The movies and books we'd give as gifts

"Stick to tech," you might be thinking right now. Well, in a way, we are. No, we're not pop culture critics, and hardcover books aren't gadgets. But our gift guide wouldn't be complete without some DVD (OK, fine, Blu-ray) recs, and what is our taste if not nerdy? Because we're Engadget, and covering tech is what we do, we curated a list of books and movies that fall squarely in the sci-fi, gaming, nerd-culture and dystopia buckets. Or, in the case of nonfiction books like Super Pumped, we included media that chronicles and interrogates the tech industry -- for better and worse. Looking for something not too expensive with a bit more warmth than, we don't know, a battery pack? A book or movie relevant to your geeky friend's interests could be just the thing.

You no longer have to wonder how Jordan Peele would handle a reboot of The Twilight Zone. CBS All Access has shared the first trailer for the streaming series, and it appears to be what you'd hope for from the Get Out director: a more disturbing take on the classic show's familiar themes. There are unsettling coincidences, non-existent memories, and even disruptions of the 'natural' order of the universe. You also get peeks at some of the cast members, including Peele himself as well as Greg Kinnear, John Cho and Kumail Nanjiani.

Prolific filmmaker Jordan Peele is reuniting with Key and Peele writer Charlie Sanders on a new YouTube sci-fi series dubbed Weird City -- the first trailer for which just landed. Described as "a satirical anthology set in the not-too-distant future metropolis of Weird," the show depicts a world split between literal class lines, separating the rich and the poor. As for the middle class, they've vanished.

Amazon revisits Lorena Bobbitt’s trial in new ‘Lorena’ trailer

Last year, Amazon greenlit a Jordan Peele-produced documentary series on Lorena Bobbitt, and now it has released a trailer for the upcoming four-part series. Bobbitt made headlines in 1993 when she cut off her husband's penis, and the resulting sensationalistic media coverage obscured her side of the story as well as any meaningful conversation about domestic abuse and sexual assault. Lorena takes a look at Bobbitt's trial, how it was covered and discussed, and gives Bobbitt a chance to talk about what happened and how it affected her life. "I didn't choose to be in the spotlight," Bobbitt says in the trailer. "But there's no going back."

Amazon has signed a deal with Jordan Peele, the New York Times reports, that, going forward, will give the company a first look at any new TV series coming out of Peele's Monkeypaw Productions company. The move extends an ongoing relationship between the two companies as Amazon has already ordered two series from Peele and Monkeypaw. Last month, Amazon snagged the rights to The Hunt -- a drama about a group of people who decide to hunt down hundreds of Nazi officials planning a Fourth Reich in the US. And in April, it bought a Monkeypaw-produced documentary series about Lorena Bobbitt.

Amazon has given the go-ahead to a four-part documentary series on Lorena Bobbitt, Variety reports. Bobbitt became a media focus in 1993 when she cut off her husband's penis while he slept -- which she later said she did because he had raped her. The series will focus on her side of the story as well as the sensationalized news coverage of the case and domestic and sexual assault in the US. "When we hear the name Bobbitt we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle," Jordan Peele, who will produce the series, said in a statement. "With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse and her demand for justice. This is Lorena's story and we're honored to help her tell it."

We've got some good news for Key and Peele fans. Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele are reuniting and will be voicing the leads of Netflix's upcoming stop-motion animated film Wendell and Wild. While it's not a Key and Peele revival, it does sound like a pretty interesting project. The movie is based on an original story from Henry Selick, who directed the stop-motion films Coraline, James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Selick is also directing Wendell and Wild and will be writing the script alongside Peele and Clay McLeod Chapman.
