Where the ravens flock and the forces of Destruction hone their skills, there are secrets lurking. For brave explorers, the wild magics of Warhammer Online can often result in strange journeys -- if you know where to look, anyway. Today we have a tip from one of our readers, Taawa, on where to look if you're interested in seeing strange lands. He writes in to explain today's screenshot: "In Warhammer Online there is a Chaos portal behind the arena floor in the Inevitable City. Entering the portal will temporarily send you to interesting and unique places. Warhammer Online is an excellent game for explorers in part because of these kinds of finds. The character pictured is my main: a zealot named Lyram on the Badlands server." One Shots is always on the hunt for interesting screenshots of MMOs. If you'd like to take part, we'd definitely love to see your screenshots. Email them to us here at oneshots@massively.com, along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. Yours could wind up as the next one we post here on Massively! %Gallery-85937%

There are some times we're really glad these are just screenshots and that we're not standing where the person taking the shot is standing. Today would be one of those cases, because staring down the business end of that sword in Warhammer Online certainly doesn't look to be a terribly healthy place to be. This One Shots, sent in to us by Existentialist, gives us a first-hand look at a recent siege in Warhammer Online. He writes in: Snapped this shot of the bringer of death, Engra Deathsword, [when the] Order of Dark Crag laid siege to the Inevitable City. While Ruin does not take down this death bringer, our brothers in arms Hate do. If you've been involved in a huge battle (especially with a huge boss) we want to see your shots of carnage! Just email your screenshots to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name, the game it's from, and a quick note about what we're seeing. We'll post it here and give you the credit for sending it in.%Gallery-9798%

  • The Digital Continuum: Beyond Warhammer Online patch 1.2

Warhammer Online players are in the midst of the Bitter Rivals live event, plus another big new patch. I'm going to guess that it probably took a lot of development muscle to get the Black Guard, Knight of the Blazing Sun, Slayer and Choppa in a fun, playable shape. Not to mention the improvements to open RvR, Scenarios, PvE and general quality of life fixes.I have no doubt that the east coast developer has the next several patches planned out to some degree. Nonetheless, Mythic, Warhammer Online and its community are at a development crossroads -- and so today I'm going to explore a few possibilities.

Most people playing Destruction who have wandered into the Inevitable City can relate to today's Warhammer Online screenshot. After all, it's not every day that you're presented with a huge castle surrounded by an awesome light show. This screenshot came in to us from Brevia, who thought we'd enjoy seeing Rurg on his first trip there. Brevia writes: Rurg is the guild leader of the Azazel destruction guild Genocidal Tendencies. Here we find Rurg getting his first view of the eternal citadel in Inevitable City. You can't see Rurg's face, but trust me it's full of shock and awe at the wondrous and powerful site before him.If you've found an awe-inspiring area in your favorite game, we want to see it! Just send it to us here at oneshots At massively DOT com along with your name/server/guild and a quick description. We'll post it out here for all the Massively readers to see and give you the credit. (Besides, it's pretty cool to see your own screenshot up here, we think.)%Gallery-9798%

For all the awesome screenshots that are beginning to come in from the front lines of Warhammer Online, this is probably one of our favorites that we've seen so far. Today's One Shots comes in to us from David, who said that he took this particular screenshot while he was walking around near the Inevitable City. The aurora in the background is absolutely breathtaking on its own, but when coupled with dark and sinister-looking towers, that's a fantastic bit of in-game art design. Are you currently running around in Warhammer Online, enjoying the pre-launch festivities? If so, we want to see some screenshots from your adventures! Just send those to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name and a brief description of the scene. We'll take it from there and you'll get the credit for showing off such a cool spot.%Gallery-9798%

  • E308: Exploring an improved Inevitable City in Warhammer Online

Our discussion of Warhammer Online as seen at last week's E3 event continues, with a look at an improved Inevitable City. During our huge Massively goes to WAR feature spread earlier this year, we had the chance to tour the Chaos home base, and came away impressed. Last week we got the chance to see an updated version of the capital, and learned about what the extra time removing the other capitals has netted the Mythic Entertainment development team. Read on to hear Adam Gershowitz talk about city improvements, the endgame reward cycle, and how the two-cities structure has focused the player experience.Adam Gershowitz: Inevitable City is one of the two capital cities we're going to launch with. It has gotten bigger and better than it was previously. That's part of the reason why we're down to two capital cities - we keep throwing more and more stuff into the existing ones. It got to the point where we were like, "Well crud, just Altdorf and Inevitable City have as much content as we originally planned for all three city pairings. So we kind of wanted to finish the job, to make sure it's really really top-notch so we're focusing down a little bit more. What that does is it actually changes the campaign up a little bit.

Diet Warhammer Online: same great taste, less content. Is it bad that the recently re-branded Mythic Entertainment just cut out a large portion of our Warhammer Online pie and put it in the deep freeze? Well it's certainly not good when a developer cuts content they've been talking about publicly for so long, especially when launch is only three or four months away. I've already written about why this MMO ode to classic tabletop trappings shouldn't be shoved onto shelves half-baked and I still feel like I'd rather see a delay than see so much content cut. While there have been plenty of delays already, that doesn't mean more would have been intolerable. I'm going to try and take an honest look at what the removal of four capital cities and four classes means for Warhammer Online. I will admit that when the news first hit, a vile and seemingly ancient sort of anger began to boil up inside my lungs. It was the onset of some form of draconian rage at the removal of so much content that I'd been personally invested in as a future player. I never really got into Chaos and planned on playing Dark Elves, but now a large part of that content is gone. At first I felt anger and confusion towards Mythic. It wasn't until after that initial knee-jerk anger passed that I was able to give some real thought to their choice and was able to consider the varied consequences.

Bonus Trivia: Calendar events will see new and interesting elements added to the city all the time. The designers have a tool just for this, which will allow them to add short-term content to capital cities and areas throughout the Warhammer world. With that last image seared into our mind's eye, we move on to the Chaos-haunted streets of the Inevitable city. Instead of white marble and smartly paved roads, the home of Tchar'zanek is all black stone, spikes, and horror. The sky is a roiling terror of black clouds and energy , and everything seems to be a grim mockery of the nobility seen in the human city. The analog to the Altdorf's market square, for example, is called the soul forge. It is the main tavern and bank area, just as the square plays that role in Imperial lands. The nearby tavern known as the Feasthall offers a glimpse into Inevitable City life; down below the rude stone of the hall a pair of pit fighters kill to keep their lives. We're promised that failure at the wrong quest can end up with your character as the evening's dinner entertainment. The square itself is dominated by the Apex, a ziggurrat attended by grim acolytes. A never-ending parade of doomed creatures scales the structure's steps, only to throw themselves into the ever-burning flame shooting from the top. Across the dark stone is the soul bank, the main banking location in the city's center. Unlike the simple tellers behind bars in the city Karl Franz built, the soul bank is an enormous structure filled with howling souls and staffed by macabre creatures floating in pillars of light. From a design point of view, that pillar of light serves a purpose. Just as the city designers placed taverns and banks in all areas, here they made sure that bank couldn't be obscured by griefing players. Bonus Trivia: Surrounding the soul forge are carts full of prisoners. Invading Empire players can free these men to aid with the conquest of the city.

  • Massively goes to WAR: Exploring Warhammer's capital cities

Last Friday afternoon we had the chance to sit down with Warhammer Online Development Manager Mike Stone. Mike is one of the minds behind the massive cities that sit brooding at either end of the racial pairings. Under his guidance, Altdorf (the Empire capital) and the Inevitable City rose before us in all their majesty. While we didn't spend any time in the captured versions of these capstone RvR targets, our time exploring these living, breathing areas was very illuminating. EA Mythic's attempt to involve the player in the lifecycle of their capital city is really interesting, and expresses itself in numerous ways. Read on for descriptions of these elements and far, far more as Massively investigates the neighborhoods and streets of Warhammer Online's mightiest metropolises.
