion, a collection of old Welsh stories. In that sense, it's well-named; Mabinogi is billed as 'your fantasy life', and much of what happens in the game follows a gentle, pastoral atmosphere -- even the combat, to a certain degree. We had the chance to check this out, now that it's in open beta, and here's what we found. Keep in mind that this is not a guide -- we have no insider knowledge to report. This is merely a record of our opinions and experience playing this game for the first few hours. Excelsior!%Gallery-18335%
