Apple has been working on some sort of autonomous car for a while now. The system — apparently an add-on to existing vehicles — has been seen in a research paper back in November. More plans appeared in a presentation by Carnegie Mellon professor of AI Ruslan Salakhutdinov this month. Now, according to a patent discovered by Autoblog, Apple's 2015 application for an autonomous navigation system has just been published.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has told Bloomberg Television that the company has had "conversations" with Apple, but that he can't confirm if those conversations were about an acquisition, as has been rumored. In the interview Musk said that an acquisition of Tesla by anyone was "very unlikely." In other news: GBA4iOS has released version 2.0 of its self-titled Game Boy emulator for iOS. The biggest new feature is iPad support. However, you will need to change your iOS device's date to use it... Square has teamed up with Product (RED) to release a special (RED) card reader. For every "SQUA(RED)" Reader ordered, 97.25% of the US$10 donation amount will go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, which could provide more than 24 days of life-saving medicine for someone living with HIV, the company says. A new aerial photograph posted on Instagram shows Apple is well along in demolishing the heck out of whatever stands on the site of its future campus.

  • Is Apple's iCar in a German auto magazine? Probably not.

Sure, we've heard rumors about a possible iCar before, but it's not every day that a German auto magazine (Autobild, in this case) throws some wacky VW concept with an iPod touch floating above it on its cover. We know that the two companies have collaborated in the past, with old Jobsy and Volkswagen head Martin Winterkorn supposedly sipping brandy and regaling each other with tales of their salad days, but up until now the closest we've seen to an actual product was that Space Up! blue concept interior from back in November of last year. Will you finally have the perfect set of wheels to dock your iPhone on the go? Doubtful... but feel free to dream.[Via Autoblog]

  • Apple and VW in talks over "iCar"?

You've got to love a story that starts: "It has been reported..." Nonetheless, leftlanenews has a report that Uncle Steve and Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn "met earlier this month in California to discuss the possible joint-venture." Apparently there's been some market research that shows a market for an Apple upgraded automobile (no, really, people like Apple's electronic gadgets?). Nonetheless, I think this one is still in la-la rumor land, though maybe this lends some credence to that Apple GPS rumor we posted about in June. In any case this makes me feel even better about a white Apple sticker on my Jetta! So what do you think, are you ready to run out and buy a VW/Apple iCar?Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

  • What would the iCar be like?

Continuing the trend of wild Cupertino-related rumors, while simultaneously bringing to mind an old joke about Microsoft and GM, a German magazine is claiming that Apple and Volkswagen have entered into discussions over a concept vehicle to be dubbed -- you guessed it -- the iCar. If you believe what they say, the two companies are in the early stages of planning for an entire line of new VWs that would incorporate Apple-sourced designs and features. Given that we've seen the firms collaborate in the past, this isn't too far out there -- though we wouldn't go wagering on this rumor, either. As you can see below, the Engadget gang chimed in on the news, but what do you think the iCar would be like?Ryan: "Can hit 100Mph, can't hit 100Kbps."Evan: "The scroll wheel would be hard to steer in sharp turns."Paul: "Give it a few weeks and you should be breaking 25Mph no sweat."Nilay: "It only uses one kid of gas!"Josh: "I hear it doesn't have 3G either."Chris: "Internal combustion engines were stupid until we decided to use them."Dante: "White."[Via AppleInsider, image courtesy of Chris3D]

  • Mitsubishi i (eye) Play car for iPod nano fans

We've seen big iPod cases, small iPod cases, cheap ones and expensive ones. But at about $15,000, with seating for four, the Play edition of Mitsubishi's i (eye) Car has to be one of the most expensive and biggest iPod cases we've ever seen. Eschewing the typical dock-based iPod/car integration scheme, the car includes a dash-based slot designed specifically for the iPod nano. And, if you want your case, er, car to truly match your nano, you can get it in white, for a mere $190 more. Considering that Apple wants about $150 to paint a MacBook black, that may not be such a bad deal. As long as it includes a scratch proof coating, that is.
