  • Breakfast Topic: What memorial would you leave behind in WoW?

"Honey," my wife casually said while I was trying to tank a rather strange ZA run that had decided to kill the lynx boss first, "what memorial would you leave to your character in WoW?" "What, like an item?" "Maybe, but not necessarily." I cursed under my breath as Halazzi dropped another lightning totem. "Like the Jar of Ashes. Just some cool thing in the world that would let people who played the game after you know you were there." "I've always wanted them to put in a hair shirt for me." "Funny." She made a face at me and I went back to tanking. But now that I've had time to think about it, it's a fair question. I've always loved the crypt in the Badlands -- probably due to my being a huge Robert E. Howard fan, but still, having a set of tier 2 armor on a stand in there with my character's name on it would be pretty much the best thing I could imagine. Failing that, stick my name on a revamped Drake Talon Cleaver. So how about you? What would you do if you could ask the devs to immortalize you in game?

  • Algorithm places September 11th victims next to friends at 9/11 Memorial

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. The brilliant memorial (partially shown above) to be unveiled that day is radical not only as a result of on-site electronics, but also thanks to a computer algorithm, responsible for resting fallen victims next to each other based on affiliation, not the alphabet. Victims will be grouped by employer, but also by their friendships -- before the towers fell, and now for generations to come.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Weber's On the Grill

It's Memorial Day, and hopefully that means you're celebrating the onset of summer by putting some meat on a hot grill until it tastes amazing. If you need a little help, though, Weber's official iPhone app (or the iPad version) can be there -- it's got references, recipes, tips, grilling timers, and even a shopping list feature (although if you're planning to grill today, hopefully you've been marinating since last night!). The app is excellent, with big, colorful pictures, a host of options for serious grillers, and more recipes than you can cook in one summer. You might think that it's a bit pricey at $4.99, but don't forget that a comparable recipe book (there are over 250 recipes in the app) would be much more expensive. And if you're grilling so much that you need an app to help you cook, why not shell out for the best? If you're really that cheap, there are a few other griller's helpers apps out there (and Grill-It! isn't bad for just 99 cents), but in this case, the five bucks is worth it. Good luck at the BBQ today!

Today's broadcasts of Michael Jackson's memorial services have become s big of a television event as there has ever been, with networks domestically planning to cover the proceedings in high definition, but Sky News HD is following up on its broadcast of the Obama Inauguration by taking of the Sky Arts 1 HD channel again, and Cinedigm flicks on its digital distribution network, though not in 3D, it will air the memorial starting at 1 p.m. EST for free at theaters around the country. So let us know, which network will you be tuning to / avoiding this afternoon, or are you already switching back and forth with one gloved hand on the remote, comparing camera angles and contrast levels in detail?Update: A live HD stream from Microsoft & Canada's Inmusic.com is available and apparently not subject to geographic restrictions for those tuning in via desktop (Thanks, Aaron) Read - Jackson memorial live in high definition in movie theaters and on TV Read - World will watch Jackson memorial Read - Michael Jackson Memorial In High Definition Read - Media is all about Michael Jackson Read - Michael Jackson Memorial Coverage times / networks

  • Metamorial: Game writers remember Dave Arneson

Somewhere between co-creating Dungeons & Dragons and teaching at Full Sail College, Dave Arneson left an indelible mark on the gaming landscape. Every time we roll for initiative or challenge the dungeon master's ability to adapt, Arneson's guiding hand can be felt. We've gathered sentiments shared by our colleagues around the internet for you here, and encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments section below, about the man that helped move role-playing into the limelight of gaming.Ars Technica: "Get out your classic rule books. Invite some friends over. Keep a chair empty for a fallen friend, and play for a few hours. Not online, in person. Order a pizza ... Remember Dave Arneson, a man who wasn't satisfied with the game when his parents brought home an Avalon Hill title. When he began changing the rules, he began changing the world."

  • Zu Online community mourns earthquake victims

As most people have heard by now, a massive earthquake struck the Sichuan province of China four days ago, killing 12,000 people and leaving as many as 18,000 more missing. The colossal tragedy shocked not only the Chinese, but all the people of the world.Players of the Chinese MMO Zu Online were no exception. Without any prior planning, they collected together in the game's wuxia fantasy setting -- the mythic past of the the very region struck by this week's terrible disaster -- to mourn those lost in the earthquake, and to pray for their families.A Zu player put together a tribute video, cross-cutting between footage from the in-game memorial service and photographs from the media coverage of the disaster, and posted it on the game's official forums. It's a noble tribute to the deceased. Watch it if you feel compelled.[Via MMORPG]

  • One Shots: The Emperor Family Academy

As shown in a recent One Shots, there was a gathering of Amarr in memoriam of a thousand days passing since the death of Emperor Doriam II in EVE Online. This is another image from that in-game gathering, sent to us by Rodj Blake, that we wanted to show off today. The large structure in the center of the planet is the Emperor Family Academy, where the memorial was held, and if you look at the full-size image, you can make out some of the approximately 70 ships in attendance as a semi-circle of dots on the right-hand side of the station. (And to think -- most of the "dots" are larger-sized ships!) Do you have a screenshot of an in-game event that you attended? Perhaps just some fun RP event that you and your guild sponsored? If so, send those screenshots in to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com. Yours could be featured next!%Gallery-9798%

Today we actually have a really great explanation of just what was going on in the EVE Online screenshot above. Since Rodj Blake, CEO of PIE (Praetoria Imperialis Excubitoris) was kind enough to send a full description, we're turning it over to him! Last Sunday, players of EVE Online gathered in the Amarr solar system to commemorate a thousand days since the death of Emperor Doriam II. Various members members of the Amarr RP community gave speeches whilst outside the main station in the system (the Emperor Family Academy) a fleet of around seventy Amarrian ships gathered. This image showshow part of the fleet (led by two Navy Issue Apocalypse-class battleships and a Paladin-class Marauder) in close up, orbiting the station line astern. Do you have screenshots of either player-run or GM-run events? If so, we'd love to see them. Just send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com. Your screenshots could be the next ones featured here!%Gallery-9798%

  • One Shots: A Barrens memorial

Today we'd like to share with you a memorial that not all that many new World of Warcraft players may have ever seen -- or if they've seen it, they may not know the story behind it. This One Shot comes from Litamay from the Lightbringer server, who popped by to see the Shrine of the Fallen Warrior, which features the only named resurrection angel in-game -- and one that is visible while your character is alive. She writes: [This is an image] of the shrine in the Barrens dedicated to the dev who passed away during development. We've often thought that this was a nice touch to memorialize Michel Koiter's contributions to WoW. We certainly thank him and the rest of the team for bringing such a great game to the rest of us. Do you know of an out-of-the-way place in your favorite game? Perhaps you just know of a great view? Whatever your reasons, grab some screenshots and send them to us here at oneshots@massively.com! Yours could be next!%Gallery-9798%

  • WoW players set up memorial service for croc hunter

With many still lamenting the unfortunate death of Steve Irwin, the man who struck fear into the hearts of elusive crocodiles everywhere, several World of Warcraft players have decided that it would be a marvelous idea to have an in-game memorial service. User Bubbrubb asserts in a WoW forum post that he's deeply upset about the Australian's passing and that a dignified gathering on the computerized coastal area, Zoram Strand, would be a fitting way of saying goodbye. "I would like to spell out CRIKEY with players as a tribute to his wonderous catch phrase, and then we can dance and swim in the ocean to celebrate his life instead of mourning his death."The World of Warcraft has been host to similar events in the past, providing a common virtual ground for those hoping to express their grief with others. Of course, it also provides an outlet for those hoping to barge in on funerals and completely wreck the proceedings with little fear for real repercussion or reprisal. Let's hope there's a magical security detail for this one. [Via CVG]
