Apple begins selling refurbished iPhone XRs
Apple has started selling refurbished versions of its iPhone XR, MacRumors has reported. Prices start at $499 for the 64GB model, giving you a factory-renewed phone with a one year warranty, box and cables for $100 off the price for a brand new model.
Nearly every top-selling smartphone in 2019 was an iPhone or Galaxy
It's almost a cliché to say that Apple and Samsung dictate the tempo of the smartphone market, but there's now more evidence to support that claim. Counterpoint Research has calculated that nine out of the top ten smartphones sold worldwide in 2019 were made by either Apple or Samsung -- Oppo's A5 was the only exception at fifth place. The iPhone XR had the clear lead, representing 3 percent of all phones sold, while the Galaxy A50 was the top Android phone on the list with 1.8 percent.
Apple will replace some faulty iPhone XS battery cases for free
If you have an Apple smart battery case that's no longer working correctly, don't toss it yet: Apple might replace it free of charge. The tech giant has launched a replacement program for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR battery cases manufactured between January 2019 and October 2019. In particular, it will replace cases that won't charge or only charges intermittently when plugged in, as well as cases don't properly charge the iPhone.

Razer case keeps your iPhone cool during intense gaming sessions
Razer is jumping into the crowded world of iPhone cases, but with (what else?) a decidedly gaming-oriented twist. The company's newly introduced Arctech and Arctech Slim rely on a custom-developed Thermaprene material and perforations to transfer heat away from 2018 and newer iPhones (including the iPhone 11 line) as well as the Razer Phone 2, theoretically preserving your handset's performance and battery life while you're in a frenzied game session. The jury's still out on that, but Razer's tests showed the phone staying within recommended temperature limits for two hours where an unspecified rival case saw the phone run hot within 20 minutes. If nothing else, the Arctech won't make things worse like some cases can.
Apple's iPhone XR and iPhone 8 get big price cuts
If you're not jumping straight into the future with Apple's new iPhone 11 family, picking up a slightly older model is one way to upgrade without spending "flagship" money. Now that the new phones have been announced you can pick up the previous-gen for even less, now that price cuts have been announced for the iPhone 8 and iPhone XR. The two-year-old iPhone 8 now starts at $449 without any sales or discounts, while last year's mainstream model, the XR, is available for $599. You won't get the latest and greatest hardware -- can you live without Deep Fusion photography? -- but these phones are still slated to receive iOS updates that keep them secure and add new features, including iOS 13 when it's released later this week.
The iPhone 11 is Apple’s colorful new handset for the masses
It's time for another Apple event, and at the Steve Jobs theater in Cupertino, the company blazed through a ton of new products from gaming and streaming services to iPads and Watches. But as is usually the case each September, we're also getting to see new iPhones. When the iPhone XR launched last year, it was a less-expensive version of the iPhone X meant to reach a wider audience. In other words: people less willing to spend a thousand bucks on a phone. It's become the most popular smartphone in the world, according to Tim Cook. To keep wooing that sizable segment of shoppers, Apple is announcing a new iPhone 11.
It's time to take Google's Pixel phones more seriously
Google got a lot right with the Pixel 3a. It has excellent cameras, reliable performance, respectable battery life and clever software. Best of all, at $400, the Pixel 3a costs half the original price of the flagship Pixel 3. And this formula of compelling features at a relatively lower price has proven successful. Google said Pixel sales for this quarter are double what they were a year ago.
Apple hopes interest-free iPhones will boost slow Chinese sales
As smartphones get more expensive, and the innovation in new devices gets less grand, there's less reason to upgrade your device every two years. It's a problem for all device manufacturers which rely upon handset sales to grease the wheels of their business, but Apple thinks it has a solution. The company has teamed up with a number of Chinese banks to offer interest free credit on a number of new iPhone purchases.
Samsung's Galaxy S10e isn't the start of a cheaper flagship revolution
The Galaxy S10e is one of the more interesting announcements to come out of Samsung's Unpacked event. Not that it was a surprise, with rumors as far back as October signaling its existence. Nor is it actually that unexpected. Product prices are inflating, sales are slowing down and meaningful innovations are few and far between. But none of this is news. The most notable thing about the S10e is Samsung's acknowledgment that it's once again time to mix things up -- that the S10 and S10+ won't meet everyone's needs.
