Kensington's SecureBack case is like The Club for iPads (video)
Kensington already came out and admitted that employees don't actually use the locks handed to them on their first day of work. And yet, it's betting folks will want to swaddle their iPads in a thick layer of plastic and chain them to their desks. That, in a nutshell, is the idea behind the SecureBack, an iPad 2 case that allows you to lock down the tablet, armor and all, just as you would a laptop. That beaut you see up there is a three-part affair, with two pieces of plastic that come together to cover the back and are held together by a sliding slat. That's just the case, mind, you -- to lock it down you'll also need one of Kensington's ClickSafe locks, which the company already makes for laptops. It's up for pre-order now, with a standard version fetching $50 and a souped-up one with a kickstand going for $70. If you don't already have a compatible lock, you can also buy one bundled with the case, with that extra hardware adding thirty bucks to the cost. iPad 2 mockup, case appear at CES
We have already seen a few iPad 2 case renderings hit the internet, but Engadget hit the jackpot when they stumbled on a real-life case at CES. The case was developed by Dexim and included a notch for a front camera, a hole for a rear-facing camera and an opening for larger speakers. The case even enclosed a mockup iPad 2 fashioned out of aluminum. The mockup device was slimmer than the current iPad and featured tapered edges similar to the fourth generation iPod touch. Beyond the iPad 2 styling, the case also included a magnetic, removable Bluetooth keyboard that lets you use the iPad as a laptop. While intriguing, the appearance of this Dexim offering does not bring any new information to the table. All the iPad 2 physical characteristics embodied in this case have been hinted at in earlier leaked information and previous case designs, What is does do is cause us to stop and consider the source information that determined this case design. As we saw with Hard Candy Cases last year at Macworld Expo 2010, it is common practice for case manufacturers to produce mockup devices and prototype cases prior to a device's release. Dexim may have designed this case using information from sources that unofficially confirmed the hardware characteristics of the iPad 2. It is equally possible that the company is betting the bank that earlier rumors are correct with the hope that it can be among the first to launch a next generation iPad case. Regardless of their source information, the novelty of this iPad 2 mockup will no doubt turn heads at CES and will be a public relations win for Dexim.
Alleged iPad 2 cases show up with some interesting cuts (video)
Looks like some Chinese manufacturers think they know what the next-generation iPad looks like -- we've seen numerous pictures today of supposed cases all with the same features: a headphone jack, a hole for a camera on the back, just one dock connector (not two), and a mysterious slit on the bottom. So, what could that be? An SD card slot seems unlikely since the cutout predominantly strips away the back of the case, not the bottom edge. Our source speculates it might be the antenna -- if all the manufacturers saw was the aluminum case design, the cutaway could've been made as a precaution, not knowing exactly what it's for. (Then again, the antenna for iPad 3G is found on the top of the device). We're thinking it might be for a revised speaker design -- the cutout is located just above and behind the location of the current iPad's speaker. Maybe we'll find out for ourselves by April, and maybe we won't -- consult your own crystal ball for that one. Some more case designs in a video after the break.
