Far Cry Classic will launch on February 11 in North America, Ubisoft announced. The HD revamp of the Crytek-developed original will be available on Xbox Live and PSN for $10 one day before it lands on Xbox 360 and PS3 in Europe. Far Cry first launched on PC in May 2004, and had players assuming the role of Jack Carver, a captain being pursued by a team of "highly trained mercenaries." The open world FPS was set on a South Pacific archipelago with a variety of environments ranging from rain forests to canyons. Ubisoft says Far Cry Classic will include "revamped cut scenes" as well as a new user interface. [Image: Ubisoft]

  • Kojima seeking studio to remake Metal Gear Solid... again [Update]

Update: Kojima has tweeted that "a rumor about remaking MGS1+2" is "not true," and that his statement "has been modified in the thread or something." Kojima further elaborated that he'd want to remake MGS1 and 2 in Fox Engine if possible, but that Kojima Productions is too busy with Metal Gear Solid 5 and "other prioritized titles." "I wouldn't mind if talented creator from outside studio making this happen," Kojima said, though that is different from saying that he is actively seeking a studio to fill that role. Original: Metal Gear series director Hideo Kojima is currently seeking a studio to remake Metal Gear Solid using the Fox Engine, Gamereactor UK reports. Kojima noted his interest during a recent roundtable interview, after a fan requested remakes for the first two Metal Gear Solid games. The Twin Snakes, a 2004 remake of the original Metal Gear Solid, was developed by Silicon Knights during the studio's brief stint as a second-party Nintendo developer, and remains a GameCube exclusive. Series compilations like Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection feature the original PSone version of Metal Gear Solid. While Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 were remade for 2011's release of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, the original game in the series continues to elude an HD makeover. Kojima noted that some of Metal Gear Solid's mechanics would require updating for a potential remake, but gave no further details. Kojima previously expressed doubts that Metal Gear Solid could be updated for modern audiences, explaining that "It was a game made for a certain era -- not just the story, but the controls and everything about it reflect that era in which the game was made." Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD developer Just Add Water expressed interest in producing a Metal Gear Solid remake in a Twitter reply to Kojima earlier today.

After regarding it a mere rumor just days ago, series producer Hideo Baba announced an HD remake bundle of PS2 and GameCube RPG Tales of Symphonia and its Wii sequel Dawn of the New World at the Tales of Festival in Japan. The HD remake collection is expected to launch on October 10 in Japan and in early 2014 in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Announced for PS3 only, the pack was revealed with the working title Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. That sounds much better than "Perfect Edition" to us. A now-pulled listing on a Sega Japan release calendar revealed plans for a PS3 Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition, listed as due in December for ¥5,229 ($66). Though no other details were given, the title pretty much says it all: the first two Yakuza games, originally made for PS2, updated for release on PS3 – concurrent with the Japanese release of Yakuza 5.Though subsequent Yakuza games included movie recaps of the events of the series, these would be the ideal way for players to get caught up on the surprisingly deep story of a guy who walks around Tokyo getting threatened by gangs. We're checking with Sega now to try to learn more about this collection.

An HD remake of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee has been in development at Just Add Water since last year. Now Oddworld Inhabitants' Facebook page has offered an update: it's not just a remake. ... Well, okay, it's still technically a remake, but with enough effort behind it to also qualify as a "reboot." Are you still with us?Rather than updating the original Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee 2D artwork, Just Add Water will be using the original PSOne game "as a blueprint" for an HD remake built from scratch. We'll get our first taste of the game later this year, ahead of its planned launch in the summer of 2013.Update: It looks like studio coordinator Wil Bunce is doubtful the remake will launch Summer 2013. In a forum post, he says that there's "not one person on the development team who thinks that's going to happen."

HD remakes are becoming more prevalent in the video games industry, as a means of introducing a new generation of gamers to something they may have otherwise never played. Frédérick Raynal, designer of the original survival-horror game, Alone in the Dark, said he's totally on board with an HD remake."I would love an HD remake one day and I hope it will happen, one day," Raynal responded when asked about the possibility at the conclusion of his GDC postmortem. "I think Infogrames holds the rights; I'm not sure about that."Atari published the last entry in the Alone in the Dark series back in 2008. If someone wants to get a remake out in time for the 20th Anniversary of the original game, they'll have to get it out within the next nine months.
