  • Yes, another set of Amazon game deals today

Amazon refuses to stop tempting us with awesome deals, hosting an all-video-game Gold Box today -- including some popular discounts that came over the crazy weekend, revisited. The deal of the day is Just Dance 2 for $25.99, representing the perfect opportunity for you to pick it up as a gift for someone else. (Yeah, that's the ticket!) Lightning deals include Plants vs. Zombies for $13.99 on Xbox 360, and several deals that have yet to be named specifically. We've got "guesses" after the break courtesy of Thrifty Nerd. We say "guesses" because, as repeat deals, it's not too hard to figure them out. Likely highlights include discounts on the DSi XL, PS3, and Vanquish. In addition, there's another whole list of "family-friendly" discounts today for day 2 of Amazon's "17 Days of Deals." [Thanks, Noah]

Here's a question for you: How much do you really, really have to love a game to pay $8.00 an hour to play it? Considering how much we tend to whine about a flat $15/month fee, I'm guessing the answer is, "Only if it loved me long time." And yet, in 1991 this wasn't considered crazy extortionist practices -- it was dubbed "Being a pioneer." While online RPGs were nothing new by then, nobody had tackled the jump from text-based RPGs (MUDs and BBS doors) to graphical games due to the technology (limited modem speeds and access) and funding involved. It took the efforts of a Superfriends-style team to make this happen with Neverwinter Nights: Stormfront Studios developed the game, TSR provided the Dungeons & Dragons license, SSI published it under its Gold Box series, and Aol handled the online operations. Thus, 19 years ago -- six years before Ultima Online and 13 before World of Warcraft -- the first multiplayer graphical RPG went online and helped forge a path that would lead to where we are today. With only 50 to 500 players per server, Neverwinter Nights may not have been "massively," but it deserves a spot of honor as one of the key ancestors to the modern MMO.

If you're looking to buy PS3 sadness simulator Heavy Rain just in time for the PlayStation Move patch, Amazon has discounted it to $39.99 as its Deal of the Day. In addition, the retailer has devoted its Gold Box page entirely to PS3 stuff today, with deals launching through 11PM ET. Right now, you can also get Madden NFL 11 for $44.99. Future deals, according to Thrifty Nerd's guesses, may include 3D Dot Game Heroes and Transformers: War for Cybertron. Let the all-day Amazon refreshing marathon commence! [Thanks, MLC]

  • High-Def week in Amazon's Gold Box keeps the deals coming until June 11

If you've been waiting for the right time to make that next home theater upgrade Amazon should be in your bookmarks, as it's kicked off High-Def Week in the Gold Box running from now until June 11. There's plenty of Blu-ray movies & players, displays, projectors, and speakers that will be on sale over the next few day so we'd hit the read link and check the schedule just to make sure you don't miss a sweet deal. The Spiderman trilogy on Blu-ray is up at the moment with The Sopranos S1 on deck later tonight, but we'll wait and see for a price on tomorrow's deal of the day -- a Denon home theater receiver -- before pulling the trigger on any HTIB purchases.

  • Amazon shopping app for iPad launches

If your actual iPad purchase hasn't drained your debit card down to the red-alert level, Amazon has your back: the web retail giant has announced that the Amazon Mobile app is now fully updated for iPad, and it's available now on the App Store. The free app gives you all your favorite functions: browse the store, add to your Wish Lists, track packages and orders, watch movie trailers and listen to song samples -- even One-Click purchasing is included, otherwise known as "The Danger Room of Online Shopping." Point of aggravation, though: searching for music in the app only displays CDs, which seems somewhat backward. The mobile site for iPhone lets you search digital downloads, although you can't buy them (you have to add them to your wish list for later purchase); browsing in Safari on iPad is both better and worse, as it lets you get all the way to the point of buying an MP3 track before failing to download the helper app that in turn would download the track. Memo to Amazon: You probably want to fix that as soon as you can. Update: If you decline the helper app, you can actually download the MP3 track in the browser on the iPad -- but then what? Goodreader will open it, which is nice and all, but it's a bit awkward to do anything at that point except email it to yourself. Would it be so difficult to include the option for MP3 purchase and simply email the user a download URL? Granted, there might be some hiccups for those iPad users who rarely/never sync their devices, but c'mon, it's 2010 already. Even though you can access the MP3 store via Mobile Safari, there's obviously no way to get music downloads into iTunes except through the iTunes Store or via tethered sync. Amazon also delivers the Kindle and IMDB apps for iPad, just in case you felt like doing some reading or movie searching along with your shopping trip. All three apps are free.

  • PSA: Amazon's Gold Box is all Xbox 360 today

We hope you understand, dearest reader, that when we alert you to one of Amazon's game-related Gold Box sales it is in the name of public service. After all, any sale that features BioShock 2 brand new for $40 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for $46.50 (until 12PM ET) -- with other Xbox 360 "games and accessories" deals littered throughout the day -- is always worth bringing to your attention, right? And besides, who doesn't enjoy solving a few puzzles ... when they lead to extra savings: 12PM ET: "Prepare to journey to the darkest reaches of space in this RPG hit." (Our guess: Mass Effect 2, duh.) 2PM ET: "BioWare's deepest universe to date just got bigger..." (Our guess: Wait -- Mass Effect 2 ... again? Hmmm ... or maybe the Dragon Age expansion, Awakening?) 5PM ET: "Rock out with your Stratocaster." (Our guess: Rock Band -- likely of the "Rock Band 2" variety. But maybe just another guitar for your collection?) 7PM ET: "A legendary war between two of science-fiction's most popular characters." (Our guess: Aliens vs Predator, obviously -- but they're not "characters," they're monsters!) 9PM ET: "Charge up your Xbox 360 controllers." (Our guess: Clearly, this is the power to shoot energy from your hands. A lightning deal indeed!) 11PM ET: "This hit franchise comes to life on Xbox 360." (Our guess: The answer is Cars. Or, yeah, we have no idea whatsoever ... )

  • PS3 deals in the Amazon Gold Box today

Amazon's Gold Box is offering PS3 savings all day, with Dante's Inferno for $38.99 as the "Deal of the Day" (on Xbox 360, too). The additional Lightning Deals are listed below, starting with a Batman sale; and followed by Amazon's hints for the remaining deals. We've also included our best educated guesses -- share yours in the comments. (Note: Time listings are according to Eastern Time.) 9AM: Batman: Arkham Asylumm: $29.99 12PM: "This storied fighting franchise returns for another bout" (Guess: Tekken? Street Fighter? Fight Night? Tough to say.) 4PM: "You might have played this RPG on your 360" (Guess: No clue, actually, but the hint's not a super great pitch, is it?) 7PM: "Help Lego Dr. Jones through your favorite cinematic moments" (Guess: Lego Indiana Jones 1 or 2) 9PM: "Wave around your PS3" (Guess: Maybe Nyko's Blue Wave Remote? Either way, waving around your system doesn't sound like a very safe thing to do. Now, moving it, on the other hand ... ) 10PM: "Don't 'tapout' on this great MMA deal" (Guess: UFC 2009 Undisputed) Again, those are our seventh grade–educated guesses (thanks for nothing, overly-abundant fall harvest on our parent's farm), but we feel pretty confident you'll read the actual item listing rather than just purchasing sight-unseen. Right folks? Right? [Thanks, Kenny]

  • Left 4 Dead 2 for $35 today, lightning game deals on Amazon

    01.21.2010

We may not have been huge fans of Left 4 Dead 2 (except for Xav!), but you might be tempted to try it for yourself through Amazon today where you can pick up this Deal of the Day for just $35 on Xbox 360 or $28 on PC. Additionally, Amazon's Gold Box is featuring video game Lightning Deals throughout the day. Currently, the standard edition of Fallout 3 is going fast (for $18), but seven more deals are queued up. We only have hints as to what they'll be -- the next one sounds a heckuva lot like Assassin's Creed II [update: it is -- for $38.98] -- but if "the original zombie killing hit" teased for 5PM ET today doesn't turn out to be the Amiga/DOS classic Horror Zombies from the Crypt, somebody's getting sued for false advertising. [Thanks, Goldenchild]

    12.15.2009

We know that we've approached that proximity to Christmas where you feel bad buying things for yourself, but Amazon's got a pretty enticing offer running today. For just $39.78, the online retailer will let your grab a copy of Assassin's Creed 2 for the 360 or PS3. Yeah, it's probably money you should be spending on presents for your stupid family -- but once they see Ezio's first double-blade assassination, we're sure they'll understand. But wait, there's more! Today's Gold Box offers are all for games on the PS3 platform. You can find a full list of the clues for each of these time-released sales after the jump. The next clue, which goes live at 12 EST, references "an electrifying adventure in Empire City," so we're guessing that a discount for Hannah Montana: The Movie: The Game is right around the corner. What? Her concerts are freaking electrifying.

Sorry, folks looking for schweet dealz on washing machines and bounce houses -- this Friday's "Gold Box" event on Amazon is all about video games. Which games, we don't know. In keeping with tradition, at 12:01 a.m. PDT on August 28, the retailer will reveal the day's Gold Box Deal: a discounted game that'll remain on the cheap until it sells out or Saturday rolls around. After that, the lightning rounds begin. The identities of the specially-priced games won't be revealed until the moment they're up for grabs (although hints at what they'll be will appear beforehand). We'll be back with those once the sale kicks off. Until then, just keep wishing really hard that the game you've had your eye on gets put in the Box.

We gave proper warning yesterday, but now it's game time for the Amazon 'Gold Box' deals. We've been trying to get the straight skinny from Amazon what the deals are, but the company isn't giving us snuggle info love at the moment. So, while we cry, here are the hints: 4AM PDT -- Fallout 3 Collector's Edition 6AM PDT -- "No one fights alone." 10AM PDT --"Tower, this is Ghost Rider. Requesting a fly-by." 12PM PDT -- "Risk it all to go AWOL." 2PM PDT -- "Taking you back to the 80." 3PM PDT -- "This Warthog rush is "Limited" 4PM PDT -- "Give me some hi-hat!" 6PM PDT -- "Shaken, not stirred." Feel free to speculate. We'll keep knocking on Amazon's door and saying stuff like, "Baby, you know we love you. Just give us the info. Come on! You know NewEgg.com is just our lover, but we'll always love you."[Thanks, Dan]

On Wednesday, May 27 (yes, tomorrow), online retailer Amazon.com will be holding a full day of Gold Box savings for Xbox 360 games. We don't know if this specifically means retail discs or if XBLA titles will also be tossed into the mix. We've contacted Amazon to find out if we can get the list of deals -- or, at least, hints to what they may be. We'll update if we hear anything back.[Thanks, Matt]

Once again, Amazon has devoted a day of Gold Box deals to video games. This time, the offers aren't limited to one platform, so everybody has an opportunity to forget about this and accidentally miss out on something they wanted. At least, that's what happens to us. As usual, Amazon has clues up for the unrevealed deals. Can you solve the puzzle of what you'll be able to buy in a few hours? 8:00 AM: Warriors Orochi 2 for Xbox 360 ($25.98) 10:00 AM: Rock Band 2 for Wii ($29.98) 11:00 AM: Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for DS ($19.98) 1:00 PM: Buzz! Master Quiz for PSP ($9.98) 3:00 PM: Fallout 3 for PS3 ($39.98). 5:00 PM: Killzone 2 for PS3 ($44.98). 6:00 PM: Rock Band Special Edition for PS2 ($59.98). In addition, the Deal of the Day is Shaun White Snowboarding on basically every console. You can get an extra ten bucks off the Wii version if you buy it along with Wii Fit -- useful if you happen to be the guy who doesn't own Wii Fit.[Thanks, greatslack!]

For the few who didn't pick up this highly anticipated boxed set as soon as it came out (or imported it on HD DVD long ago), you're officially out of reasons not to own Band of Brothers on Blu-ray. Featured as an Amazon Gold box deal of the day, you can save 65% from the $99.98 MSRP, but you'll have to move fast. One of Amazon's all-video-game Gold Box Deals today, scheduled for 6PM PST, features the teaser text "Get bonus goodies with this radiant crescent." We puzzled out the completely transparent clue all by ourselves, guessing that it was Luminous Arc 2 with its included soundtrack CD. Then, just as we were congratulating ourselves for our moderate riddle-solving skills, Atlus totally spoiled the ending with an email to their "Atlus Faithful" mailing list, confirming the identity of the offer. It must have felt nice for them to reveal something early after all the ESRB spoilers. Now all we don't know is the price drop the game will temporarily receive -- but at least it's getting one. The $36.99 that Amazon currently charges for the SRPG is painful.%Gallery-15251%

Update: It's all going down right here. For thrifty gamers, Amazon's frequent video game-themed Gold Box sales days are sacred holidays. Admittedly, our luxurious lifestyle prevents us from drooling at the very thought of discounted video games -- but the hints that regularly precede these sales somehow always manage to draw us in. It's like The Da Vinci Code, only with cheap games instead of glaring historical inaccuracies. Here's the lineup for this Monday's Gold Box deals. We'll leave the Robert Langdoning up to our highly deductive commenters. 6:00 AM - Romp through the garden with your pets. 8:00 AM - A PS3 game that dreams are made of. 11:00 AM - This should hold you over on Xbox 360 until Final Fantasy XIII releases. 12:00 PM - A kid named Ben + Aliens + Wii = Bensational! 2:00 PM - Slimy and award-winning - what else would a PC owner want? 4:00 PM - An alternative to No Child Left Behind. 6:00 PM - Get bonus goodies with this radiant crescent.

"One skilled in the art of stealth -- Nintendo DS". That's the hint Amazon is offering for a Gold Box deal that will go up today at 6PM PST. We don't know the exact identity of the offer, but we can speculate! Our guess is Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, which just happens to be one of the best games of 2008. What a delight it would be to get it at one of the best prices of 2008! Other ninja-related games we can think of offhand include N+ (another honoree!), Ninjatown (wow, a lot of ninja games in our top 10), Tenchu: Dark Secret (not so great), various Naruto releases, the Izunas, Ninja Reflex, and Taito's Legend of Kage 2 -- which you can get for cheap right now. [Update: it's Ninjatown for $20!]

Amazon is doing an all-PlayStation 3 Gold Box tomorrow, and as promised over the weekend, we've got the clues for the Lightning Deals. Now, if only we could figure out what the 12PM-1PM game will be ... (all times Pacific): 6AM-10AM - Gooooal! 10AM-11AM - Hell hath no fury like this brother scorned. 11AM-12PM - 60% off these classic stop-motion monster movies in high-def 12PM-1PM - No tombs were harmed in the raiding of this underworld. 1PM-2PM - Mamma mia, here I go again / My my, how can I resist you? 2PM-3PM - Iceland has research facilities? 3PM-5PM - Keep the kids entertained in high-def 5PM-6PM – Watch Spidey in high-def 6PM-10PM - Kage bunshin no jutsu! Also, today marks the end of the retailer's 15 Days, 15 Video Game Deals promotion with the surprisingly decently-reviewed Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and Battlefield: Bad Company. Every MK purchase keeps the SS Midway afloat for an extra 3 minutes.
