  • Black Ops 2 topples Halo 4 on Xbox Live

Even after saving the entire galaxy (twice!), Master Chief just can't stay on top. After briefly dethroning Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox Live during its launch week, Halo 4 is now the second most played game behind Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, according to Major Nelson. It's not too surprising, given the traditional Xbox Live dominance of Activision's annual shooter.Perhaps more interesting is seeing Hitman: Absolution (appropriately) sneak into the top 20, assassinate Halo 3 and take over its spot at number 19. Meanwhile, Minecraft looms in third place, waiting to reclaim its former glory once again.

Now that the new year is in full swing, Microsoft has decided to take a look back at the top games of 2009. Specifically, Major Nelson has released a breakdown of the most popular games on Xbox Live during 2009. The overall top twenty list seems pretty standard with Halo 3 at the top, followed by Call of Duty 4. What's amazing, though, is that after releasing in November, Modern Warfare 2 managed to snag third place for the entire year. So, pretty popular game, then. On the downloadable front, Battlefield 1943 takes top XBLA honors, followed by Castle Crashers and Trials HD. Indie Games are topped by I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1N IT!!!1 (it is just a dollar), followed by Avatar Drop and RC-AirSim. Unsurprisingly, the top original Xbox game is still Halo 2, while Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and the original Fable take second and third place, respectively. Head over to Major Nelson for the full list.

And the mighty Xbox Live tug-of-war continues this week as Major Nelson reports that Halo 3 has once again wrangled the top spot from Call of Duty: World at War. We'd like to say there were some other -- more interesting -- changes this week, but the rest of the list remains almost completely unchanged. The only other difference is that Fallout 3 replaced Prototype at ninth place, knocking the latter to tenth.Don't worry, though, we've got a new Halo game and a new Call of Duty game on the way in just a few months. Then we can at least see different iterations of the same series occupying the top two slots. That's something to look forward to, right?[Image: Pwn or Die]

Folks can't get enough of those Mythic maps, as Halo 3 frags its way to the top of the Xbox Live charts for another week. The siren's song of plasma grenades and billion-dollar cyborgs bested the Nazi zombie-killing antics of Halo nemesis, Call of Duty: World at War. On the Xbox Live Arcade side, the first and second placeholders from last week have switched, with Hasbro Family Game Night taking the top spot on the charts, and OutRun Online Arcade moving down to the second spot. For the full rundown, hit up Major Nelson's stats.

Another week passes and the epic struggle between Call of Duty: World at War and Halo 3 continues. For a second week in a row Halo 3 netted the top slot as the most played Xbox 360 game on Xbox Live -- probably due in part to the public availability of the Mythic Map Pack, released on April 9. On the top played Xbox Live Arcade list OutRun Online Arcade grabbed the top spot while last week's number one, The Dishwasher, dropped to fourth. In a show of gamers voting with their dollars, the 1600 ($20) XBLA release Puzzle Quest: Galactrix plummeted from fifth spot to tenth while Capcom's Flock! has failed to make a splash on the top ten. "What will knock Halo 3 from the top slot?" you ask. Halo OutRun Arcade... pictured above and coming soon (but, not really). The full top ten lists are available after the break.

Major Nelson has posted the latest Xbox Live activity and it looks like the constant tug of war has shifted away from Halo 3 and back to Call of Duty: World at War. The World War II shooter is once again at the top of the charts, followed by Halo 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Meanwhile, whilst the big contenders are distracted, Resident Evil 5 has crept up to fourth place, much like its Majini antagonists. It appears that Gears of War 2 and GTAIV are the first victims of RE5's upward march, with the titles falling to fifth and sixth place, respectively. Halo Wars keeps seventh place, FIFA 09 moves up to eighth, pushing Left 4 Dead to ninth. Street Fighter IV drops from the top ten entirely thanks to the return of Guitar Hero World Tour, which grabs spot number ten.Given that Resident Evil 5 debuted on a Friday, it's not surprising that it's managed to gain a few spots now that it's had a full week of exposure. The question is whether Resident Evil 5, with its comparatively limited online offerings, will maintain is position on the charts.

Major Nelson has posted Xbox Live activity for the week of March 9. Not much has changed from last week, with Halo 3 still occupying the top spot closely followed by both Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 4. Rounding out the top five are Gears of War 2 and GTAIV in the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.Resident Evil 5 debuted at number six -- an impressive feat considering it released on a Friday -- pushing Halo Wars to the seventh slot. In turn, Left 4 Dead dropped from seven to eight, followed by FIFA 09 and Street Fighter IV at nine and ten. With versus DLC headed to Resident Evil 5, it will be interesting to watch its Live performance in the coming weeks.Peggle, unsurprisingly, was the most purchased Xbox Live Arcade game of the week. You should try it. It's harmless, we promise.

Our very personal bestest friend, Major Nelson, has posted Xbox Live activity for the week of March 2nd. Halo continues its never-ending battle with Call of Duty with Halo 3 nudging World at War from the top spot. Call of Duty 4, Gears of War 2 (somehow) and GTAIV round out the top five. The Halo series receives some backup this week, with newcomer Halo Wars debuting at number six. On top of that, the Halo Wars demo inched up the top ten, moving from the ninth most played to the eighth. FIFA 09 moves up a notch to number 9, shoving Street Fighter IV to the tenth spot.Considering the limited edition of Halo Wars including the Mythic Map Pack, it might have had something to do with Halo 3 reclaiming the top spot. The big question now is whether or not Halo Wars can maintain its momentum. As one of the few RTS games to make a big splash on consoles, you can bet Microsoft is watching it closely.

  • GTAIV carjacks top spot on Xbox Live

Well that didn't take long. Major Nelson has posted the most recent Xbox Live activity top ten. As predicted, Grand Theft Auto IV has (appropriately) stolen the top spot from Call of Duty 4. It would be interesting to find out the percentage of players playing multiplayer versus those that are sticking to the single-player campaign. Regardless, given the amount of content there is to discover in GTAIV, it's likely that it will remain at number one for quite some time. The question now is what game has the power to knock it down. The only thing that comes to mind is (Game of the Year 2008) Ninja Gaiden II. As much as we know Ryu could probably take Niko one-on-one, we're not sure his game has the strength to topple GTAIV.[Thanks, marklar]

Another week goes by and another Live Top Ten is upon us. This week sees some things that don't change, the return of a few old faces, and other movements. The top four remain the same, with Shadowrun also remaining at tenth, though its demo dropped to 9th, which is unfortunate. Oblivion and GRAW 2 make returns at sixth and seventh respectively, as it looks like players are coming back to those in the summer lull. Full list breakdown after the break.

This week's Live Top Ten let the dust settle from last week's onslaught of demos. The top three remained unchanged, with Guitar Hero II moving into fourth, pushing the Shadowrun demo down. One of the other demos from last week, Tenchu Z remains in the same spot, and the Arcade game, Prince of Persia actually moved up to eighth. Also, though its demo has been on the list for the past week, the retail version of Shadowrun has made it on the top ten list, and will hopefully continue to climb. Full breakdown of the list after the break.

This week's Live Top Ten is very similar to last week's betastic showing, with most of the titles either staying put, or moving one spot from their previous position. The top three remain the same, with Gears of War, Crackdown, and the Halo 3 Beta, with GRAW 2 rounding out the bottom, as before. The DiRT demo drops from fourth to eighth, with everything except for Call of Duty 3 moving up a spot. The Hour of Victory demo also stakes out a spot at lucky number s(l)even. Full list with last week's standings after the break.

This week's Live Top Ten shows a trend that will continue on through to the 10th. The Halo 3 Beta is being played a lot, by way of our actions Crackdown. Not enough to knock Gears of War of its top spot, but certainly enough to give the retail game second, and the beta in accesses in third. Of course, there is more on the list worth noting other than those three worth mentioning, such as the DiRT demo, or the free XBLA title, Aegis Wing. Full list can be found after the break, or you can just go back to playing the beta. We'll encourage you in your habit.

This week's Live Top Ten features the same big hitters that have been around for the past few months, but it is also sprinkled with a few demos that hit the Marketplace this past week. Both the Forza 2 and Area 51: Blacksite demos made it on the list at number two and four beating out games like Rainbow Six Vegas and Guitar Hero II. Also spurred into action was Crackdown which jumped to the number three spot probably due to its new content and the Halo 3 beta fanfare. Speaking of the Halo 3 beta, it didn't show up on the Live Top Ten list due to it being released later in the week, but you can nearly guarantee it'll be making an appearance next week. The complete top ten list is posted after the break for your viewing pleasure.

Last week saw some demolition to the Live Top Ten list with the Command and Conquer 3 demo shaking up the top three. This week, the same thing happens, but it's out of left field with Pinball FX, which incidentally was also the top downloaded Arcade title as well, popping into third, behind Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas. All of which are followed by Guitar Hero II and the C&C3 demo. Call of Duty 3 moves down to sixth, while GRAW 2 stays put, Crackdown moves up to eighth. 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures proves it has some staying power by pulling off second to last, with Oblivion rounding off the list at tenth. Full list available after the break.

Last week saw little change in the Live Top Ten, but this week had some movement in both game activity as well as making room for some newcomers. The biggest change is the Command and Conquer 3 demo showing up, aptly, in the third spot, pushing Guitar Hero II, and Call of Duty 3 down to forth and fifth, respectively. 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures also makes an appearance in 6th, followed by GRAW 2 and Oblivion, the latter of which managed to stay in the same place as last week. Crackdown takes a penultimate dip, with Pro Evolution 6 trailing in tenth. Full listing after the break.

This week's Live Top Ten is actually very similar to last week, with one minor exception. Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas, Guitar Hero II, CoD 3 and GRAW 2 all hold their previous standings in the top half with pride. Boom Boom Rocket makes an explosive appearance at the top of the bottom half, with Crackdown, Oblivion, Pro Evolution Soccer, and Madden '07 all shoving down a spot to make way for the Celebration of Light that is BBR. Full list available after the break, although with such a simple change from last week, you almost don't need to. Almost.

While we didn't have a Live Top Ten to correspond with its return last week, we got one fired up for you this week. Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas maintain their top two spots, with Guitar Hero II squeaking into third, pushing Call of Duty 3, GRAW 2, Crackdown and Oblivion all down a slot to make room for the RAWK. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 moves up from tenth to eighth, with Madden NFL 07 and Saints Row each making a return to the list in ninth and tenth, respectively. This week on Xbox Live we see half of the titles holding last week's position, with Gears of War, Crackdown, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Call of Duty 3, and Oblivion keeping their respective first, second, third, fourth and ninth place in the list. We also get treated to having two Xbox Live Arcade titles make it into the mix, with Alien Hominid HD rounding out the top half, and Worms taking in the number seven spot. GRAW 2's multiplayer demo stakes placement between the Arcade arrivals, with Madden NFL 07 and Lost Planet both moving down two spots from last week's standings to finish off the ranking. As per our tradition, we have a list for you with the previous placement in parentheses after the break.

Last week, Crackdown came on strong with bronze position on the Live top ten. Now it's swapped spots with Rainbow Six: Vegas as Call of Duty 3 continues to be just shy of the podium. GRAW 2's mulitplayer demo makes a return to take the Crackdown demo's position, which moved to 7th. Madden refuses to budge at sixth while Lost Planet and Oblivion get nudged to eighth and ninth, respectively. GRAW rounds out the bottom of the list while last, and obviously not least, Gears of War retains its top spot over all of Xbox Live-dom. Do you feel slightly confused? If so, our simple, yet eloquent list awaits your review after the break, complete with last weeks standings in parentheses.
