Bad news if you're still rocking an iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and hoped to install iOS 13 -- Apple won't support the latest version of the OS on those devices. Owners of the original iPad Air, iPad Mini2 and iPad Mini 3 will miss out on the swanky new iPadOS as well.

  • The iPhone 6 Plus won't fit Fallout 4's Pip-Boy (and I'm sad)

Thanks a lot, Bethesda. After the outfit's first E3 media briefing, I pre-ordered the Pip-Boy Edition of Fallout 4 because of course I want to put a real-life version of the game's stat-tracker and menu system on my forearm. All good, right? Well, I'm also in the market for a new phone and was eyeing an iPhone 6 Plus because it has a better camera and battery life compared to its smaller sibling, the iPhone 6. That's where the problems arise: Bethesda recently announced that the real-world Pip-Boy comes with foam inserts that fit the iPhone 4 and 4s, 5 and 5s and the 6 in addition to the Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5. The company also promises a customizable foam insert that'll accommodate "most other popular" handsets.

  • Rubix's wireless battery sticks to your phone with magnets

When you're spending most part of the day out and about, chances are at some point you'll have to whip out your portable battery to juice up your smartphone. This usually means stacking your phone on top of a cable-wrapped power bank, and then clumsily holding everything together with one hand. Doesn't sound very 2015, does it? It's annoying enough for a startup called Rubix to come up with a solution: slap a magnetized Qi wireless charging case (aka On Case) on your phone, and then let it snap onto a magnetized wireless charging battery (aka On Charger). Look ma, no cable!

  • Mophie's 'Space' battery cases bring more storage to iPhone 6, iPad Mini

Last year Mophie, a company best known for its mobile battery offerings, stepped into slightly new territory by releasing a battery-toting iPhone case with external storage dubbed the "Space Pack." Now, as if on cue, Mophie is unveiling new entries in the Space Pack line for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPad Mini. And, not to be forgotten, there's also a new standalone battery pack called the "Spacestation." They all look very similar to Mophie's existing battery solutions, but they include anywhere from 32GB to 128 GB of flash storage, which could be useful for anyone stuck with a paltry 16GB iPhone or iPad Mini. But, as is typical for Mophie, that convenience won't come cheap. The iPhone Space Packs and the Spacestation start at $150 for 32GB of storage, and jump up to $200 for 64GB and $300 for 128GB. The iPad Mini pack, meanwhile, runs from $200 to $400.

  • Here's what our readers think of the iPhone 6 Plus

Though the iPhone has always been a good (if not great) product, one area where it was lacking was size. If you wanted a bigger screen, you had to pick up an Android device. And plenty of people did, which is why Apple finally entered the fray last year with the iPhone 6 Plus. We really liked its camera and its beautiful display, though we found that the larger size "can fatigue even the biggest of hands if you hold on long enough." But while we didn't find the iPhone 6 Plus groundbreaking, we did note it brought much-needed freshness to Apple's lineup. But how did the 6 Plus' larger dimensions and updated design fare with consumers? Our readers were ready to let us know, writing reviews on the 6 Plus' product page to show us how this 5.5-inch device felt in their own hands.

  • RBS and NatWest add Touch ID login to their banking apps

If you manage your personal finances from a smartphone, you'll be familiar with the tiresome verification procedures that banks use to double-check your identity. To make everything a little simpler, RBS and NatWest are introducing Touch ID support to their iOS banking apps tomorrow. So rather than punching in a long-winded passcode, you'll just need a fingerprint to log in to your account. The feature is entirely optional though, so if you're worried that Touch ID isn't quite secure enough to protect your lifelong savings, it can easily be disabled on your iPhone 5S, 6 or 6 Plus. More importantly, the BBC reports that some in-app features will still require additional verification and, similar to contactless credit and debit cards, there will be an upper limit for new payments. So even if a crafty crook copies your fingerprint, most of the app should remain under lock and key.

  • Pressur is a simple barometer app

    by
    Andy Affleck

    01.30.2015

The iPhone 6, 6 plus and the iPad Air 2 added a barometer sensor. Ostensibly it is supposed to help the device better track your steps for the health app by knowing when you've gone up and down stairs. But there is no reason it can't also be used for weather purposes. That's exactly what Pressur does. It reads the data from the sensor and displays it on your screen. The app is simple enough. The main screen shows you the current reading. And the Log shows you a list of the most recent readings. I haven't completely figured out how they are supposed to work. Sometimes I see a lot of recent readings and sometimes it acts like I've just run it for the first time and it only shows me the most recent one. So, often the Trends diagram only shows me one or two data points making for a very boring graph. The app offers an in-app purchase to remove ads and adds some additional options (and maybe the ability to track more than a few data points?). It also allows you to add a trend graph as a Today widget. Pressur is a free app with ads or $0.99 to remove ads as an in-app purchase. It requires the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, or an iPad Air 2 and iOS 8 and up.

  • Have you heard? The iPhone 6 is REALLY LOUD

    by

    01.28.2015

(Original photography from pickywallpapers.com, photoshopping by Mike Wehner) You can always tell when it's the day after a big Apple news day, because we end up writing and publishing stories like this... iClarified (via Cult of Mac) recently updated their sound level test for iPhones to add the iPhone 5c, 5s, 6 and 6 Plus. The results will come as no surprise to anyone who owns one of the two newest iPhones - the iPhone 6 is the loudest, at 105.4dBA while the iPhone 6 Plus comes in second at 105.0dBA. The iClarified team found that the iPhone 6 is 10.1dBA louder than the original 2G iPhone. Sound measurements are logarithmic, so that means that the iPhone 6 is about twice as loud than the first iPhone. So, how loud is that iPhone 6 when you have the speaker volume cranked to the max? That's almost as loud as a power mower three feet away, and louder than a snowmobile. NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) guidelines say that you should be exposed to 100dBA sound levels for less than 15 minutes each day. The moral of the story? Don't crank that iPhone 6 or 6 Plus speaker up to the top level as it can adversely affect your hearing. For your edification, and to keep you from having to read even more articles about Apple's amazing Q1 2015, here's iClarified's video about capturing the sound level readings. Note that the location of the decibel meter varies depending on where the speaker is located on a particular model of iPhone.

  • Seidio OBEX Combo rugged case for iPhone 6: Review and giveaway

    by

    01.22.2015

It's so nice to see the flood of new cases for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, especially in the special genre of rugged cases. While some manufacturers are still trying to figure out how they're going to keep the big iPhones dry and protected, Seidio has jumped out with the OBEX Combo for iPhone 6 (US$89.95, on sale for $64.95) and iPhone 6 Plus ($99.95, on sale for $74.95). Specifications Dimensions (iPhone 6): 6.02 x 0.49 x 3.16 inches (152.84 x 12.36 x 80.25 mm) Weight (iPhone 6): 1.9 ounces (53.87 grams) Dimensions (iPhone 6 Plus): 6.80 x 0.50 x 3.59 inches (172.77 x 12.61 x 91.07 mm) Weight (iPhone 6 Plus): 1.9 ounces (53.87 grams) Meets IP68 rating for dust- and water-proofness. Exceeds MIL-STD-810F drop protection standard Design As with most rugged cases, the OBEX Combo (the combo refers to a combination of colors) is built like a tank. That doesn't keep the design from being Touch ID compatible, which is a plus. The case can be submerged in water up to 3.3 feet (1 meter) deep indefinitely, or up to 6.6 feet (2 meters) for 30 minutes. Rubber plugs keep the ports sealed against water and dust. The iPhone's touchscreen is a little bit less sensitive due to a second screen protector that's provided, but it worked well after I got used to pressing just a bit harder on the screen. The case comes with a holster clip for belt mounting, just what you'd want when driving heavy machinery around a construction site or walking around a factory. The case comes in four color combos, hence the name - black and gray, white and gray, ping and gray, and yellow and gray. Functionality As with most of these rugged cases, the case needs to be properly installed in order to maintain waterproofness. You'll want to watch the company's installation video for details: Still, the OBEX Combo was much easier to install than some competing cases I've reviewed. I liked the fact that the belt clip swivels and that the holster locks onto the case. I don't know how many times I've had phones that have just "jumped out of" holsters, so this is a nice design feature. I didn't try dunking the phone in the case, but it seems extremely solid and the rubber stoppers for the headphone and Lightning ports feel very secure. The case also features raised edges that should help protect the screen, and the screen protector itself has a 4H hardness rating. If there's one negative about the OBEX Combo, it's that it did seem a bit "slick" to me. The TPSIV (Thermoplastic Silicone Vulcanizate) rubber strip around the sides of the case is ridged on the corners, but not on the sides where it would provide a more secure grip. Conclusion Seidio has created a rather slim, but very protective case in the OBEX Combo. While it's not inexpensive, the level of protection afforded by this case can keep your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus from a variety of damage if you spend a lot of time outside or in hazardous conditions. Rating: 3-1/2 stars out of 4 stars possible Giveaway Have an iPhone 6? Want some real protection for that phone? We're giving away a Seidio OBEX Combo in the black/gray color combination. • designed by many AL13 v3 case for iPhone 6/6 Plus ... and a few more cases for you

    by

Design house designed by many has been around for a few years, with some fascinating products for Apple customers. Early on, the company was one of the first to come up with a protective aluminum bumper for the iPhone, and the AL13 bumper is now in its third iteration. In this review, I'll not only look at the AL13 v3 for iPhone 6 Plus, but several other designed by many cases and protective films. AL13 v3 Aerospace Aluminum iPhone Bumper (US$84.99 for iPhone 6 Plus, $79.99 for iPhone 6) The AL13 seen at the top of this post is wonderful minimalist protection for your iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. It comes in five different finishes: silver, black, champagne, space gray, and green, and is incredibly light - it adds only 0.6 ounces (17 grams) to the weight of the iPhone 6 Plus. Unlike some competing designs, no tools are required to install or remove the AL13. The company has created a two-piece design that features two protruding plastic pieces that lock into corresponding holes on the bottom part. Installation is a very quick snap, while removal takes a little bit of force. The interior of the machines aluminum bumper is lined with polycarbonate so that your iPhone is cushioned and the bumper won't scratch the iPhone's metal. There's a bit of a lip on both the front and back of the bumper to protect your iPhone's screen and back from flat drops onto the ground. That extra bit of height also accommodates designed by many's MPACT GLASS screen protector, which is included with the case. I found the AL13 v3 to be a gorgeous accessory to the iPhone 6 Plus, with the silver aluminum finish perfectly accenting the silver finish of my phone. The power button, mute switch, and volume rocker all use pass-through switches on the case, and their are ample openings on the bottom of the case for the headphone jack, microphone, Lightning connector port, and speaker. To top it off, the AL13 comes in a beautiful aluminum box, so it's a perfect gift for that iPhone 6 or 6 Plus owner you know. Rating: 4 stars out of 4 stars possible ThreeD Case for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus ($29.99 for iPhone 6 Plus, $24.99 for iPhone 6) The next case from designed by many is the ThreeD Case, which is a bit different from your ordinary run-of-the-mill polycarbonate case. First, it has a very unique 3D triangular pattern on the back side. While that looks good, it also provides an extra grip for those who fumble phones. Moving the case from side to side you can see the extra depth that is added by the pattern, which changes depending on how the light is hitting it. It's quite attractive, and the case comes in white, black, champagne, and space gray finishes to accent your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. Other than the stunning design, the ThreeD Case is somewhat similar to a lot of less expensive polycarbonate cases on the market. However, designed by many did use an "uber premium polycarbonate composite" for this case that is recyclable and RoHS-compliant, and they include an MPACT GLASS tempered glass screen protector. Rating: 3-1/2 stars out of 4 stars possible BEZEL Case for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus ($29.99 for iPhone 6 Plus, $24.99 for iPhone 6) The term "case" is really a misnomer for the BEZEL Case, as it's technically a bumper with no back. Think of the AL13, except without the aluminum on the outside, and you have the BEZEL Case. As with the other cases, designed by many includes one of the excellent MPACT GLASS tempered glass screen protectors with the BEZEL Case to provide extra protection for your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus display. The case comes in black, white, silver, champagne, and space gray, and features pass through buttons for the volume rocker and power switch. There's an opening in the side of the bumper for the mute switch, and the entire bottom of the case is open for unimpeded access. Rating: 3-1/2 stars out of 4 stars possible SLIM Case for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus ($24.99 for iPhone 6 Plus, $19.99 for iPhone 6) Finally, we come to the least expensive member of the designed by many case/bumper family, the polycarbonate SLIM Case. It's a rather generic polycarb sleeve with no special design features, really. It does come with the MPACT GLASS screen protector, and can be purchased in clear translucent, smoke translucent, black, silver, champagne, space gray and white. While you can get similar cases for quite a bit less from a number of vendors, they probably don't include a tempered glass screen protector. Rating: 3 stars out of 4 stars possible Giveaway Thanks to our good friends at designed by many, we're giving away one each of the AL13 v3 (silver), ThreeD Case (champagne), BEZEL Case (white), and SLIM Case (black) cases or bumpers reviewed here. Here are the rules for the giveaway: Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older. To enter, fill out the form below completely and click or tap the Submit button. The entry must be made before January 23, 2015 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time. You may enter only once. Four winners will be selected in a random drawing. One will receive a AL13 v3 aluminum bumper for iPhone 6 Plus valued at $84.99, one will receive a ThreeD Case for iPhone 6 valued at $24.99, one will receive a BEZEL Case for iPhone 6 valued at $24.99, and one will receive a SLIM Case for iPhone 6 valued at $19.99. • Mophie announces Juice Pack battery case for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Mophie is finally bringing its Juice Pack battery cases to iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users. Today the company launched pre-orders for the latest editions of the popular cases with prices starting at US$99.95. That price is good for either the Juice Pack Air for the iPhone 6 or the Juice Pack for the iPhone 6. iPhone 6 users can also splurge on the $119.95 Juice Pack Plus, which offers 20 percent more battery life than the Juice Pack Air, along with a shock absorbing shell. Of the three cases, the Juice Pack for iPhone 6 Plus offers the least amount of extra charge, promising an extra 14.5 hours of talk time. Given that the iPhone 6 Plus' battery already provides 24 hours of talk time, that's roughly only 60 percent more battery life. Still, the iPhone 6 Plus has a considerably more powerful battery than the iPhone 6, so another 14.5 hours may be all the extra juice you need. Take a look at their offerings for yourself right here on Mophie's website. No hard release date has been announced, but hopefully pre-orders will be shipping soon.

  • Five products from 2014 I can't live without: Steve Sande

    12.30.2014

Of all of the staff at TUAW, I'm probably the guy who gets to take a look at more hardware and accessories than anyone else. Let's face it, being the hardware review editor has both its rewards -- getting to see a lot of amazing products -- and its downfalls -- having to review some really crappy accessories. Here's a look at five products from the past year that truly changed the way I work and play. Logitech Keys-To-Go Keyboard (US$69.99) As a writer, keyboards are the interface between what's brewing in my brain and what gets published online or in books. I tend to be very particular about keyboards, wanting a specific feel and key layout when I do my work. Well, Logitech did the impossible in 2014, coming out with an inexpensive Bluetooth keyboard that works equally well on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The Keys-To-Go keyboard weighs just 6 ounces and is less than a quarter-inch (6 mm) thick, making it a great mobile or spare keyboard. Oh, yeah -- it uses Logitech's spill-resistant FabricSkin technology, so me spilling a beer on it is much less likely to send it to the island of destroyed keyboards. Logitech Type+ Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad Air (US$99.99) Yeah, I spent a lot of money on Logitech keyboards this year. My go-to iPad Air keyboard case is the Logitech Type+. This thing has an amazing keyboard feel, it's thin, and would you believe that I've only charged it once in the time that I've had it? My only gripe after a few months of use is that the bright red exterior cloth is starting to get a little grimy, but considering the amount of use it gets, I can live with that. In case you're looking for a photo of this keyboard folio case, that's it at the top of this article. Cambridge Audio Bluetone 100 Speaker (US$299.99) If you talk to my boss soon, tell him I need a raise. That's because when I review a product that's truly incredible, I need to go out and buy it for myself. That was the case with the Cambridge Audio Bluetone 100, a 100 Watt Bluetooth speaker that redefines desktop audio systems. Offering rock-solid Bluetooth connectivity, incredible room-filling sound, and a classic design, the Bluetone 100 is a winner. You will not feel bad about spending three Ben Franklins for this speaker. Olloclip 4-in-1 Photo Lens for iPhone 6/6 Plus (US$79.99) The camera in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is so good that I find myself using it for a growing number of photos, both those taken for personal use and even for TUAW reviews. But the built-in lens of the iPhone 6 Plus (in my case) sometimes lacks in terms of field of view or the ability to take amazingly sharp macro shots. That's where the latest version of Olloclip's 4-in-1 Photo Lens comes into play. Offering two macro lenses, a wide-angle lens and a fisheye lens in a lightweight package, the 4-in-1 is also much easier to carry around now that Olloclip provides a plastic clip and lanyard so you can keep the lenses close at hand around your neck. Apple iPhone 6 Plus (price varies with plan and capacity) I have owned every iPhone model since the original, and the iPhone 6 Plus is my favorite so far. The screen is big and beautiful, the speaker is actually loud enough to hear, and Apple Pay? I use it every chance I get. Does this mean that I won't jump to an iPhone 7 when they show up? Heck no. But at this juncture in time, the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are absolutely the best smartphones on the planet, and sales over the past few months prove that point. For many years, I've told people to just wait a year or so to get an upgrade if they really don't need one -- the iPhone 6 and especially the iPhone 6 Plus are worth paying your carrier's early termination fee and upgrading to.

  • Heyday goes 2.0, adds sharing, locking via Touch ID, and more

    12.18.2014

About a month ago I wrote a review of Heyday, a free personal journal app that captures location and photo information and turns it into a wonderful day by day photo journal of your life. I love the app, but wondered "where can they go from here?" That question was answered today with the release of Heyday 2.0, which brings some new useful and fun features to the table. First up is the ability to lock your Heyday journal away from the prying eyes of others... with Touch ID. While I don't use Heyday to keep a written journal - that's what Day One is for - some people might, or they may have photos or location info that they'd like to keep hidden from others. You can now set Heyday up with either a 4-digit passcode or just turn Touch ID on for protection. The app fully supports the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus now, but the feature I'm impressed with the most is the ability to share a day with someone else. Just grab a day, any day, and tap the share button. A web page is created for you (see image above), and a link is sent to the recipient so they can see what happened on that auspicious day. Here's an example page from a weekend trip last year. One sad thing - videos just appear as images, which explains the blurry photos in a few locations. In the Heyday app, they are movies that were captured on that day, and you can experience them in their full cinematic glory with a tap. All in all, it's a great update to Heyday, and as one of the developers told me, "it lays the groundwork for a whole lot of goodness for 2015".

  • Pad & Quill's Bella Fino wallet case for iPhone 6 Plus

    by

    12.17.2014

Yesterday I reviewed the Twelve South BookBook for iPhone 6 Plus and loved it; today, we're going to take a look at how another case manufacturer handles the big iPhone with leather. That manufacturer is Pad & Quill, and the case is the Bella Fino for iPhone 6 Plus (US$74.99). In keeping with the spirit of holiday giving, we're also giving this case away, so be sure to fill out the entry form at the bottom of the review. If you'd like 10 percent off of any order from Pad & Quill, be sure to enter the discount code ML44 when checking out. Specifications Dimensions: 6.5 x 3.5 x 0.55 inches (165 x 89 x 14 mm) Weight: 2.2 ounces (62.4 grams) Materials: Leather (Galloper Black, Whiskey, Dark Chocolate), translucent plastic for ID card pocket, 3M adhesive sticker Design If you're not familiar with Pad & Quill's work from our past reviews, then you're missing a lot - the company creates cases, bags, and briefcases, all made primarily from top-quality natural materials like leather and Baltic birch. The Bella Fino takes advantage of the new, thinner design of the iPhone 6 Plus by doing away with the wood frame of the Luxury Book for iPhone 6 Plus ($99.99), which actually doesn't shave any thickness off of the case, but does save 1.8 ounces of weight. As with all of Pad & Quill's products, the workmanship is top-notch. The leather is gorgeous, with perfect strong stitching inside and out. Like the Twelve South case yesterday, the Bella Fino features four credit card slots, an ID slot, and a large pocket for paper money or receipts. The big difference is in how the iPhone 6 Plus is held in place; Pad & Quill worked with another Minnesota-based company by the name of 3M to create a two-part adhesive patch that sticks to the back of your iPhone, yet can be removed without leaving any residue. The Bella Fino for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. To secure your iPhone we developed a NEW, Minnesota based, 3M clean release adhesive technology. We're not saying it's magic, but it is amazing! #iphonecase #leathercraft #walletcase #iphone6 #iphone6plus #magic #minnesota #3M A video posted by Pad & Quill (@padandquill) on Dec 12, 2014 at 2:56pm PST Unlike the Twelve South BookBook, the Bella Fino cannot be used as a stand for your iPhone 6 Plus. Things that Bella Fino has that the BookBook doesn't? A nice finish that isn't pre-distressed, so if you like beautiful leather you're going to prefer this wallet case. Oh, and there are six different combinations of exterior and interor colors. Functionality The Bella Fino case is incredibly fast to install. Simply remove the paper cover off of the adhesive patch, line up your iPhone 6 Plus, and then press it firmly onto the patch. It sticks to the patch until you want to remove the case, at which time you just need to give your phone a firm tug to release it. If that patch loses its stickiness at some point, you can purchase extra adhesive from Pad & Quill for $5.99. My experience with this material is that it really sticks to the phone very well, unless you remove your iPhone frequently or if the adhesive patch gets dirty. In case you're worried about how your iPhone will handle a drop while wearing the Bella Fino, it's pretty well protected all around the exterior with a bit of extra leather. The only place that's "naked" is the upper right corner, which has a cutaway for the iPhone camera and flash. Conclusion While Twelve South's BookBook is novel in appearance (no pun intended), Pad & Quill's Bella Fino is simply elegant - pure class in an iPhone 6 Plus wallet case. It's something you'd be proud to take out of the jacket pocket of your fine tailored suit, yet classic enough to look good when you pull it out of your jeans pocket. My only concern is the slight lack of protection for the camera portion of the iPhone 6 Plus if the case and phone are dropped. Shoppers looking for a deal an iPhone should swing by their local Walmart retail store this weekend. According to Bloomberg, the retailer is slashing the price of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 5s by as much as $50. These reductions are taken off Walmart's original retail prices, which already are lower than Apple's standard pricing. Pricing for the iPhone 6 starts at $129 for the 16GB model and $229 for the 16GB iPhone 6 Plus. Walmart also is selling the 64GB iPhone for $229. The 16GB iPhone 5s is eligible for a $30 discount, selling for $49. All these prices require a new two-year customer agreement with A&T, Verizon or Sprint. Unlike Walmart's earlier sales which were available both online and in stores, these iPhone discounts will be available only in retail stores.

Once you've upgraded to the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, using apps that don't take advantage of the full large screen can be aggravating, especially if one of those apps is an image service like Snapchat. Thankfully, Snapchat users no longer must suffer with wasted screen real estate. The iOS app has been updated with new layouts specifically for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Even if you're on an older generation of iOS device, this update has something for you. Captioning of images has been improved, including new features like pinch to resize, dragging of text, and changing the color of special text. Filter stacking has also been enabled, allowing you to add up to two filters to each of your photos. You can find the update right now in the iTunes store.

  • Grovemade's beautiful handcrafted Walnut iPhone Case

Grovemade makes some amazing cases and accessories out of wood, and we've covered a few of them before. Recently, a Walnut iPhone Case for iPhone 6 (US$99) came into the TUAW Labs for our inspection, and it's a gorgeous piece of work. Check out this review and then enter for a chance to win this hand-finished beauty from Portland, Oregon. Specifications Material: Oregon Claro Walnut Sizes: iPhone 5/5s ($79), iPhone 6 ($99), iPhone 6 Plus ($109) Weight (iPhone 6 case): 0.7 ounces (19.8 grams) Design The Walnut iPhone Case comes in two parts - a "bumper" that protects the sides of the phone and a back that adheres to the back of your iPhone with a removable adhesive patch. This design results in an extremely light and sturdy case. The wood is hand finished and is quite attractive; there are precisely-machined holes for speaker, Lightning port, headphone port, mute button and camera. For the power switch and volume toggle, wooden pass-through buttons make it easy to control power and volume. And hey, did I mention that the Oregon Claro Walnut looks great? I think Grovemade outdid itself with the Walnut iPhone Case. Functionality As opposed to earlier wood iPhone cases from Grovemade and other producers, the two-piece design makes installing the case a snap. You just place the iPhone into the bumper part, turn the iPhone and bumper over onto the screen, remove the paper covering the adhesive on the back, and press the back into place. Despite being hand sanded and finished, there's still a little bit of grain to the wood that makes it very easy to grip. I'd say that my favorite feature of this case is the fact that each one of these is totally unique in terms of the grain pattern and color. Conclusion Grovemade has taken their wood case design to the next level with the Walnut iPhone Case, making it lighter, easier to install, and just as protective as the earlier version. With their somewhat luxury price tag, these cases aren't for everyone, but if you're looking for something unique and handcrafted, this is it. Sadly, the Walnut iPhone Case is only available for pre-order now, so it won't make the perfect Christmas gift. Rating: 4 stars out of 4 stars possible Giveaway Yes, I know I said that these cases are only available for pre-order now, but one lucky iPhone 6 owner is going to win the Grovemade Walnut iPhone Case. The iPhone 6 Plus has been dominating the phablet market since its release, but thanks to United Airlines the device is about to become omnipresent on certain flights. Today United announced they will be equipping more than 23,000 flight attendants with the devices for company use and customer service. Flight attendants will start getting their iPhone 6 Plus' in the second quarter of 2015. United says the phones will allow attendants to make retail transactions, access company email, view airline manuals, and access the company's internet network. Attendants will also be able to report and follow-up on cabin issues, including needed repairs, through the phones. There's no word yet on how transactions will be handled, but it would be simple and inexpensive to equip the phones with card readers. Sam Risoli, United Airlines senior vice president of inflight services, had this to say on the iPhone program. We are thrilled to make this investment in our flight attendants. iPhone 6 Plus will enable them to deliver an even higher level of flyer-friendly service and will offer our flight attendants simple, one-touch access to valuable work information, enabling them to better serve our customers. In addition to giving its employees the iPhone, United announced plans to develop tools for customers using the iPhone 6 Plus. Whether this will be some version of Apple Pay or simply allowing transactions on the United app, we'll have to wait and see.
