  • CES 2009: ezGear showcases 'most advanced music game controller'

Even though it has been thoroughly thrashed with the ugly stick, ezGear's "You Rock Guitar" is actually a nifty bit of kit. Labeled "the world's most advanced video game and music controller" by its maker, the guitar is compatible with all current music games on the Wii, and swaps out the traditional strum bar and colored fretboard buttons for real strings and a multi-touch pad respectively (despite how it looks, there are no strings on the fretboard). There's a bunch of non-Wii functionality in the You Rock. It can hook up to your PC or Mac (where it works with programs such as Garage Band, Sonar, and Finale), and can additonally link to your iPod, iPhone, or MP3 player, allowing you to "jam along" with your favorite Showaddywaddy tracks (yes, we know). You can even connect it to a guitar amp or mixer!Alas, the peripheral's many functions mean it will launch in Q2 or Q3 with a price tag of $149.99. If you think you could get some use out of this besides playing on the Wii, that might make this worth it. While you wait, make the jump for the cheesiest trailer we've seen in forever.%Gallery-41114%

If you're one of the eight individuals on the planet yet to acquire Guitar Hero Something, roughly now would be a good time to start. In a heartwarming display of post-festive cheer bid to rid itself of excess stock, the troubled Circuit City is offering savings on two Guitar Hero game/guitar bundles: Guitar Hero III and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, both for $47.99. Alternatively, if you're a grizzled, orange-button-happy Guitar Hero veteran whose home and life is being gradually consumed by plastic peripherals, Amazon is willing to sell you Guitar Hero World Tour for $34.99 -- sans another instrument. Earlier in the month Activision released the first of a two-part European track pack for Guitar Hero: World Tour fans. While we're sure the music was swell the only real comment we got when we posted the first track listing was that one of the songs picked from one of the bands was terrible. Anyway, part two of the European invasion has landed on Xbox Live with each track asking 160MS points. This week brings us: European Track Pack 02: "Degenerated" - Backyard Babies (Sweden) "Por La Boca Vive El Pez" - Fito Y Fitipaldis (Spain) "Johnny" - Di-Rect (Netherlands) Anyone planning on grabbing these tracks? You know, we used to listen to Di-Rect when they were totally underground ... they're just too well known now.

Listen, we respect your intelligence, so we're just going to be straight with you. This is a really hard time of the year for news. On any other day, we'd probably let you discover that the Guitar Hero World Tour European track pack we told you about before had appeared on XBL for yourself. But it's Dec. 30, so here we are.European Track Pack 02: "Degenerated" - Backyard Babies (Sweden) "Por La Boca Vive El Pez" - Fito Y Fitipaldis (Spain) "Johnny" - Di-Rect (Netherlands) They're each 160 points, and we're sure some of them are by some fine bands. We think that picture above is one of them, but there's really no way we can be sure.

What the heck -- let's talk about Guitar Hero all weekend long. Today, we want to compare it with that head-to-head competitor, Rock Band. Before, we had fake band versus fake guitar god, but now the two games are on more of an even footing. If you've played both, do you clearly prefer one over the other, or is one fake set of instruments pretty much like any other? Does it come down to available tracks?

All right, this is going to be a pretty big update for everyone who loves downloading new songs, so listen up. First on the list, Harmonix is releasing a Foo Fighters three-pack for Rock Band next week in addition to the previously reported Rockin' Holiday Pack. Each song (listed after the break) goes for the standard $1.99 per individual track or $5.49 for the whole shebang. As for Guitar Hero: World Tour, it will be getting a three-song pack as well; however, this pack consists of songs from three separate bands. All individual GH:WT songs are also priced at $1.99. Check out that list after the break, too. You can grab these tracks, as well as the Rock Band ones, off the PS Store when it updates this coming Tuesday, December 23. Furthermore, Activision has revealed its DLC plans for the month of January, which includes tracks from Blink 182, Wolfmother, Silverchair, and a full album from Oasis. Also, interestingly enough, World Tour will be following in Rock Band's country footsteps by offering up three country tracks the week of January 8th. Yee-haw! Activision has revealed the January line-up of downloadable content for Guitar Hero World Tour will be fronted by Mancunian professional scowlers Oasis. On January 29, the eight tracks from 2008 album "Dig Out Your Soul" that haven't already appeared as World Tour DLC will be yours to download.* Other than that, we'll be getting various themed weeks: one on country music, one with Australian bands, and one based on, um, the works of Travis Barker.* INCOMING: Wii Fanboy opinion on modern music to show we are 'down with the kids': "Dig Out Your Soul" is probably their best album since 1995 -- not difficult to believe, because they've recorded some real nonsense since then.December 23: "Use Me" by Hinder "Because of You" by Nickelback "Light it Up" by Rev Theory January 8th: "Me and My Gang" by Rascal Flatts "Ticks" by Brad Paisley "Hillbilly Deluxe" by Brooks & Dunn January 15th: "What's My Age Again" by Blink-182 "Lycanthrope" by +44 "Low" by Travis Barker January 22nd: "Tomorrow" by Silverchair "Dimension" by Wolfmother "Outtathaway!" by The Vines January 29th: (Oasis) "Dig Out Your Soul" by Oasis (full album, each track available separately) See embedded footage of these on the other side of the jump. %Gallery-23491%

[Update: Ruh-roh -- Harmonix has just sent out a press release in which the Wii isn't mentioned. Looks like we're waiting for these!]Here's something to while away those Christmas Day hours traditionally spent arguing with family/feigning enthusiasm for horrible presents: Rock Band downloads! Harmonix has announced a trio of Holiday tracks, all of which should be available for download on December 23: "Hanukkah Blessings" by Barenaked Ladies "Christmas Is The Time To Say I Love You" by Billy Squier "Blue Christmas" by The Pretenders No "Fairytale of New York"? Bah. Also, MTV Multiplayer reports that neither Activision or Konami has anything Holiday-related planned for Guitar Hero World Tour or Rock Revolution. Wait, people actually bought Rock Revolution? How ... quaint. Footage of all three lies in wait past the break!%Gallery-19119%

  • Buy Guitar Hero: World Tour, get five free songs

Activision is giving you a little something back in the form of five free downloadable tracks if you buy Guitar Hero: World Tour before New Year's Eve. It only applies to the "Complete Guitar Game" variety that retails for $99.99, which is the package that comes with the game and a guitar controller, but not the standalone game or the more expensive "Full Band Kit". DLC is usually about $2 a pop, so you'll be saving about $10 with this deal. Of course, if you own the game already, this simply means you are getting 5 songs for free. Some people will try to compare this deal with the 20-song DLC Rock Band 2 offered a while back, but in this case you actually get to pick and choose which songs you want.

Last week, we mentioned a new Guitar Hero World Tour holiday offer where, with purchase of a World Tour bundle before December 31st, you can score five free downloadable tracks. We're pleased to inform you that the offer is now available and your free DLC awaits. To participate in the offer, simply make your way to World Tour's free content download redemption page and enter both your World Tour serial number and owner ID from your manual. Then, like magic, you'll receive your free tracks. And seeing that we don't have a World Tour bundle handy, we weren't able to proceed through with the redemption process. So, we aren't entirely sure how you select the five DLC tracks or if it's a pre-selected bundle. It's like blazing new trails.[Thanks, Adam O.]

  • Rock Band 2 works with other instruments, could miss Christmas

Harmonix has confirmed to Game|Life that Rock Band 2 will boast full compatibility with all other Wii instruments. That is super-great news for gamers, though whether the title will make stores in time for Christmas is another matter entirely.Harmonix announced a December 18 release date last week, but Game|Life's Chris Kohler scoured the official press release and discovered a disturbing detail in the small print: December 18 is the date that Harmonix will begin shipping Rock Band 2. The company says that a further 5 - 7 days will pass before shipments arrive in stores, meaning it could miss Christmas entirely. Guitar Hero World Tour, meanwhile, continues to sell out everywhere -- particularly the best-selling Wii version. For EA and Harmonix, "D'oh!" doesn't even begin to describe this mess. For its part, Harmonix has assured us all that it "cares deeply" about getting the franchise right on Nintendo's system. They've promised downloadable content that will "work seamlessly with an SD card," tons of online support (in the form of regular new battles), and a "fully functional online world tour." The developer has pledged that future Wii versions of their games will release at the same time as those on other platforms, and apologized for its dopey handling of Rock Band 2 on Wii. No need to say sorry, Harmonix -- it's our Holiday money you're missing out on![Thanks, Chris!]

  • Activision to offer five free DLC tracks to GH: World Tour guitar bundle owners

    12.13.2008

A recent offer on the official Guitar Hero: World Tour site has had us scratching our heads all day (much to the chagrin of our dandruff-covered keyboards). The oddly-worded promotion states that if you purchase (or have purchased) the 360 or PS3 versions of the Complete Guitar Game bundle of GH:WT before the end of the year, you'll be able to "choose five free downloadable tracks." The promotional site is currently adorned with a banner asking potential downloaders to "check back soon".We're confused as to why they're only extending the offer to purchasers of the $90 Complete Guitar Game bundle, which only includes a wireless guitar and the game disc, and not to owners of the $190 full band kit or standalone game -- perhaps its a measure to boost sales of the guitar bundle? We also don't know why Wii World Tour-ers are excluded from the deal. Also, from what pool will we be "choosing" our five free downloadable tracks? The pre-existing DLC? A new batch of track packs? The complete discography of Michael Bolton? Hopefully we'll know more when the promotion goes live.

    12.12.2008

[Update: Developer HMXHenry has confirmed a December 18 release date in this post on the Rock Band forums. Good to see our fears were unfounded! Thanks, Kevin!]A confirmed release date isn't the only news surrounding Rock Band 2, however. Doubt has been cast over the Guitar Hero World Tour/Rock Band 2 instrument interoperability that was reported in a recent IGN preview. Now, that same preview has been pulled, and a statement from Harmonix Community Moderator Eric Chon on the issue doesn't flood us with confidence: "We have not yet made an official announcement regarding both a release date nor third-party compatibility". Until we get some clear statements on this from Harmonix, all we can do is second-guess Rock Band 2's status; right now, the entire situation is pretty confusing.
