Cavalier grabs DirecTV to complete its Triple Play bundle
Just under a year ago, we heard that the relatively unknown Cavalier (bizarre slogan and all) was looking to make a dent in the Hampton Roads, Virginia TV market. Not sure what all went wrong there, but now it's looking to television mainstay DirecTV to help it get things off the ground. The company will be offering locals the shot at a Triple Play package, with the high-speed internet and digital phone service coming directly from Cavalier and the TV service coming from DirecTV. We're told that this C3 bundle could save customers upwards of $240 per year compared to similar packages, but we'd definitely call 'em up and run the numbers before jumping in blind.
Cox dishes 13 new high-def channels to Hampton Roads, Virginia
After gifting Hampton Roads, Virginia with a few fresh high-definition channels in early November, the carrier has came bearing real gifts in December. Starting this week, users in the region will find 13 newcomers in beautiful HD, bringing the total to 47. The high-def additions are: Lifetime Network, Lifetime Movie Network, Hallmark Movie Channel, USA, MTV, CNBC, Nickelodeon, CMT, Sci-Fi, Spike, Bravo, VH1 and Planet Green. For whatever reason, Cox also threw in the SD version of Chiller, even though the HD version is more than accessible. At any rate, the company is also planning to serve up MLB Network beginning in the New Year, not to mention an undisclosed amount of new HD channels in 2009.
Verizon's FiOS TV expansions: November 8, 2008
Not only did Verizon pick up nearly a quarter-million new FiOS TV subscribers in Q3, but it's looking to make sure even more Americans have an opportunity to join in during Q4. This week, the carrier has received approval to light up its fiber-based TV service in several more New York communities -- Port Washington North in Nassau County, the Town of Fishkill / City of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County, Schuylerville, Throgs Neck and Edgewater Park in the Bronx, and Sheepshead Bay and Gerritsen Beach in Brooklyn. Additionally, it added in 53 new HD channels in Richmond / Hampton Roads, VA, 10 more in Harrisburg, PA and 16 in Rhode Island. Cox adds a few HD channels in Hampton Roads, Virginia area
It's been awhile, hasn't it Hampton Roads? Cox Communications is finally stepping back up to the plate and handing out a few more high-def channels to enjoy, bringing Nickelodeon HD (729), CMT HD (733), Spike HD (755), VH1 HD (767), and MTV HD (722) to the table. We're also told that Palladia HD has been relocated to slot 876, but we reckon it'll fit in just fine there in the late 800s. Not a bad way to start the weekend, eh?[Thanks, Michael]
Virginia's WAVY-TV joins the crowd, produces local news in HD
While citizens in the Roanoke-Lynchburg area have been enjoying their local news in high-definition for a few months now, WAVY-TV is bringing the same luxury to mums, dads and offspring in Norfolk / Portsmouth / Newport News / Hampton Roads. The NBC affiliate just flipped the switch this week, marking the first time local news was offered in HD anywhere in the Greater Hampton Roads area. So, are y'all impressed with the quality? Cox lines up 4 more HD channels for Norfolk / Hampton Roads, VA
Although Cox subscribers up in NoVA have had the four HD channel we're about to mention for months now, we suppose late really is better than never. Reportedly, the carrier is gearing up to launch Bravo HD, USA HD, SciFi HD and CNBC HD in the Norfolk / Hampton Roads area of Virginia, with the go-live date pegged for July 24th. Verizon beefs up network, expands FiOS in Hampton Roads, VA
Look out Cox -- you aren't the only television provider in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area expanding your network. As it's done so many times before, Verizon has announced its intentions to string its fiber optic-based network to more of the Hampton Roads area, and as if that weren't enough, it'll be upgrading systems in Hampton, Portsmouth, Poquoson and York counties while continuing work in Chesapeake, Newport News and Virginia Beach. Of course, it still has to garner the appropriate cable franchises from a number of locales, but at least those frustrated by limited options can count on one more arriving in the not-so-distant future.
Cavalier looking to compete in Hampton Roads, VA
We'll be honest -- we're not exactly sure the television hotbed that is Hampton Roads, Virginia would be the first place we'd look to compete in the industry, but Cavalier Telephone & TV apparently sees opportunity. The Richmond-based company -- which stands as "one of the few survivors that emerged as a telephone service industry player after the phone business was deregulated in 1996" -- is reportedly gearing up to compete with Cox and Verizon in the region. Interestingly, Cavalier actually pushes its digital TV signals over Verizon-owned lines, and if you're wondering how it'll compete without high-def, the company is already busy "signing deals with networks so Cavalier can carry their channels in HD." Hey, if one more in the mix keeps prices (more) reasonable, we're all for it.

Well, would you look at that. Nary 48 hours after we heard that Cox Communications was getting set to upgrade its fiber optic network in the Hampton, Virginia area, subscribers in said region are already reaping the benefits. Reportedly, Cox has dished out not one, not two, but ten new high-def options to customers in Hampton Roads / Virginia Beach. Wondering what those newcomers are? Try The CW HD, CNN HD, NHL Network HD, TLC HD, Versus / Golf HD, Animal Plant HD, Science Channel HD, Travel Channel HD, Food Network HD and yes, NFL Network HD as well.
