High-flying iOS motorcycle stunt sim Joe Danger: Infinity offers a new daily challenge mode in its latest update, developer Hello Games told Joystiq today. Similar to the daily challenge modes featured in games like Spelunky and OlliOlli, Joe Danger: Infinity's once-a-day challenges pit all players against unique multifaceted level layouts every 24 hours. Scores are tracked both cumulatively and for individual levels -- committed players will rack up larger amounts of coins with every session, giving extra incentive to return to the mode on a daily basis. Hello Games additionally notes that Joe has crashed a total of 2,268,112 times across all Joe Danger: Infinity play sessions, as of earlier today. If you want to know what dying feels like, you should ask Joe -- he's suffered roughly 1,700 deaths every hour since the game's launch in January. [Image: Hello Games]

Joe Danger Infinity may have launched just last week, but it can already be downloaded at a discounted price. The game is now listed for 99 cents on the App Store, down from its initial launch price of $2.99 (£1.99 and €2.69 in Europe). Hello Games' latest creation has players launching off ramps, avoiding obstacles and pulling tricks as a miniature Joe Danger, collecting stars and coins while flying through the air. Joe Danger Infinity's hook comes in the form of multiple ride-able vehicles, such as motorcycles, cars and airplanes. It features more than 20 vehicles and 25 nostalgic unlockable characters.

Despite debuting on game consoles a couple of years prior to its iOS debut, the original Joe Danger was a bit of a surprise hit on the App Store. Now its sequel, Joe Danger Infinity, has landed as well, and it's just as insane -- and fun -- as its predecessor. Like the first title, Joe Danger Infinity tests your skills on various obstacle courses, where your character runs (or drives, or flies) forward automatically and it's up to you to correctly maneuver him. You play as any of a variety of pint-sized action figures, and the courses are comprised of household debris. Each track is filled with barriers, jumps, tunnels and other hazards that will both slow you down and make it harder for you to gather items like coins. Completing a course with a 100 percent rating almost always requires perfection, so memorizing the path is usually a good strategy. The app is called Joe Danger, but you can play several different characters and try out many vehicles. You can unlock these options by purchasing them using in-game currency, but oftentimes you'll find your coin count doesn't even come close to covering the bill. At this point, you can choose to either move forward with your current characters and vehicles -- which will usually mean replaying old tracks to farm more coinage -- or buy more coins using your real-life wallet. Collecting bonus items like Gumball tokens can give you a bit of a progression boost, either by providing a one-time coin reward or unlocking characters outright, but I still found several instances where I didn't have the character or vehicle needed to take on a race, despite having bested nearly all the previous challenges. The tracks are varied enough that you're not likely to get bored, unless you end up having to generate coins by replaying them ad nauseam. This won't happen often, and it'll never happen if you're willing to bow to the in-app purchase system, but for a game that costs US$2.99 out of the gate, it would have been nice to be able to play through the first dozen levels (there are more than 100 in total) without being prompted to consider shelling out even more cash. In the end, Joe Danger Infinity is a ton of fun, and that's the most important thing. Balancing in-app purchases with in-game progression is a delicate affair, and developer Hello Games seems to have leaned a bit too far in one direction, but it's nothing that should keep you from at least giving the game a spin.

Hello Games is "slotted" to ride Joe Danger Infinity onto iOS this Thursday, January 9, despite having to deal with severe floods last month. In an email sent to Joystiq, Managing Director Sean Murray wrote, "We're here in a cramped little upstairs room, with makeshift PCs and water slowly rising to the electrics... because we have a game to release!" If it makes the date, Infinity will arrive one year after the studio's first iOS game, Joe Danger Touch. As the name suggests, the studio's second one takes Danger's tried-and-tested tricking and transplants it onto an endless runner. According to Murray, the 20 or so new vehicles are the "really big change," with a tank and a firework among the new inclusions. No word on the price yet, but Joe Danger Touch landed with a $3 tag.

  • Joe Danger Infinity taps into toy-based nostalgia for iOS 'really soon'

Joe Danger Infinity is an endless racer and motorbike stunt-er coming to iOS "really soon," developer Hello Games says. Infinity is the first Joe Danger made just for iOS. After launching Joe Danger Touch, Hello Games felt it had "unfinished business" in the handheld space, studio founder Sean Murray says. Infinity features Joe Danger as a tiny, gumball machine toy that comes alive when popped open, and he races across bedroom floors, through family dinners and over a variety of relatively giant objects. It features endless gameplay, two dozen playable characters pulled from childhood nostalgia, a fresh emphasis on competition, and 20 new vehicles – including a tank, airplanes and a runaway firework. In related Hello Games news, Joe Danger and Joe Danger 2: The Movie are on their way to Vita from UK developer Four Door Lemon. Joe Danger is expected to hit Vita in Q2 2014. In even more related Hello Games news, the studio is currently working on No Man's Sky, the stylish sci-fi exploration game introduced during this month's VGX awards. If we could remember just one thing from VGX, it would probably be No Man's Sky. If only that's how memories worked.
