  • Xbox 360 wireless mic sold separately this fall for $50

We're having a hard time wrapping our heads around this one, so do us a favor and bear with us while we put our heads down and power through. Microsoft is releasing a wireless microphone this fall meant to be used with "your favorite Xbox 360 music games," a list that includes: Lips, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Rock Band 2, Disney Sing It: High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Lips: Number One Hits, and The Beatles: Rock Band.We know, we know -- you're asking yourself, "Why would Microsoft release more peripherals? Just to add extra confusion to the Joystiq instrument compatibility matrix?" According to Microsoft, the mics are meant to assist in your living room rockstar efforts, and will retail this fall for an "estimated retail price" of $50. Meanwhile, the promise of Lips mics working in Rock Band 2 has yet to arrive and an asterisk in Microsoft's press release from earlier today indicates that these new mics won't work either without a title update. Does that mean we'll finally see the allowance of Lips' mics in RB2 when these new mics ship in the fall?

  • Lips: Number One Hits shouts its way to retail this October

Microsoft has made a very odd announcement today, revealing a new Lips game heading to retail. Lips: Number One Hits will be compatible with the first title and features "popular tracks spanning diverse genres and generations that have graced the No. 1 position on major global charts." Some of these new tracks are: "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay "Disturbia" by Rihanna "U Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer "More Than Words" by Extreme "Apologize" by Timbaland featuring OneRepublic "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison "Ready, Set, Go!" by Tokio Hotel We can't say we totally get this announcement. Why go through the bother of putting out another retail disc (and incurring the costs of doing so), when you can just continue releasing DLC for the first game? Regardless, fans will be able to get their hands on Lips: Number One Hits and all of its mass appeal when the game releases this October.

  • Guitar Hero: Metallica supports Lips mic, Rock Band 2 patch 'this summer'

Microsoft has issued a plea to new and future purchasers of Guitar Hero: Metallica for Xbox 360 to also please, please, PLEASE buy its Lips karaoke game -- for the microphones. Didn't you know? The metal music game features built-in support for those uh-huh-they-do-sparkle mics. Neversoft, the current Guitar Hero developer, initially confirmed this compatibility -- which isn't coming to World Tour -- on its Twitter feed last month, but the posting has since been removed. Nevertheless, Guitar Hero: Metallica is the first music game to support the much praised, wireless Lips peripheral, which has been unsuccessfully bundled with a mediocre singing game.Additionally, Microsoft has tentatively dated that long-ago-promised Rock Band 2 patch for "this summer" and suggested that additional titles supporting its mic will be available later this year. When, surely, we'll be able to purchase a standalone Lips mic. Pretty please?

  • Lips getting complete overhaul with title update

Microsoft has announced a number of changes coming to your living room Lips performance, just in case the latest batch of content wasn't enough to make you press your mouth to the game's sparkly mics. The coming title update includes several fixes and "highly-requested" features, such as leaderboards and a much-needed option for microphone calibration. Also on the way is a "significant change" to Lips' scoring system, promising an overhaul of how the game detects changes in pitch and vibrato. After the update, Microsoft notes that players will no longer be able to simply blow into the mic or mumble their way through tunes and still hope to reap galactic rewards. No exact release date has been announced, though we expect the change to drop on stage sooner rather than later, and have already begun massaging our vocal chords for our next off-tune performance.[Thanks, Ofri]

  • Guitar Hero World Tour won't receive Lips mic support

According to VG247, Activision has no plans to add Lips wireless microphone support to Guitar Hero World Tour. Now, we could understand their unwillingness to support the Lips mics if they were poorly constructed or if it'd be some overwhelming task to take on. But the one thing (and possibly only thing) Lips has going for it are stellar peripherals and we don't believe releasing a game patch would be all that time consuming.Shame on you World Tour. At least Rock Band recognizes the value of colorfully lit mics.

Here's a protip for you, guy or gal who's putting together the Lips DLC offerings. Let's say you look at your list for that Wednesday, and let's say you see something like this: Olivia Newton John – "Magic" (160/$2) Avril Lavigne – "My Happy Ending" (160/$2) The Pussycat Dolls featuring Snoop Dogg – "Buttons" (160/$2) If you look at your list and you realize that the one who starred in Xanadu is the one classing things up, maybe it's time to take a long, hard look in the mirror and figure out where things went wrong.

This weekend's Grammy Awards will send us looking for something -- anything -- else to watch on television. Even so, Microsoft has offered up its latest batch of downloadable tunes for Lips so living room crooners can celebrate the occasion. Arriving tomorrow, February 6, the lineup includes three previous Grammy winners, including "Fallin'" by Alicia Keys, Coldplay's "In My Place" and "Building a Mystery" from Sarah McLachlan. Microsoft also points out that a pair of already available tracks, namely Coldplay's "Violet Hill" and Adele's "Chasing Pavements," are up for awards during the event, though all things considered we'll probably spend the evening watching reruns of MacGyver instead.
