There's little doubt that Netflix put a lot of faith in its Lost in Space remake... thankfully, that trust has paid off. The service has renewed the adventures of the Robinson family for a second season. It's too early for a premiere date or plot details, but you can presume it'll revolve around the colonists' survival in an alien landscape and the alliances they form along the way.

Netflix's 'Lost in Space' doesn't look like the show you remember

Netflix has released the first full trailer for its Lost in Space remake, and it definitely isn't a retread of the 1960s TV show... or the 1998 movie, for that matter. While the core premise remains intact (the Robinsons have been stranded following a colonization mission gone wrong), much has changed in the past few decades. It's not just the modern special effects or the grittier (if still family friendly) tone -- the show is tinkering with important characters.

Netflix's 'Lost in Space' reboot premieres April 13th

Netflix's Lost in Space remake has been a long, long time in coming (word broke of it back in 2015), but it's finally here... almost. The streaming service has revealed that the sci-fi show will debut on April 13th, 2018, and has offered a teaser trailer to whet your appetite. Not surprisingly, this promises to be a thoroughly modern retelling of the Robinsons' wayward mission. It appears to take a more serious tone, and reflects much of what we've learned about space in the roughly 50 years since the original TV series. The family is out to colonize Alpha Centauri, for starters.

Netflix optioned Lost in Space late last November, and we finally have a few more details about when we'll see it. The classic -- and short-lived -- sci-fi reboot is currently slated for a 10 episode run and will premiere in 2018, according to Deadline's sources. The report goes on to say that the series shouldn't stray too far from original creator Irwin Allen's original: The Robinson family (neither the Classic or the Matt LeBlanc version) will find themselves, you guessed it, lost in space with them "battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons."

  • Netflix is bringing back 'Lost in Space'

Netflix is known for its quality original programming. But every now and then it can't help but pick some low-hanging fruit like rebooting a classic series. Deadline reports that the streaming service has just penned a deal to remake 1960s classic Lost in Space. Originally set in a futuristic and completely inaccurate 1997, it followed a family who tried to colonize deep space and got lost when their navigation equipment was sabotaged. The program ended after a three-season run in 1968 and since then, others have tried to reanimate the franchise. The first was a movie adaptation in 1998 starring Matt LeBlanc (which says all you need to know about its quality). Then in 2004, a reboot pilot was shot but never aired. Rumours of a third attempt surfaced around a year ago, but fizzled out before anything was made. There's been no mention of who will star in it or when it will air, but here's hoping the Lost in Space Robot doesn't flail its arms and robotically warn us: "Danger! Danger! Another failed sitcom rehash!"[Image credit: Getty Images]
