  • WSJ: Facebook working on dedicated camera and live video app

Does Facebook have a sharing problem? If it does, the social network is considering ways to increase the amount of stuff you post, especially pictures and videos. The Wall Street Journal reports that Mark Zuckerberg & Co. are working on a standalone camera app with the aim of helping you create and share more content. WSJ's sources indicate that app has two prominent features: still photos and the ability to broadcast live video footage quickly. With the popularity of sharing via Snapchat, and Facebook's on-going push for live video, it's easy to see why the company would take a stab at a new app.

NAB 2014 wouldn't be the same without Livestream, one of the internet's most popular broadcasting services, introducing new hardware or software. As such, Livestream has just announced another way for users to share video on its site: an application for Google Glass. Obviously, Livestream isn't the first to bring this feature to the wearable set, since you can already use the search giant's own Hangouts app to broadcast what you're seeing.

Today on TUAW TV Live we'll be talking about the newest version of the Mac's operating system -- OS X Mavericks. It's getting closer to release, with Apple asking developers to submit their apps with new Mavericks-enhanced capabilities for inclusion in the Mac App Store. So what's the big deal about Mavericks, and is it a necessary update? Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will be discussing the new features of Mavericks today, and debating the merits (and timing) of updating. Just yesterday, word leaked out that Apple would be holding an event on October 22 at which it is expected that the company will debut the latest models of the iPad and iPad mini. The Mac Pro and Mavericks may receive passing notice as well, but the two new tablets will most likely be the focus of the event. Today on TUAW TV Live, Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will talk about what features we'd like to see in the next-generation iPads. We'll also have the regular parade of new products and talk about our favorite apps that have arrived during the past week, so it should be a fun hour of discussion, chat and verbal abuse. Sheeeesh. It's obviously August here in Colorado, with temperatures in the 90s (°F) and no relief in site. It's also hot in Doc's part of the world, with a high of 88°F expected today. So the two of us might be a bit sweaty today when we light up the studio lights and entertain you for an hour on TUAW TV Live. As usual we'll have some new products to talk about -- both hardware and software -- and we'll have our eyes on the chat room to see what the audience would like to talk about. To join in to watch the live feed and participate in the chat, just click here or click that image you see at the top of this post. You'll join us on the AOL On Network. Steve: "Let's see ... Apple's got something coming up next week... Oh, yeah -- it's WorldWide Developer Conference week! Hey, Doc, why don't we do something really original, like a WWDC preview show!" Doc: "Sure, Steve! What an original idea! Nobody has probably ever thought of that in the history of Apple podcasts!" Noooo, we didn't have that conversation, but we probably could have. So we're going to talk a bit about what to expect or not expect at WWDC, look at photos sent by readers who were walking past Moscone West today, even reminisce about WWDC events and keynotes past. You can watch it all in live streaming video here, as well as join in on the Chatroll fun. If you miss the show, it'll be embedded in this post within 24 hours and will also be on our YouTube channel.

I don't know about you, but after watching / listening / suffering through all 81 minutes of Tim Cook's AllThingsD D11 talk with hosts Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, I feel like I had a hangover. Unsurprisingly, Cook didn't open the kimono to reveal secret new products that are waiting in the wings, and the hosts and audience seemed to take delight in pointing out the parade of new devices or technologies announced by Google and other competitors. Today on TUAW TV Live, my co-host Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will talk about the usual -- new products, fun stuff that's come out this week -- and then rehash the D11 frat party. To join us, just click this link to jump over to http://tuaw.com/tuawtvlive, where you'll find our HD livestream and chat tool. Today on TUAW TV Live, cohost Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will be conversing about a number of topics. Yesterday saw Apple CEO Tim Cook being grilled by a Senate committee about corporate taxes and at the same time passing along a hint that a "refreshed Mac line" will be manufactured in the Great State of Texas, so both of those are worthy of banter. There are also some new products that have made it to the TUAW Labs in recent days, so we'll have some quick unboxings for your viewing pleasure. Great. Now I have that "Lions and Tigers and Bears..." meme running through my head. Well, fortunately that will disappear in a few minutes when TUAW TV Live starts up with another week of chat and discussion of the news. So what's all this about printers? Well, after 10 years of faithful service, my old HP printer finally turned over and died, so I ended up getting a new printer. That got me thinking about how amazing these things are now, and how they're really nothing more than a cheap come-on to sell expensive printer cartridges. Below, you'll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. You'll be watching the show in glorious HD! You can also join in on the chat by pointing your favorite IRC client towards server chat1.ustream.tv, chat room #tuaw-tv. If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! However, if someone else is doing the driving, you can watch the show on your iPhone and join the chat by downloading the free Ustream App. It's a universal app and is wonderful on an iPad, both for viewing and participating in the chat. In addition, the live stream and chat will be available through our Facebook page. Just point your browser here to watch the show and chat with other viewers while you're on Facebook. We'll start at about 5 PM ET, so if you're seeing a prerecorded show, be sure to refresh your browser until you see the live stream. Just a reminder that like every Wednesday, TUAW TV Live will be "on the air" this afternoon from the beautiful TUAW studios in snowy Highlands Ranch, Colo. I'll be talking about some possible changes to the show that may be coming in the near future, griping about printers and Fitbit syncing and whatever else happens to come to mind. Like AAPL shares going in the tank today, for instance... As usual, I'll be starting the show at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT / 10 PM BST) sharp, and we'll take a few minutes to chat before the demos start. To join in on the chat and watch the live streaming video, drop by TUAW about five minutes before the start time to get your instructions on how to participate. If you're unable to join us for the show, remember that you can always subscribe to the video podcast and watch the show at your leisure in iTunes or any other favorite podcatching app. The past shows are also available on the TUAW YouTube channel. 04.10.2013

Today on TUAW TV Live, the topic is tools and toys. For bloggers, the most popular tools are text editors, and I'll have a live demo of Ulysses III on the show today. Megan Lavey-Heaton wrote up a nice review of this text editor from The Soulmen a few days ago, and I was impressed enough by what she said that I ended up buying Ulysses III and its iOS counterpart Daedalus. The two can be linked via iCloud or Dropbox, and I'm finding both to be useful in my everyday work. As for the toys, we always have a parade of stuff going through the TUAW Labs at any time, so today's show will most likely feature some items to praise or make fun of. I'm not sure if my normal cohort Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd will be joining me for the show today, but if he is, I'm sure he'll have a variety of awe-inspiring new goodies to tell us about. Below, you'll find a Ustream livestream viewer and a chat tool. The chat tool allows you to participate by asking questions or making comments. You'll be watching the show in glorious HD! If you're driving somewhere and would like to watch TUAW TV Live while you're stuck in traffic, please don't -- keep your eyes on the road! Wednesdays are notable for two things: being "hump day" and TUAW TV Live. Every Wednesday I get together with one of my colleagues or a guest, and we proceed to chat about everything that's happened or is rumored to be coming up in the Apple world. That's if we're able to squash the somewhat inevitable technical bugs that seem to pop up when trying to stream HD video, keep IRC chat windows open and do a video chat at the same time... Anyway, we'll be on the air again today at 5 PM ET, and if you've never watched TUAW TV Live or it's been a while since you joined in, take a break and watch today's show. As usual, I'll be starting the show at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT / 10 PM BST) sharp, and we'll take a few minutes to chat before the demos start. It's officially springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, so I'm starting to go out into the garden to admire the first flowers of spring. For Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd, it's always springtime in Hawaii. Today we're going to get together -- virtually -- and co-host TUAW TV Live, although weather probably won't be a topic of discussion. I'm back from a week of fun in the sun, and that means that since it's Wednesday, I'll be back in the captain's chair for TUAW TV Live. Last week, Doc was at the helm, steering the SS TUAW TV away from the rocky shoals of technical issues and into the calm waters of Mac tools and tips. While I was away, it appears that a cargo ship dropped off a hefty load of new Apple accessories to look at, so I'll be discussing some of those goodies along with chatting about anything that happens to come up. • ABC has live-streaming mobile app in the works

    03.19.2013

The New York Times is reporting that ABC is working on an app to stream live ABC programming to the iPhones and iPads of cable and satellite TV subscribers. ABC, which is a subsidiary of Disney, would become the first American broadcaster to provide a live internet stream of both national and local programming. By providing the stream only to those who already pay for cable or satellite TV, the Times notes that ABC "preserves the cable business model that is crucial to the bottom lines of broadcasters, while giving subscribers more of what they seem to want -- mobile access to TV shows." This isn't the first time that ABC has taken a giant step away from the home TV -- the network was the first to sell TV episodes through iTunes and pioneered streaming free episodes of shows on its website. Parent company Disney has live-streaming and on-demand apps for ESPN and the Disney Channel, but there are some legal barriers to overcome for the ABC app. Many of the contracts signed between ABC and production companies were put into place before mobile video streaming became possible, and local ABC stations might feel threatened by an app. There's no word on exactly when the app will arrive in the App Store, but the Times believes that it may become available to some cable and satellite subscribers later in 2013.
