Following the major Beyond update back in August, Hello Games has added features to No Man's Sky on a more frequent basis. Following the latest update, there’s a new way to traverse the game’s massive number of planets: inside a giant mech. You'll be able to hop inside the customizable Minotaur Exocraft and explore in relative safety, as environmental hazards like radioactivity and extreme heat or cold don’t affect it.

No Man's Sky has won over many players after its rough launch, thanks in large part to a string of major updates that brought long-awaited features to the game. The next big release, No Man's Sky: Beyond, was revealed several months ago, and now Hello Games says it'll be available August 14th.

The studio behind 'No Man's Sky' has a new, bite-sized game

Hello Games is known for No Man's Sky, an expansive space-exploration game that received heavy marketing from Sony ahead of its launch in 2016, and rocketed studio founder Sean Murray to infamy and stardom. No Man's Sky endured a turbulent release period, but developers continued to roll out updates and deliver on their most ambitious promises, and this year it was nominated for Best Ongoing Game at The Game Awards. But before No Man's Sky, Hello Games was the home of Joe Danger, a cartoony racing title that found great, yet comparatively mild, success in the early 2010s. Hello Games' new project, The Last Campfire, is a lot more like Joe Danger than No Man's Sky.

Hello Games teased a major, "eerie" update to No Man's Sky last week, noting that it would arrive just in time for Halloween, and now we have details on what The Abyss has in store. As the name implies, the update is all about improving and enriching subaquatic life.

'No Man's Sky' is getting a spooky update next week

Few games in recent memory have enjoyed as strong a resurgence as No Man's Sky. The galaxy exploration game was widely criticized when it was released in 2016, as it had some teething problems, including not having much to actually do. It was only after the "Next" update arrived a few months ago that most players really seemed to get hooked. While Hello Games has added more content since then, such as the Pilgrim motorbike, the first named update since "Next" will land next week.

‘Sea of Thieves’ could learn a thing or two from ‘No Man’s Sky’

The second Sea of Thieves campaign-slash-major update hit Xboxes and PCs last week, and it is, in a word, dull. Cursed Sails isn't too dissimilar from the first campaign, The Hungering Deep, in that the main quest is basically just a case of sailing from island to island to find the next clue. The new equivalent of the boss battle is identical in many ways, too. It's not so much a challenge as it is simply showing up with enough resources to keep your shift afloat, crew alive and cannons firing until you inevitably win. Alongside the humdrum quest, though, are several meaningful updates to the core game. There's positive growth here, and as No Man Sky's NEXT update has shown, continually adding content and making serious changes to a game people were initially disappointed with can eventually pay off. But, five months on, Sea of Thieves still needs more.

Today, the developer of space exploration game No Man's Sky, Hello Games, revealed more about the long-awaited update, called No Man's Sky Next, that will launch on July 24th. This massive upgrade will introduce plenty of new features to the game, including multiplayer, new playable perspectives (both first person and third person), unlimited base building and command freighters. You can see a trailer for the upgrade below.

In March Hello Games announced that No Man's Sky would come to Xbox One this summer, and now we have a release date: July 24th. Hello Games founder Sean Murray made the announcement while showing off the upcoming Next update on Inside Xbox, but so far we haven't heard if it applies to PS4 and Steam as well. No Man's Sky Next will include expanded support for multiplayer, as well as 4K on Xbox One X, plus all of the game's previously revealed updates. He also explained a bit more about the new multiplayer features, which will let players team up with friends to thrive and survive, or even attack other players. Structures you build together will be shared with all players, while space battles and customizable race tracks are also confirmed. According to Murray, this isn't the end for NMS either, as Hello Games plans to continue to support it this way "for the foreseeable future." Update: Murray tweeted that Next is arriving for PC and PS4 as well on the 24th.

No Man's Sky is coming to Xbox One this summer and it's bringing a massive update, called "Next", with it to PS4 and PC as well. It's so massive, in fact, that it's even got its own logo. There's no word on what it'll include, but previous updates Foundation, Pathfinder and Atlas Rises all drastically built upon the scope of the game, so you can expect significant additions. In a tweet, game founder Sean Murray said Next is "our largest update so far."

Such was the lack of concrete information as to how the final consumer release of No Man's Sky was going to play, many gamers felt cheated by the distinct absence of multiplayer features. Developer Hello Games has gone some way to giving the people what they've wanted today with the third major update since the title's launch. "Atlas Rises" (aka update 1.3) adds the beginnings of real-time multiplayer to the space exploration game, though admittedly, "interaction with others is currently very limited."

'No Man's Sky' update adds more than just ground vehicles

When Hello Games teased big things coming with No Man's Sky's Path Finder update, it wasn't joking around. The studio has taken the wraps off the upgrade, and there's a lot more than what was hinted at. For one thing, there are multiple ground vehicles (exocraft in NMS lingo) -- you can travel across vast landscapes in a speedy hovercraft, the previously leaked buggy or a "lumbering" but capacious cargo hauler. You can even participate in custom-built races when you're done exploring.

No Man's Sky developer Hello Games has emerged from a marketing investigation unscathed. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority has spent the last two months examining claims that the game's steam page is misleading. Disgruntled players had taken issue with screenshots, videos and text which, in their opinion, showed the game with better visuals, performance and planetary exploration. These covered warping, ship battles and the complexity of extraterrestrial life. The ASA disagreed, however, concluding that the materials were largely representative of the final product and "unlikely to mislead" consumers.

When Hello Games said that its No Man's Sky Foundation Update was laying the groundwork for things to come, it definitely wasn't kidding. Reddit user eegandj has discovered multiple files that hint at the addition of a buggy to the open-ended space game. There's an incomplete 3D model of the ground vehicle, icons, textures and even a folder conspicuously marked "buggy" -- wonder what that's for? He even managed to bring the unfinished model into the game to see what it looks like in practice.

That promised Foundation Update for No Man's Sky? It's already here for both PC and PS4... and it includes much, much more than Hello Games hinted at just a couple of days ago. The centerpiece remains base building, which turns out to be simple but helpful. If you find an uninhabited base, you can use modular structures to make it your own -- including automated resource farming and storage so you don't have to traipse across the planet harvesting items. You can also hire aliens to research technology, and teleport to and from space stations. And did we mention that you can buy freighters, which serve as spaceborne bases that you can summon anywhere in the galaxy? If you hated the forced mineral-gathering marches that you experienced on launch, you might be happy with this alone. Thankfully, there's more.

There's some good news for No Man's Sky fans this Black Friday: The game is soon to get its first major update, according to a post from the developer, Hello Games. The bad news: Hello Games won't reveal much about the patch, except to say that it's called the "Foundation Update" and it will bring -- wait for it -- the foundations of base building. If that name wasn't punny enough for you, the studio adds that the Foundation Update is also "putting in place a foundation for things to come."

The internet hivemind's vile side was at it again this morning. This time, by apparently hacking the Twitter, Linkedin and email accounts of No Man's Sky developer Hello Games. Buckle up because this gets messy. "No Man's Sky was a mistake." Following an extended period of silence from the developer, that (now deleted) tweet went out earlier today. Thinking something was afoot, Kotaku reached out to the developer via email and was told that, "No, the tweet was not a hack, but rather a disgruntled employee. The email that we sent however was official." Except the publication had received no prior emails.

Crafting the algorithmic soundtrack of 'No Man's Sky'

While you've no doubt heard of No Man's Sky, the game, chances are you can't say the same of the band that scored its soundtrack. That's fair. UK noise/drone rock group 65Daysofstatic (65DOS) has quietly been releasing records since 2001. Its songs regularly stretch past seven minutes, and if they feature vocals, the singing is buried so deep in the mix that it's almost indistinguishable from the maelstrom surrounding it. All that is to say, the band doesn't write the type of music that gets stuck in your head. Which makes multi-instrumentalist Paul Wolinski's hopes for the score all the more surprising. "We wanted it to be hummable," he told Engadget.

No Man's Sky landed on PlayStation 4 this week, and it wasn't perfect. Cue a rash of backlash on Twitter, a few dozen angry Reddit threads and a handful of YouTube videos calling creator Sean Murray a liar and a fraud. Ah, the internet. Let's break down a few of the high-profile glitches that people have found so far:
