Apple's latest flavor of OS X, Mavericks, is just weeks away from landing on customers' Macs, as the gold master has now been unleashed to the developer hordes. Though not a dramatic remake like iOS 7, it'll bring a bring a facelift to such apps as Safari and Calendar, along with better energy management, easier networking, iOS notifications, improved multi-monitor support and more. Developers on AppleSeed also got new versions of iPhoto and Xcode, along with various SDKs to support the new OS. According to 9to5Mac, end users will get the same version by the end of this month, so you might soon be able to stretch your Haswell MacBook Air's 12-hour battery life even further.

Last month at WWDC, Apple promised that consumers would be able to get their grubby paws on Mountain Lion come July. It looks like the latest version of OS X is one step closer to being fully-baked, with seeds of the Gold Master hitting the company's developer download site today. The operating system upgrade will run you $20 when it's ready for us non-developers. In the meantime, here's a hands-on with the beta version of the OS.

The gold master build of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion has been released and is available through the Apple Developer's Site now. The gold master release means that Apple is on target to release Mountain Lion to the general public this month, as was announced at WWDC in June.

  • iOS 5.1 leaked, bringing new unlock-to-camera action, more cultured Siri?

The gang over at BGR have allegedly acquired a bootleg copy of Apple's next mobile operating system iteration, iOS 5.1. In doing so, they have been able to confirm two rumored adds: a new unlock-to-camera action and Japanese support for Siri. In iOS 5.0, users can activate the camera from a locked device by double-tapping the home button and selecting the icon that appears. The new workflow? Wake the phone, then simply slide the lock screen toward the top of the handset -- making this feature easier to use and find. The other major difference is the expansion of Siri's vernacular -- more specifically, the addition of Japanese. iOS users in The Land of the Rising Sun will soon be able to get a synthesized "konnichiwa" from their iPhone. iOS 4.3 will be released to the general public next Friday, on March 11. Today, Apple uploaded the gold master seed for developers. The release remains under the NDA umbrella until next Friday, however, with details outside of those publicly discussed by Apple remaining off limits. The new 4.3 firmware will include many new improvements, including enhanced AirPlay and Personal Hotspot support. If you are a paid developer, head on over to the Apple iOS developer site to download your SDK and firmware. You will need to sign in with your credentials in order to get behind the paid firewall for these items.

  • Apple (re)posts Xcode 4 GM

Apple teased us Thursday afternoon with a sneak peek at the Xcode 4 GM before pulling it. Now, the company has re-posted the gold master and it's ready for registered developers to go and download. Xcode 4 introduces a fully updated integrated design environment for Mac and iOS developers with lots of beautiful new bells and whistles that were first introduced in a WWDC keynote last summer. It's been a long time waiting for this new tool to come out of beta, but we're all glad it's finally here. If you're a developer, head on over to the Apple devcenter and download a copy. Thanks, Chuck T.

  • Xcode 4 posted to developers, pulled, may hint at 10.7 beta release

Apple apparently posted the gold master of Xcode 4 this morning -- that's the final pre-release version before the final version is eventually offered up to the public. Unfortunately, just as soon as the new version of Xcode went up, it was pulled right back down again. Reports from developers who saw the release's Read Me say that it apparently listed Mac OS X 10.7 Lion as a requirement to run, and as you probably already know, that version of the OS isn't actually available yet. So one of two things is happening here: either there was a typo in the documentation, and Apple just meant that Xcode 4 requires 10.6, or Xcode 4 really does require a version of Lion, and a beta of that operating system will be available to developers soon. At any rate, we do know Xcode 4 is officially on the way. Apple's Developer Tools evangelist says on Twitter that we can expect it out very soon. The new version will bring a single-window UI for developers of Mac and iOS apps and a bunch of other new features for them to play with. Stay tuned, devs -- there'll be new goodies on Apple's dev portal soon enough.

Okay, so we've got to be close to a release at this point, right? After posting a WiFi-patched GM last week, Apple's back at it again with an iOS 4.2.1 build for its iPhone Developer Program members... and let's hope this is the very last one before it hits iTunes installations across the land. Or, you know, you can get it now if you shell out some funds in Cupertino's direction. Your call. [Thanks, Dave]

  • Apple outs new iOS 4.2 gold master that fixes iPad's WiFi woes

Can you feel the iOS 4.2 anticipation building? After all, it's not every day your tablet computer gets upgraded to multitasking. Apple just seeded a new gold master of iOS 4.2 to developers (build 8C134b, as opposed to 8C134), which deals with the WiFi issue that apparently delayed the launch. As long as this build is free of any more killer bugs, that new copy of iOS should make its way to proletariat hardware soon -- though obviously this week looks like a no-go.

The day all iPad users have been waiting for is just about upon us; iOS 4.2 has finally gone Gold Master. Apple is giving developers the go-ahead to download what will likely be the final release version of its latest mobile operating system and SDK. While all but the first generation iPhones and iPod touches will be eligible for the update, the big news is that the iPad will finally move up to the fourth generation of iOS, gaining multitasking and app folders. All the iOS 4.2 devices will be adding two marquee features: Air Print for remote printing via a networked Mac or compatible HP hardware, and Air Play to hand off video playback to the iOS-based Apple TV. The new OS should be available for general download sometime in the next couple of weeks. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

  • Windows Phone 7 goes gold master, begins rolling out to partners for final launch preparations

If you've been holding yourself back during these early rounds of the smartphone wars in anticipation of Windows Phone 7, your wait just got a tiny bit shorter. Today Microsoft is announcing that its fancy new mobile operating system has been released to manufacturing, making the idea of you holding an actual WP7 device in your hands that much closer to reality. The finished product is now rolling out to partners around the world where it will be getting carrier and manufacturer tweaks and additions, and going through the kind of pre-launch testing you would expect for a release of this scale. If you had any doubt that the Windows Phone 7 onslaught was close at hand, feel free to abandon them now. Furthermore, the folks on the 7 team have managed to cram a few last minute goodies into the OS, one of which we're particularly excited about. As you probably know from our in-depth preview of an early version of the software, we had a lot of issues with overflowing Facebook contacts in our phone. Microsoft has now solved that problem by enabling a contact filter system which looks for pre-existing matches to your Facebook contacts. If it doesn't find a match, it doesn't pull that contact into your address book (kind of like how Android filters Facebook friends). It's a welcome addition and should make the Facebook / Windows Phone 7 combo a lot more palatable to a lot of people. Furthermore, Microsoft has added functionality into the People Hub which will allow you to "like" someone's posts, and you'll be able to comment directly onto someone's Wall right in the hub. The company has also made tweaks and fixes focusing on feature discoverability (another issue we pointed out in the early look), along with the expected set of polishing and finish you'd expect from a product that's gone gold master.

  • iOS 4 gold build now available to iPhone Developer Program members

You've got to wait a couple weeks to get this if you're the run-of-the-mill iPhone type -- but if you've ponied up the Benjamin for an iPhone Developer Program membership (who's probably suffered through a handful of iPhone OS 4 beta builds over the last few months), you're now able to download the Gold Master seed of iOS 4 directly from Apple's site. Let us know if you manage to sprout a front-facing cam on your 3GS to test FaceTime or anything cool like that, alright? Update: We just updated to iOS 4 GM and haven't noticed anything particularly new or crazy yet. The install requires a beta of iTunes 9.2 to be installed as well, which adds in support for app folders and backups, but otherwise life is proceeding just like it did when we had beta 3 installed. We'll let you know if we spot anything as we go.

  • iOS 4 Gold Master Release Candidate almost ready for download

Finally! The iPhone OS 4.0 SDK iOS 4 SDK is almost (but not quite) ready to roll for all members of Apple's developer program, not just the paid App Store developers. However it's likely to be a week or two before everyone gets access to the GM release. Right now, it's still going to be a release candidate. Paid devs are almost ready to finally start shipping apps leveraging the new firmware's amazingly cool features. We can't wait until we start seeing VoiP and Game Center apps in action. Today, you'll be able to head on over to Apple's developer site and start downloading your copy of the 4.0 SDK release candidate. Although the site still shows beta 4, the gold master release candidate, as Steve announced at the Keynote this morning, should be ready momentarily. Of course, the iPad SDK is another matter. Any iPad SDK, when it appears (likely in the fall sometime), will remain under an ongoing NDA until that firmware and SDK is officially released. But the good news is that the new version of the iPhone firmware is just around the corner on June 21st. UPDATE: The developer site is DOWN.

  • iPhone SDK 3.2 goes gold, seeded to paying dev program members

Us freeloaders still have a bit of a wait left, it seems, but paying members of Apple's iPhone Developer Program (which now services iPad devs, too) now have access to the Gold Master seed of the iPhone SDK for OS 3.2. This is a pretty big deal since it's the very first version of the operating system to support the iPad, of course -- and seeing how the first volley of iPads hits retail this weekend, it couldn't come at a better time. Let us know if you find anything wild in this new build, and we'll do the same, alright? [Thanks, Kory H.]
