Starting this week, the first thing you'll see when you look up health conditions on Google in the UK is results straight from the NHS website. The tech giant is putting trusted information from the National Health Service (NHS) front and center in Search, placing information from the organization in Knowledge Panels at the very top of the results page.

Google's image results will soon tell you more about what you're seeing
Google's image results don't show a lot of details at first glance -- they typically only include a photo's dimensions on the bottom left corner, along with its source page's title and URL. Starting later this week, though, image results on desktop will be a bit more informative: The tech giant is replacing the images' size tags with new icons that reveal more about their sources' nature.

Google vows to make Search 'better' after redesign backlash
Last week, Google upset desktop users when it changed the appearance of Search. The changes were relatively minor, showing companies' favicons next to link previews, but critics argue that the changes cluttered an otherwise clean interface and made it difficult to distinguish ads from search results. Now, Google is backtracking a bit. In a tweet, the company said it is going to "experiment with new placements for favicons."

Online clothes shopping is still something of a pain. You might not always realize what choices you have, let alone which places have the best prices. Google is trying to help, at least. It's introducing a search feature on mobile that piles results for popular clothes, accessories and shoes into one section. You could find the ideal floral dress or puffer jacket with just a few keywords. You can filter results by department, size and style, and other tools help you quickly find buyer reviews and flip through photos.

Google Search will stop indexing Flash content this year
Flash was impressive back in the day. Games, animations and interactive elements were right there in your browser. But as the internet matured, Flash did not. In fact, it became a nuisance and a security risk. Adobe, which owns Flash, announced that it would end support for the technology by December 2020, and now Google says Search will no longer index Flash content or Shockwave Flash files in the coming weeks.

Google's privacy push adds Incognito Mode for Maps and Search
Among the new developments announced at Google I/O 2019, CEO Sundar Pichai revealed tweaks that will impact data retention and privacy. Filters that auto-delete web & app activity will become available starting today with support for auto deleting your location history "in the coming weeks," and he also announced extensions for the Incognito Mode you're familiar with from Chrome. Google rolled out a version for YouTube last year, and soon, it's coming to Google Maps too. After that, it's coming to Google Search "this year." If course, Incognito Mode doesn't mean all tracking is disabled, but just like Chrome, that activity shouldn't show up linked to your profile. And as Google continues to expand the use of machine learning and accumulate more data about us, the company is as concerned as ever about making sure users feel like they're in control of it. One final tweak will make your Google Account (and associated privacy settings) easily accessible from within its apps under your profile photo.

Google Search adds AR and big Lens upgrades
Google is going to start displaying search results in augmented reality, the company announced today at its I/O 2019 developers conference. "Sometimes what's most helpful in understanding the world," Google CEO Sundar Pichai said on stage, "is being able to see it visually." The idea, he added, is to bring visual information directly into search by letting users take advantage of their smartphone's camera. Google said it will use a combination of computer vision and augmented reality to turn your phone into a powerful search tool, whether you're looking to shop or wanting to learn more about the Solar System.

Google Search is testing inline before-after date filtering
Google is testing the option to filter search results by specific dates from directly within the search box on mobile and the web. Until now, only Google Search desktop users have been able to choose a "from" and "to" time period for results via the custom date range box. Mobile web and app users, meanwhile, were limited to set options including the past hour, 24 hours, week, month, and year. Going back and forth between drop-down tabs and input fields, however, made it a finicky process.

Google simplifies search data controls in wake of security issues
As part of its efforts to bolster security following the Google+ data exposure, Google is giving you access to data controls from directly within its most-used product: Search. Starting today, you'll be able to review and delete your recent Search activity, get quick access to relevant privacy controls in your Google Account, and be able to learn more about how Search works with your data. These options will be available from within Search on desktop and mobile, and in the Google app for iOS and Android in the coming weeks.
