Hyundai has unveiled its second-generation Kona, and the EV model promises more room and a long 304-mile range.
Hyundai will offer free self-driving rides in Irvine, California
A handful of Californians are about to experience self-driving cars first-hand. Hyundai, Via and (appropriately enough) Pony.ai are debuting a driverless ride hailing BotRide service in Irvine on November 4th. A group of "several hundred" residents, including college students, will have free access to autonomous Kona Electric SUVs that will take them between multiple points of interest, using Via's algorithms to optimize the number of passengers without making them walk too far at either end of the trip. Pony.ai will supply the sensor hardware and software to help navigate city streets.

The gas-powered Hyundai Kona is a great little crossover. It's inexpensive, it's fun to drive, it's got distinctive styling and it has room for you, your friends and some of their stuff. Then Hyundai went and made an EV version of the tiny SUV and it's a better vehicle in almost every way. But, more important, it's the electric car that a lot of folks have been waiting for.
Hyundai Kona EV could cost you less than $30,000
Turns out Hyundai's Kona EV is one of the most affordable electric vehicles you'll be able to buy in the near future. The automaker has revealed that the electric version of its Kona model has a starting price of $36,450 before federal tax incentives. If you can get the $7,500 maximum tax incentive, the crossover will only set you back $29,995 -- that's $28,950 in base price plus delivery. The Kona EV, Hyundai's first electric crossover for the US market, will be manufactured in Korea and will start shipping in California in early 2019. It will eventually make its way to western and northeastern states part of the zero emission vehicle program, though the automaker didn't announce a concrete timeline for them.

Hyundai likely isn't the first automaker that springs to mind when talking about electric vehicles, but maybe it should be. While industry stalwarts like Ford and startups like Tesla dominate the conversation around the future of the EV market, Hyundai is out here quietly developing a a crossover SUV that can travel farther on a single charge -- 258 miles, to be precise -- than any other electric vehicle on the market (that isn't presently built by Elon Musk).

Hyundai’s Kona is ready for almost anything
Imagine you're going out for the night with friends. You have the perfect jeans. You just picked up a great shirt or blouse. You're having a great hair day, your sock game is on point. Hell, you even picked up a new smartphone earlier in the day. You look great and step out on the town. Except you're missing a shoe. That's the new Hyundai Kona crossover (starting at $19,500). The great-looking person who's ready to take on the world and is so much fun to be around you don't even notice the missing shoe until way into the night. Sure, it's confusing at first, but you get over it. You're a having a good time, why spoil it? I really enjoyed driving the Kona even though its "missing shoe" continues to be a head-scratcher. (Don't worry, we'll get to what the "shoe" is soon enough).

Hyundai's Kona Electric SUV boasts a 292-mile range
Hyundai's newly bolstered EV strategy might be off to a good start. It just unveiled the Kona Electric, an adaptation of its crossover SUV that promises to combine both ample space with meaningful performance. The base edition's 186-mile range and 9.3-second 0-62MPH time won't raise eyebrows, but a long-range version can muster a 292-mile range and reach 62MPH in 7.6 seconds. That's about as much range as a top-spec Tesla Model X -- if you don't need blistering acceleration or gobs of seating, you can get a very capable electric people hauler.
