While the majority of April Fools' pranks are now well behind us for another year, there's one still running in Guild Wars -- at least until tomorrow! ArenaNet pulled off a great stunt this year with the announcement of the Guild Wars 2 "Commando." Then the team took it a step further by creating an all-new quest in Guild Wars that adds these future-warriors as part of a special holiday event for players. Today's One Shots of the in-game silliness was snapped by Connor, who explains the fun for those who don't call Tyria home: "M'name's Connor, and I was browsing through my daily Twitter and forum posts when I saw something new on the ArenaNet twitter account saying something about 'Corporal Bane's last day in Embark Beach.' Being the fanboy I am, I immediately rushed to log in, catching a ship over there. What did I see? A SWAT guy in body armour with a gas mask and an army helicopter. Truly awesome. He starts an instance quest that involved becoming a Soldier and destroying the 'Annihilator' who travelled back in time to kill 'Sarah' who is the mother of Gwen. This is during the Guild Wars, when the Krytan Army had invaded Ascalonian territory. Here's a quick snap from inside that instance. Location is Pre-Searing Ascalon outside of Fort Ranik!" One Shots is all about our readers' adventures. If you'd like to take part, it's really easy to do. Just snap a screenshot that shows off whatever you want to tell us about, then send it in with your note to us here at oneshots@massively.com. Be sure to include your name and the name of the game so we can credit you properly! We'll publish it here on Massively, and you can bask in the glow of those who like your image. %Gallery-112285%

The holidays are one of the busiest times of the year, and if your year-end schedule prevented you from taking part in EverQuest II's seasonal festivities, SOE has a bit of good news in store. The annual Frostfell events are being extended by a couple of days (through January 11th to be exact), so you still have time to finish holiday-themed quests and grab the time-limited items. The event features a number of quests scattered throughout Norrath's cities, as well as the Frostfell Wonderland Village which you can access through the magic closets in Qeynos Harbor, West Freeport, Haven, Kelethin, Neriak, Gorowyn, and New Halas. Full details are available on the official EQII website.

We're noting that there's a slew of Halloween events happening in the MMO world this month, and it comes as no surprise that Free Realms is getting in on the fun as well with a "Super Spooktacular" Halloween update. This is the topic of the latest "Ask a Dev" video with Associate Game Designer Julie Burness and Lead Character Artist Matt Case. The Q&A is done in costume, with questions from the players themselves on the Free Realms forums. The Free Realms devs discuss the new content which includes Halloween themed quests, werewolf and dinosaur costumes, and all kinds of holiday items -- like candy that turns players into... something else. There's going to be trick-or-treating in Free Realms as well, where players will have to scare others to get treats. We've got the video for you, so stick with us after the jump for the Free Realms "Ask a Dev" devoted to the Super Spooktacular Halloween update.

The day will eventually come when the world burns itself out and society as we know it collapses. In the final days, tin foil hat theorists will suggest many reasons for humanity's demise, ranging from Skynet to MMO addiction and everything in between. Regardless of how or why it happens, once we're gone, the cockroaches will evolve into a global hivemind and inherit the earth as nature always intended. All they will know of their simian Mountain Dew-guzzling predecessors of the ancient world is one thing: they apparently worshipped a cute little animal with an off-kilter pink bow, the cat-goddess Hello Kitty. The day they encounter her is the day they will know their new master, and labor to rebuild the world in her image. It's true -- well, not the apocalypse bit -- Hello Kitty will remain an enduring aspect of our times, if the past 35 years of her reign as a cultural symbol is any indicator. The world's ultimate iconic character from Sanrio has adorned 'all our stuff' since 1974. Perhaps more than ever, kids (and quite a few adults) are absolutely in love with Hello Kitty. The estimated USD 1 billion per year she's worth confirms she's hardwired into our pop culture consciousness, a fact which isn't lost on the game industry. We've already seen a legacy of Hello Kitty games spanning multiple iterations of consoles and handhelds, as well as PC releases. Hello Kitty's involvement with gaming is about to enter a whole new era though, with her introduction to the world of massively multiplayer online games through Hello Kitty Online.

The holidays are in full swing across several of the games we've been covering at Massively. In fact, a number of massively multiplayer online games now have holiday-themed quests, items, and unique winter settings, and NCsoft is getting in on the action as well. The latest holiday event announcement we've gotten word of is happening in Lineage II with its Saving Santa Event, which will run from December 16th through December 30th.The holiday event pits you against one "Thomas D. Turkey" who holds Santa Claus captive. If Santa is freed, he will visit random players throughout the world, placing presents into their inventories. Some of the rewards include specialized buff scrolls for your occupation, weapon exchange tickets, a year-round Christmas tree, and for a rare few -- a Rudolph Agathion (pet). If celebrating the holidays in Lineage II sounds like your thing, you'll want to check out the full announcement for the Saving Santa Event.

While doing my morning surf, I stumbled across some good-to-know news from the WoW LJ community. In this post by Platonic, she points out that the quest Honoring a Hero for the Harvest Festival is currently bugged for both the Blood Elves and Draenei. She also spotlights something else I thought was funny -- GMs apparently have telepathic pie powers! As the Harvest Festival just started today on live realms, I'm sure the reports of this problem has already reached the developer's ears and they're undoubtedly working on a fix for it. As always, as soon as we hear any news, we'll be sure to let you know. For now, looks like the Draenei and Blood Elves will just have to content themselves with some free festival food and drink to take away with them. (After all, free food and drink means Mages get a break, and the rest of us get to save some gold!)
