  • Infamous gets a series sale on PSN Europe ahead of Second Son

Infamous: Second Son is one of the first major PS4 exclusives to come to the console since it launched some three months ago, so it's kind of a big deal for Sony. That's why its Euro branch is chucking an Infamous sale at PSN users ahead of the game's launch next month. If you're totally new to Sucker Punch's elemental open-world action series, but you do want in on the whole caboodle, then the Infamous Collection offers the best value. It includes all three Infa-games - that's Infamous, Infamous 2, and the vampiric standalone expansion Festival of Blood - and it's down by just under half to £15.38/18.89 euros/AU$28.05. If you'd prefer, the three games are all on sale individually, and there's a 10 percent discount on all the purchases for PS Plus members. Check out the full list of discounts on the PS Blog. That trilogy of games features electric hero/anti-hero Cole McGrath, but Second Son introduces a new, smokier star in Delsin Rowe. As for whether the game is as smoking as its new protagonist, we'll find out when it hits PS4 in a month's time on March 21. [Image: Sony]

Sony has a new $300 PS3 bundle for sale, this time for fans of ultra-realistic motorsport and rather less realistic electromagnetics. The new 'Legacy' bundle, available now, includes the 500GB black PS3, Gran Turismo 5 XL, Infamous 2, and a 30-day voucher for PS Plus. Gran Turismo 5 XL, first released in January 2012, includes all of the racer's updates through to Spec 2.0, and a voucher for five bits of DLC. There are no fancy pants extras in the Infamous 2 disc, but it is the last chance to enjoy Cole's electric persona; Infamous: Second Son introduces a smoky new protagonist to the PS4.

Supposedly GameStop is planning a PowerUp Rewards member-exclusive sale from November 1 through November 14 for select Sony PlayStation 3 collections. Titles rumored to be on the cheap include Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection ($10), Jak and Daxter Collection ($10), Uncharted 1 and 2 ($15), God of War Saga ($20), Infamous 1 and 2 ($15), Killzone Trilogy ($20), the collector's edition of Journey ($15) and Ratchet & Clank Collection ($15). The rumored prices come courtesy of a NeoGAF thread featuring deal-seeking gamers. We called a few local GameStop stores and the employees we talked to said there's no indication on their end a sale is incoming. A few employees mentioned seeing the GAF thread, but had no email correspondence or indication in their system of the promotion. We've followed up with GameStop corporate as well because we totally want this to be a thing. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus for $10? Yeah, we totally back that idea.

  • PSN sales up last quarter, PS Plus membership nearly doubled during E3 week

PlayStation Network has been hitting its stride over the last three months, posting its highest "transactional sales" quarter yet in its six years of existence. In layman's terms that means more people purchased content directly through PSN from April through June of this year than ever before in the service's history.Jack Buser, Senior Director of PlayStation digital platforms at SCEA, told Joystiq this all started back at E3 with the announcement of the Instant Game Collection, and that "membership sales in PS Plus almost doubled" during the week of E3. Since the launch of the Instant Game Collection, five games have managed to dominate in total downloads: inFamous 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Just Cause 2, Ratchet & Clank All 4 One and Gotham City Imposters. Buser couldn't dive into what he called "the nuts and bolts" of PSN's performance (see: specific numbers) but did assure me the service is growing and becoming a more integral facet of Sony's approach. He also talked at length about PSN Day 1 Digital, which we'll have for you in a separate piece available later.

Your incentive for plunking down the cash on PlayStation Plus will be bolstered by a dozen new titles, Sony's Jack Tretton revealed today. While Tretton didn't reveal a full list of what PS Plus members will get in June, he called out a few titles including Infamous 2, LittleBigPlanet 2 and Saints Row 2. These free games will be available for download starting tomorrow.

  • Infamous 2: Festival of Blood review: Vamps and amps

The world of Infamous is all about character. The settings, from urban-gothic Empire City to moss-drenched, sweltering New Marais, ooze character. The protagonists, particularly Nascar-ready Cole McGrath and his bro-friend Zeke, are studies in character, seemingly ripped from a television show you've known and loved for years. And then there's you, the player. Do you have character? What sort? Will you be a good witch or a bad witch? Your character will determine how the games play out, and how the game world responds to you. For the standalone PSN downloadable Festival of Blood, Sucker Punch has turned a hat trick whipping up a tasty little Halloween treat that, in spite of its brevity, follows in the tradition of its larger franchise and provides some of the most intriguing game experiences of any game available now, downloadable or not. Without a doubt, it has the most character of any three-hour game I have ever played.

Sony announced its holiday lineup of PlayStation Move games, anchored by ... two games that are already out! In addition to the Move Pack add-on for LittleBigPlanet 2, Sony revealed that Move support will be added to both Infamous 2 and Infamous 2: Festival of Blood. The $14.99 Festival of Blood will include built-in support for the glowy controller, and will also include the update for Infamous 2 when it launches on October 25. After the break, find release dates for other Move titles coming this quarter, including Medieval Moves, Carnival Island, and EyePet and Friends. Actually, make that "release date," singular -- Sony's putting them all out on November 15.

If you're still getting your hands dirty in the extensive suite of user-generated content tools which Sucker Punch afforded to purchasers of Infamous 2, you've got another thing coming, buster. Well, a bunch of other things -- an update launched today unlocks the Titan and the Devourer (the two big minibosses from the game's campaign) for use in the mission creator. Why not tweak their settings to make them best friends? That's a thing you can probably do. Other additions in the update include an option to link your homemade levels together, and a peer review system for UGC missions -- which should help separate some of the wheat from the chaff while you're electrically sailing through New Marais. Check out Sucker Punch's site for more details on the patch!

Sucker Punch and Sony are teasing Infamous 2: Festival of Blood with a brief cutscene. It shows a shriveled corpse drinking superhero Cole McGrath's blood, in order to resurrect as some kind of super-vampire. If that's the kind of imagery that interests you, we suspect you'll find a lot more of it in the PSN game. After all, it's not only about fighting vampires -- your character becomes a vampire himself. This will be the go-to game for scenes of blood drinking, electrocution, and, we're guessing, bloodtrocution.

  • Infamous 2: Festival of Blood gets Truly Bloody this October [update: trailer!]

Electro-monster Cole from Infamous 2 is now an electro-vampire in Infamous 2: Festival of Blood, available on PSN this October. In this downloadable game, New Marais is infested by vampires. Cole is bitten, and must find the head vampire before the night ends, to reverse his condition. Does electricity hurt vampires? We'll find out, we suppose. Also, can you make a vampire game set in Louisiana and avoid comparisons to both Interview with the Vampire and True Blood? This post has already proven that you cannot. This was called a "brand new game available for download," which sounds more like a standalone PSN game than DLC. Update: The PlayStation Blog confirms that you don't need any other Infamous games to play this. It also posted the above trailer.

Having spent over ten years working on PlayStation-exclusive franchises like Sly Cooper and inFamous, Sucker Punch Productions is now becoming a Sony-owned developer. Sony announced the acquisition of the Bellevue, Washington-based studio this morning, formally adding it to the ranks of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. According to Sucker Punch Managing Partner Brian Fleming, "the relationship with SCE has provided us the flexibility and trust to take creative risks and invent new properties." Among the studio's known properties, inFamous 2 is notable for having been one of the top selling games in June. The next Sucker Punch project has not been announced, but we do know of another "acquisition" that may play a role in it: the studio was recently joined by former Halo designer Jaime Griesemer.

You've designed the perfect Infamous 2 mission, but it's lacking one small detail: a truck. Good news -- you can totally download a truck now, along with an assortment of other vehicles, as the game's first user-generated content DLC pack. The free DLC includes five vehicles from the single-player game for use in the creation of UGC. And for those of you who prefer to consume user-generated content, Sony also announced a new search feature, accessible by pausing the game. You can find content by multiple search vectors, including PSN usernames. As of now, it's unclear whether you can sort by presence or absence of trucks.

  • Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta details leap from Naughty Dog HQ to your eye sockets

You already read a mess of information about Uncharted 3's upcoming multiplayer beta back before E3, but now developer Naughty Dog wants to show it off in a slurry of walkthrough videos (which we've dropped after the break). The studio also revealed a variety of details about the beta, breaking down which gametypes and maps will be paired across the beta's three weeks -- it'll take up approximately 1.7GB of your precious HDD space. Additionally, ND says that the beta will allow for stereoscopic 3D, as well as split-screen co-op (though not both simultaneously, of course). As the beta goes live tomorrow for PlayStation Plus subscribers (that's still most of us!) and inFamous 2 owners, you may be wondering when you'll be murdering Drake with ... uh ... other Drakes -- unfortunately, the studio isn't sure just yet, but suggests keeping an eye on the official Naughty Dog Twitter account for up-to-the-minute info. Studio head Evan Wells also notes on his Twitter feed that the beta "should be on PSN around 2PM PDT tomorrow." He additionally points out that "Naughty Dog doesn't control this," making 2PM PDT somewhat tentative.

  • Duke Nukem Forever is all outta bubblegum for UK charts

After 14 years, it'd be sad if Duke Nukem Forever didn't enter Chart-Track's UK All Formats chart in the top spot. So, hail to the king, baby. L.A. Noire graciously slipped only one spot into second, despite a 54 percent drop in sales. We knew Rockstar's crime drama had a massive premiere, becoming the UK's fastest-selling new IP, but those debut numbers must have been massive to survive several large double-digit percentage sales declines the past few weeks and yet maintain such a high ranking. Rounding out the top three: Zumba Fitness, which only saw a 2 percent decline. Two other premieres made it into the top ten last week, with inFamous 2 and Red Faction: Armageddon heroically taking spots four and eight, respectively. Check out the full UK top ten after the break.

  • Infamous 2 review: A study in power

    by
    Griffin McElroy

    06.06.2011

Video games with super-powered protagonists must be a pretty sticky wicket for developers. Make your hero -- or totally rotten villain -- too weak, and they won't tear through crowds of the un-powered with satisfying gusto. Make them too strong, however, and they'll tear through them with unsatisfying ease. If the many, many superhero titles that accidentally tumble into these two unfortunate paradigms are any indication, the sweet spot between these two boundaries is extraordinarily thin. Infamous 2 integrates a number of minor improvements to its already polished predecessor, but it's biggest change might also be its most imperceptible. Moreso than in Infamous the First, Cole MacGrath has found the happy medium between strength and vulnerability. He finds his electrical equilibrium from his very first step into the lively playground of New Marais -- and, perhaps more impressively -- maintains that balance for the millions of steps that follow. %Gallery-118056%

  • InFamous 2 imPorts your inFamous Trophy data to grant rewards, alter story

    05.27.2011

Sucker Punch wants to reward its fans for being especially good ... or especially bad. IGN reports that InFamous 2 offers an option to import Trophy data from the original InFamous, which is then turned into starting bonuses in Cole McGrath's new adventure. We've got a rundown of what your Trophies are worth in the sequel after the break -- starting XP bumps and the like -- but the most interesting bit of info is that having unlocked specific story-related Trophies will actually alter the dialog and side missions in InFamous 2. We'd tell you what they are, but then you'd have to kill us. And also, we don't know, because IGN didn't say. Of course, you could also look at this feature as one big morality test: Will you be a goodie two shoes and choose not to import your data, or do it and effectively use a "cheat" right at the start of the game?

If you have a penchant for messenger bags, world-ending beasts and "it's totally not a toy" figurines, today's inFamous 2 news is just right for you. Beyond a thoroughly detailed photo tour of the game's "Hero Edition" (an "unboxing," if you will), Sony today released a brand new trailer for this June's third-person superhero-er. Rather than show off the game's New Orleans-inspired location as so many inFamous 2 trailers have before it, this one's all about the destruction of Cole's hometown: Empire City. Turns out that the enormous beast he was worried about in the last game is kind of a dominant force in his second adventure. Head past the break for some minor story spoilers from inFamous 1 and a whole mess of destruction in inFamous 2.

    05.17.2011

Infamous 2 is coming out in the UK, Germany and Ireland on June 10, and the rest of Europe on June 8. Yes, we usually make a bigger deal out of release dates than just dropping them all plain-like in the first sentence like that, but we need as much space as we can get to explain the different bundles available to European shoppers. No joke, you guys: There are five different versions of Sucker Punch's dichotomous action title available in Europe's shops. So, there's the basic, vanilla flavored standard edition, the Special Edition (which includes extra powers and an "Original Cole" character skin) and the Hero Edition (which includes a lot of things, including a replica messenger bag). However, Europe also gets a bundle that includes the game and a "good" blue or "evil" red DualShock 3 controller, as well as a 320GB PS3 bundle. No prices have been announced for the bundles, but really, what price is too high for premium crimefighting? Or ... um, crimemaking?
