  • Samsung's Galaxy S5 is trickier to repair than its ancestor

An easily expandable phone isn't always an easily repairable phone. If you need proof, take a look at iFixit's newly completed teardown of the Galaxy S5. While Samsung's latest flagship gets some kudos for its removable battery and microSD slot, it's considerably tougher to take apart than its GS4 predecessor. You now have to remove the display if you want to replace any of the internals, and the removal process is especially tricky; part replacements are only easy once you're past this daunting hurdle. There aren't any surprises under the hood, although it's worth noting that Samsung is using a Maxim heart rate sensor chip and a Synaptics fingerprint reader. From all indications, the GS5 is still easier to fix than some phones we know -- it's just not the walk in the park that we saw last year.

Through another partnership with Maxim, Gears of War: Judgment will offer a free OverRun-compatible map to all players next week, May 15, called Dreadnought. This new map is set on a derelict ship, used by the COG at the outset of the war to transport captured Berserkers. This is the second free piece of DLC sponsored by Maxim. The first free map, Haven, arrived on April 2, when Execution mode was introduced to Gears of War: Judgment.

Gears of War: Judgment gets two pieces of free, downloadable content a few weeks after the game launches on March 19: The Haven multiplayer map and Execution mode, both scheduled to hit Xbox Live on April 2.Haven is a frozen, ancient monastery in the Azura mountains, featuring an asymmetrical, circular layout with all paths leading to the center. Lead level designer Jim Brown says "nowhere is really safe" in Haven. "It makes for especially hectic Domination games because the rings are easy to access and difficult to defend."Execution mode has players attempt to kill every member of the opposing team before time runs out, though unless hit with a one-shot-kill weapon (see: Booshka) or a follow-up execution move, enemies will enter a "Down But Not Out" state, where they will revive after a period of time. Gotta get that doubletap.Oh, and both of these pieces of DLC are sponsored by Maxim, for some reason.

A throng of new apps are coming to Xbox 360s worldwide, so if you've been feeling like your dash needs more squares with logos in them then today won't disappoint. Today sees the US launch of Maxim and CNET apps, with the latter also coming to Canada, while Karaoke and SkyDrive apps roll out worldwide (excluding Japan and United Arab Emirates for Karaoke). As shown above, SkyDrive lets you view pictures and videos stored on your Microsoft cloud, allowing Jenny to guffaw at memories of her sister's apparently hilarious wedding dress by watching the recording on her TV. Aww.Other Xbox 360 apps cropping up across the globe today include VEVO expanding to Spain, Italy, and France, and CinemaNow hopping over to Canada. Xbox spokesoldier Major Nelson also detailed a list of over 40 apps coming to various regions before spring 2013, including MTV, PBS, Flixster, and Vimeo apps for the US.

  • Maxim HD for iPad to halt production, will re-emerge via Mag+

Maxim stirred up some fears among the early 20-something male demographic when it announced that its iPad app Maxim HD would no longer be updating past the June issue. This led many to assume that Maxim was leaving the iPad as a digital distribution platform. Well fear not, frat boys, Maxim PR rep Nora Garrity told AllThingsD that the company is simply switching to a different publishing framework which is used to translate the magazine into iPad format. Up through the June 2011 issue, the iPad edition of Maxim was assembled using technology from Bite Sized Candy, a digital publishing house that counts Outside, Epic, and Reader's Digest among their clients. When Maxim relaunches on the iPad this fall, the magazine will use Mag+ as its digital publishing platform. Mag+ has a significantly larger client base than Bite Sized Candy, including such popular magazines as MacWorld Sweden, Popular Photography, Popular Science, and FHM Norway. No word yet on the exact date Maxim plans to launch again on the iPad, but in the meantime if you are looking for pictures of hot girls I recommend you check out something called the Internet.

  • Sega picks America's next top Bayonetta model in Maxim competition

Sega and Maxim.com have selected a winner in their search for a model that best captures the lead character from forthcoming action title Bayonetta. The young lady, Andrea Bonaccorso, walks away (slowly, considering she has guns for shoes) with an Xbox 360, a copy of the game and a 50-inch Panasonic TC-P50X1 HDTV Plasma TV. She'll also appear on Maxim.com, in a sensible, dignified outfit, we're sure. So how did she qualify for such an honor? This is really what it says in the press release: "While some entrants perfectly mirrored the outfit of the character and others simply donned librarian glasses, Andrea married both elements to come out on top." So, there you have it. We're rewarding this girl for wearing both clothes and glasses. Meanwhile, Joystiq and Joystiq.com selected a loser in Sega and Maxim.com's Bayonetta Model Search and it's all of us.

Had we been consulted, we would have told the parties responsible that fulfilling subscriptions of the now-defunct EGM with the dumb man's Playboy (Maxim) was a pretty crummy idea. Now we've got some evidence of that courtesy of Kathleen O'Donnell, who's none too happy that her 12-year-old Jake has received two issues of Maxim, despite her requests that it stop. "When I saw it, I didn't think it was a magazine my son should be looking at," she told CBS affiliate WBZ.It's a cruddy situation all around, but we'd like to give a small protip to young Jake: If someone starts sending you pictures of half-naked ladies, keep that to yourself.[Via The Escapist]

click to embiggen ... the full image While some folks wait to subscribe to the reanimated EGM later this year, those who currently have a subscription to the deceased periodical have begun receiving their replacement magazine: Maxim. Yes, the mag that controversially scored 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand higher than Killzone 2 and Street Fighter IV is clearly the right replacement for the demographic.A note on the issue of Maxim arriving in mailboxes states that the balance of customers' paid EGM subscription will be fulfilled by the engorging engaging mag. Have fun, boys! And, um, sorry to any of those female subscribers. We're sure you'll love all those articles Maxim is famous for.[Thanks, Dan]

Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, Maxim has dropped knowledge upon us. Read this, know this, feel it in your bones: 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand has been scored higher than both Killzone 2 and Street Fighter IV. This comes as GameTrailers member G00se has posted scans of the latest issue, in which 50 Cent is given a 4/5, Killzone 2 a 3.5/5 and Street Fighter IV a 3/5. Maxim calls 50 Cent "a wanksta proof gem," noting its new Fiddy songs, co-op play and "a story that is Indiana Jones meets Scarface." Killzone 2 -- which the magazine refers to as Kill Zone 2 -- is labeled "the hottest girl at the ball, if not quite the best dancer." And SFIV? Maxim notes that "it takes the series to 3D" -- even though that actually happened ages ago -- but "loses a fistful of its old-school soul."We can't think of any possible way to expand upon this. No, really, that's all we got.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • 50 Cent game better than Killzone 2 & Street Fighter IV, says Maxim

GameTrailers.com member GooseGoose has scanned a new issue of Maxim, the leading authority on video games. In it, the reviews crew reveals that the new 50 Cent game barely outdoes Killzone 2. Sony's upcoming FPS is "the hottest girl at the ball," but that can't compare to "a Wanksta-proof gem." Street Fighter IV also falters, lacking "old-school soul." Discuss. [Thanks, Mads K.!]

Epic Games has put together a little video for Maxim about the audio in Gears of War 2. Snore-worthy, right? Nope. It's actually a fun little six-minute romp showcasing the work that goes into all the little sounds we'll hear in the game releasing Nov. 7. An interesting factoid is that 85% of the audio in the game is new, according to Audio Director Mike Larson. There's also a brief interview with the game's composer, Steve Jablonsky, who did the music for Command & Conquer 3 and the Transformers movie. Check it out after the break.

This reminds us of that pool game with strippers ...Zen Studios is trying to combine two great tastes into one: pinball and the girls of Maxim. According to the product pitch (discovered by Siliconera), "MAXIM PINBALL for the Sony PSP™ is a pick-up-and-play pinball title featuring the kind of content expected from any product bearing the Maxim name: babes, sports, gadgets, fantasies ... whatever fits the lifestyle interests of today's young adult male."The studio is currently looking for a publisher and thinks the game will resonate quite well with the PSP audience. "Maxim Pinball provides a compelling experience that is sure to appeal to the PSP's™ core demographic: males age 18-34." If this game became reality, would you buy it?

Oh no, PSP Fanboy is using sex to promote its site again! It's true... they say that sex sells, and the people behind Tekken know it. For a Maxim photo shoot, they had some models dress up (or down) as Tekken models. Taking some inspiration from Dead or Alive, the photographers then placed those models under running water. The following video won't disappoint you... unless you're at work and your boss realizes what kind of pevert you are. So, I'm giving this an EXTREMELY NOT SAFE FOR WORK notice. Enjoy![Update 2: New PSP-compatible video and newly hosted video after the cut. Sweet, huh? (Streaming video coming soon. Sorenson isn't working, drats!)]

Apparently some of you guys are really excited about higher quality images on your high definition TV's. I don't know if it was because of our mention, but a truck full Maxim's parts (possibly including some of their "true" high definition amplifiers) was hijacked recently. I'm not sure what you could do with $565,000 worth of amplifiers, but I'm sure it wouldn't include MNF at your place now would it? Cuz you'd leave us a note in the tips form right? right?
