  • Telltale: Episodic drop-off 'substantially less' on iOS

That stack of semi-completed games on your coffee table is either a reminder of how you habitually abandon good entertainment, or a teetering celebration of your healthy, well-prioritized life. (But this is a video game blog, so we think it's the first thing.) In the case of Telltale's episodic downloads, you don't even have the haunting benefit of physical leftovers. "In episodic games, usually the first episode ends up selling the most and it's one of the key reasons we have come to sell our game series primarily in the 'Season Pass' format where you get all the episodes for one purchase price," Telltale Games Producer Dave Felton told Gamasutra. While the practice offers no guarantee that you'll play every episode, Telltale can at least ensure that you purchase all of them -- except on the iPhone, where a "Season Pass" has yet to be implemented within the company's lineup. (In comparison, season passes exist on PSN, but not on Xbox Live.) Felton suggests that iOS devices are unique in that episodic drop-off is "substantially less than we have seen on any other platform to date," and suspects that the synergy between Apple's devices and its App Store "work together to drive that difference." Unlike Xbox Live Arcade, for instance, games on the App Store can easily be pushed into visibility by customer reviews and feedback. Telltale found that Hector: Badge of Carnage, its first externally developed series, even saw sales rise between episodes. It's Telltale's job to curb player ennui in their game design, but Hector's momentum indicates that a fluid marketplace can be just as important for bite-sized content.

If the world needs anything, it's more gritty British cop humor -- luckily for humankind, all episodes of Telltale's Hector: Badge of Carnage are on sale now through Oct. 24 for $2.99 each. All three episodes of Hector are available on iPhone and iPad, so if you have some time to kill this weekend and your copy of Hot Fuzz is MIA, Hector may be the man to save the day. Or at least add more awkward comedy to it.

If you're still not too disgusted by the thoroughly yucky antics of Straandlooper's Hector: Badge of Carnage, you'll be able to pick up the final chapter of the adventure series soon. Subtitled "Beyond Reasonable Doom," the final episode will drop on iPad and iPhone tomorrow for $4.99 and $6.99, respectively. PC, Mac and PSN releases are expected "in the very near future." Of course, the question on the forefront of our mind is what sexually transmitted disease Hector is going to poke fun at in this third installment. We're pretty sure they've covered all the major ones in the past two -- we hope this means that lesser-knowns like Supphlydiahitis, Grumbles and Mega-Crabs get their time in the spotlight.

The second episode of Straandlooper's crude, episodic adventure series, Hector: Badge of Carnage, has finally been given a proper release date: Thursday, August 25. Now, if you're paying attention, you know that's just a fancy way of saying "tomorrow." Like, the day after today.

  • Hector: Badge of Carnage Episode 2 coming this fall

If you weren't too disgusted by the exploits of Detective Hector in his first adventure game outing, We Negotiate With Terrorists, you'll be pleased to learn that he'll make his grand, slovenly return this fall. Straandlooper Animation has announced that part two of the unapologetically nasty series, Hector: Badge of Carnage - Senseless Acts of Justice, is now scheduled for an autumnal release on the iPhone, iPad, PC and Mac. Better yet, the untitled third chapter will launch even later in the fall. We think this is a perfect release window for the franchise's sophomore installment. Just as the leaves are changing, and the punishing heat of the summer is replaced with the crisp, still air of fall, a cranky police officer will make a joke about gonorrhea on your cell phone. Lovely.

Being a giant, beloved video game site has its downsides. For example, we sometimes neglect to give independent developers our coverage love (or loverage, if you will) as we get caught up in AAA, AAAA or the rare quintuple-A titles. To remedy that, we're giving indies the chance to create their own loverage and sell you, the fans, on their studios and products. This week we talk Richard Morss, Straandlooper's co-founder, and development leads Dean Burke and Kevin Beimers about their ribald adventure game, Hector: Badge of Carnage. How did your company get started? Richard: Straandlooper was started by two "veterans," Alastair (Ali) McIlwain and Richard Morss, and a founding team who had been involved with the kid's series Lifeboat Luke: Tim Bryans, Dean Burke, Kevin Beimers, Ciaran Oakes and Colin McCusker -- all of whom have been or will be involved with the production of the Hector games. The mission was to look realistically at the global animation market place and then do what we wanted to do anyway! At a time of niches and no license fees for anything anywhere, content creators may as well be truly independent and see where they get to. Having secured development funding we set about creating a raft of new stuff, including Dean Burke's Hector.

  • Hector: Badge of Carnage Episode 1 review: Gross cop, bad cop

Hector: Badge of Carnage is a filthy game. That may seem like a blunt way to start out an evaluation of the Straandlooper-developed, Telltale-published episodic adventure trilogy; the first episode of which arrived on PC and Mac earlier this week after a nearly-yearlong stint on the iOS App Store. As those who've already played it on its native platform can attest, the game is characterized by its repugnance. At every juncture, it attempts to shock or delight its players with a level of perversity not usually present in Telltale's catalog. After watching the opening cinematic -- in which a cop's head is blown off by an unseen sniper, his body slumped across a pile of similarly deceased officers -- I feared the game would use its shock value as a crutch. My fears weren't exactly soothed by the first big puzzle, which saw me take a string off [a gross thing], attach it to a [grosser thing] and fish a wire out of [an even grosser thing]. But despite its crude exterior, a bit of genuine cleverness manages to shine through Hector -- though it takes its sweet time in doing so.

Looks like Telltale's plans to bring Straandlooper's foul-mouthed iPhone adventure title Hector: Badge of Carnage to even wider distribution channels are moving a bit faster than we anticipated. The Telltale Games blog has unleashed a second trailer for the gruff crime drama, revealing that the first of the series' three episodes will launch on PC, Mac and iPad next Wednesday, April 27. You can still pre-order Episode 1, which is subtitled "We Negotiate With Terrorists," for $9.99 -- which will also net you a free download of Puzzle Agent for PC or Mac, and will send 10 percent of your purchase price to Japanese disaster relief efforts. That's a whole lot of nice for a game about a decidedly mean detective.

The self-professed "not for kids" iPhone adventure game, Hector: Badge of Carnage, is getting a little boost from Telltale. The company's SVP of marketing, Steve Allison, confirmed a new partnership with Straandlooper, the Northern Ireland-based indie developer behind the well-received Hector game. Together, they will publish all three planned episodes of the slovenly cop's adventures on the PC, Mac and iPad through this fall. Currently, the first episode of Hector: Badge of Carnage is available for iPhone on the App Store.
