Steam's latest promotion features games starring moon-eyed protagonists, adorable demons and melodramatic reactions to everything. In short, it's the Steam Anime Weekend Sale. Highlights include both the gorgeous 2D fighter King of Fighters 13 and fantasy shopkeeping sim Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale at 75 percent off, retro roleplaying compilation Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles+ at 66 percent off and the recent Strider redux at half price. If none of those games scratch your itch for Japan's unique brand of weirdness, you could try romancing birds in Hatoful Boyfriend, a pigeon dating sim that's now 40 percent off. A full list of the games on sale can be found on the promotion's Steam page. The Steam Anime Weekend Sale ends Monday, January 12 at 10AM PST. [Image: SNK Playmore]

  • EVO 2014 line-up announced, Super Smash Bros. Melee being discussed

Ultra Street Fighter 4 is one of six confirmed games for this year's Evolution Championship Series, but Super Smash Bros. Melee is a doubt. Event organizer Shoryuken revealed it's in "preliminary discussions" with Nintendo about featuring the GameCube brawler in the fighting game tournament, following the stir its inclusion caused last year. Melee was the eighth game to be included in last year's line-up, after it won a fan vote that raised $225,724 for breast cancer research. However, a few months after Nintendo moved to claim revenue on Let's Play videos featuring its games, the company requested Melee be removed from the EVO 2013 streaming line-up. The move was received with an immediate backlash, and Nintendo swiftly reversed its decision. The circumstances are different this time-around. For one, Melee is just another potential game in the line-up, not one voted for by fans with charity money behind it. Still, it'll be interesting to see which way Nintendo swings on approval this time, especially in the same year that a new Super Smash Bros. game is set to arrive on Wii U and 3DS. As for the rest, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, and Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma join Ultra Street Fighter 4 as newbies to the championships, while King of Fighters 13 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 return from last year's selection. The event itself takes place on July 11-13 at the LVH Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, but if you can't make it to Nevada you can always tune in on Twitch. [Image: Shoryuken]

Steam Edition will run you $30 and includes upgraded Story, Training and Online modes, as well as new graphical options for ensuring smooth performance. Those who want to jump into the action early can apply to be a Steam Edition beta tester now, and SNK Playmore will pick 300 players in a lottery drawing on August 19. The Steam Edition features online, tutorial and story modes upgraded from the console version, and includes three DLC characters – "Iori with the Power of Flames," "NESTS Style Kyo" and "Mr. Karate" – available right from the start. King of Fighters XIII looks very likely to be on its way to Steam, after a new trailer was found in the portal's database. The vid, currently viewable on Steam, ends with a logo detailing a 'Steam Edition' of the SNK fighter. KoF XIII was first discovered on Steam's database in February along with several other games like Dyad and Fez, some of which have now released on the service. Entries for KoF 2002: Unlimited Match and KoF 1998: Ultimate Match were also unearthed back then, but the KoF XIII trailer provides solid indication that particular game is headed to Steam in the near future. No official announcement has been made. SNK Playmore's latest entry in its almost 20-year-old fighter series arrived in Japan's arcades in 2010 before coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 a year later. Joystiq's resident King of Fighters, Jordan Mallory, doled out four stars in his review, deeming it "hands down the best, most polished and solidly constructed King of Fighters game there's ever been." Update: The trailer has since been removed from Steam. You can view a copy uploaded to YouTube (via Shoryuken) here.

When it's time for the year's Evolution Championship Series fighting game selections to be announced, normally the process shakes out like this: A post goes up on Shoryuken, the fighting game community cheers and/or jeers for a while, and then everyone gets back to practicing. This year, however, things are a bit different.Seven games have been announced as official selections, as per usual: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter X Tekken (ver. 2013), King of Fighters XIII and Persona 4 Arena. The eighth game shakes up some paradigms, being selected through an ongoing charity fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.Basically, players donate money to the BCRF in the name of whichever game they want to see in the final slot, be it Dead or Alive 5, Darkstalkers 3, Capcom vs. SNK 2, or any of the 13 other eligible titles. Whichever game's community raises the most money for charity before the end of this month will be selected as the final, official EVO 2013 selection.Donation links can be found here, so if you want to forcefully subject people to a global MLP: Fighting Is Magic tournament, you can do so for a good cause.

Another EVO Championship Series has come and gone, taking with it the hopes, dreams and aspirations of a community. EVO is the Super Bowl of fighting games, but also a cultural mecca for those who share the genre as their life's passion. This year's proceedings were punctuated by surprises, upsets and incredible displays of skill and technical prowess, perhaps more so than any EVO in recent memory. Last year's Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition champion, Fuudo, tied with three others for ninth place at this year's tournament, for instance. Conversely, Perfect Legend successfully defended his throne as Mortal Kombat champion, becoming the first person to retain their title since Daigo Umehara's SSF4 victory in 2010.Head on past the break for results of the seven major tournaments that took place over the weekend, along with videos of the Grand Finals for each game, courtesy of IGN. If you're pressed for time, allow us to make some recommendations: Watch the first rounds of the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and SSF4:AE Ver. 2012 Grand Finals for two of the most exciting KOs of the weekend, and peep the King of Fighters XIII Grand Finals for the most excitable stream commentators in the entire world.

Catherine I have a soft spot for the bizarre and the esoteric. If something is complicated, either through the machinations of its mechanical workings or through the intricacies of its conceptual nature, its hard for me to focus on anything else until I feel like I really understand what I'm looking at. Catherine gave me something to think about, and also made me think about myself, which isn't something I can usually say about puzzle/dating games. The experience is complicated in both the literal and metaphorical sense; its ever-changing puzzle gameplay and surprisingly deep, multifaceted story are the result of brilliant design decisions, exceptional writing and an amazing localization job by Atlus. Catherine managed to satiate my craving for the intellectually surreal while immersing me in the delightfully idiosyncratic world of Japanese storytelling.

  • KOF XIII 'NESTS Kyo' DLC delayed on PS3, netcode patch on the way

Originally slated for a simultaneous 360 and PS3 release on December 20, King of Fighters XIII's upcoming "NESTS Kyo" character DLC pack has been delayed for PS3 fighters until January 10. A fantastically vague "technical error" is to blame for the issue, according to the Atlus press release after the break. In order to make it up to you, SNK Playmore will be lowering the character's cost to $2.99 for a limited time once it lands. In somewhat sunnier KoFXIII news, Atlus is also planning a substantial netcode patch for both versions of the game which is said to "make the game's network infrastructure more consistent for users, ensuring that the evaluation given connections is more accurate to the actual play experience." The patch will also introduce minimum signal strength requirement settings on the host side of matchmaking, so players will be able to prevent users with poor connections from joining their open match. SNK Playmore plans on releasing the patch "as soon as possible." Oh, and if you're wondering what the hell "NESTS" means, read this.

With all the Street Fighters, Marvel vs. Capcoms and Mortal Kombats floating around these days, it might be hard to decide if your tough, battle-hardened heart has room for one more fighter. To make this decision a little easier, SNK has released a demo of its latest, King of Fighters XIII, on Xbox Live. The trial will also rear its head on the PlayStation Network next Tuesday, December 13. There has to be something to it, right? After all, there have been thirteen of them.

  • King of Fighters XIII review: Sweep the leg

    11.24.2011

It's tough living in someone else's shadow. Your achievements may be numerous and impressive, but existing outside of the limelight can be disheartening after a while. Constantly fighting for relevance in a crowded genre is a consuming, arduous fight; one that SNK Playmore has waged ever since Fatal Fury: King of Fighters went toe to toe with Street Fighter II in 1991. The result of that fight may be contentious in the mind of the fighting game community, but Joe Public and his Mortal Kombat Blu-ray feel otherwise; while series like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat invaded American pop-culture and became household names, King of Fighters continued to toil away in obscurity, releasing game after game for its dedicated cult following. Things are different now, though. Street Fighter IV kick-started a renaissance in fighting games, reigniting the mainstream consumer's interest in the genre, which paved the way for impossibilities like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and the incredibly successful rebirth of Mortal Kombat. In this new age of fighters, could it finally be SNK Playmore's time to shine? Will their latest entry, King of Fighters XIII, capture the minds and hearts of those unfamiliar with series? Probably not. SNK Playmore remains so unplugged from what is happening in the rest of the genre that its latest excursion feels like an old friend, rather than a revolution. Because of this, however, King of Fighters XIII is the best KOF game ever made, despite the fact that it isn't as flashy or user friendly as its contemporaries.%Gallery-126135%

For those of you concerned with the actual game bundled with the King of Soundtracks, SNK producer Kei Yamamoto promises better netcode in King of Fighters XIII. "In order to improve the online performance, our netcode received a complete overhaul," Yamamoto told PlayStation Blog."We reexamined the threshold level, optimized the content of the transmitted data, and changed the way the game handled increased net traffic, among other things." He also responded noncommittally but positively to the idea of a King of Fighters game on the PlayStation Vita. "The PlayStation Vita controls well," Yamamoto said, "the titles being released are appealing, and user impressions are good, so I am very interested in it, not just as a developer but as a user as well. Personally, I'd love to work on a KOF title for PS Vita if the opportunity arises." It would go great with that tiny arcade stick we couldn't be wishing harder for.
