During an interview with The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, God of War creator David Jaffe said the game he was "most jealous" of was Metal Gear Solid 4. "To make a game of that scale and at that level of quality clearly took a whole hell of a lot of tenacity and vision," he explained. We've hit some choppy waters with Mr. Jaffe in the past, so as part of our continuing efforts to smooth things over, we'd like to remind him of what he has that Kojima doesn't. For one, though the story in Jaffe's may be more limited in scope, it makes sense. Also? Swords on chains. Oh, and no monkeys crapping themselves. Big plus.

David Jaffe is the focus of The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' weekly feature Ten Questions, where a member of the industry is subjected to ... well, ten questions. When asked about which title the acclaimed video game designer is "most jealous" of, he named Metal Gear Solid 4 as his choice, praising it as "an amazing achievement of both gameplay and mastering the process of game production. To make a game of that scale and at that level of quality clearly took a whole hell of a lot of tenacity and vision."You know what we think? Jaffe states in the feature that if he wasn't a game developer, he would be a movie director or film editor -- and we gotta say, MGS4 is as film-like as they come.[Via Joystiq]

  • The best thing you'll see today: Metal Gear voice cast improv

A mere five days into the new year and our sanity is being brought into question. Is this video after the break really what it seems to be? The principal voice cast of Metal Gear Solid 4 improvising a group therapy session during which the lines between their real selves and the characters they portray break down with high-larious results? Yep, it is.UltraNeko, host of the YouTube series Sadie's Gaming Infection, somehow managed to get David Hayter (Solid Snake), Jennifer Hale (Naomi Hunter), Paul Eiding (Col. Campbell), Christopher Randolph (Otacon), and Quinton Flynn (Raiden) into one room for one of the most bizarre -- yet entertaining -- gaming-related videos we've ever seen.Things we learned from watching the video: David Hayter likes to CQC random people on the street; Christopher Randolph thinks his cat is a real Metal Gear Mk. II; oh, and Quinton Flynn seems to really want to be the star of the next MGS. Raiden starring in MGS5 -- surely a joke, right? What's next? Area 51 is actually a secret stronghold of The Patriots? Sure. Hit the break and prepare to leave reality behind.

How dedicated is the vocal cast of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots? So dedicated that they believe they are the characters to which they breathe sound and life into. Is it some form of hypnotic gene therapy which brings out such wondrous talent? Maybe ... it's the work of the Patriots? *Cue dramatic music* Whatever the reason be, they now meet up regularly to (jokingly) discern between what really is game and reality.Dr. Sadie, records one such session documenting how far our beloved actors have had one too many serums in the neck. Paul Eiding (aka Colonel Campbell) is on a junkie binge for some Scissors 61. While Christopher Randolph (aka Otacon) reveals he's been turning his cat "Mark" into Mark II ... by strapping a camera to its back. David Hayter (Old Snake), Jennifer Hale (Naomi), and Quinton Flynn (Raiden) are all there with their buddies with some hilarious consequences. See it all after the break. Thanks go out to Dr. Sadie for totally breaking doctor-patient confidentiality! [Thanks LAZoftheTamarinds!]

<< BACK (3) COMMENT NEXT (1) >> Is it a cliché to call Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots the gamer's game? Of course it is. But that's the thing with clichés, they're just so perfect at explaining what we're too unimaginative to express in fantastic detail. Fitting then, that MGS4 is a near-impossible amalgamation of cliché and creativeness. A spawn of convoluted histories and a bold vision of gaming's future. If it was up to creator Hideo Kojima to expound the merits of his masterpiece you'd be in for a verbose, probably boring -- and most certainly unplayable -- account. Thankfully, we will do our best to provide a terse study of Joystiq's runner-up to Game of the Year 2008. So then, what makes MGS4 so darn special?

Those that have played Metal Gear Solid 4 probably stumbled upon the "Integral" podcast through the in-game iPod. The included podcast mentioned future episodes, but no updates have been delivered yet. Well, looks like that's going to change, as the first new episode of the podcast will be available to download on January 8th, 2009. The episode will feature Ken Imaizumi, Aki Saito, Sean Eyestone talking about all things Metal Gear-related. Perhaps they'll talk about LittleBigPlanet -- or the newly announced iPhone game. Expect episodes to be released every two weeks afterwards. The podcast is available exclusively within Metal Gear Solid 4. So, when January comes around, pop in the Blu-ray disc and give the Integral podcast a listen.[Thanks, SnoopYTimes!]

  • Kojima calls Metal Gear Solid Touch a 'simple MGS' shooter

Both 1UP and IGN have poked and prodded new details out of Japanese mag Famitsu's recent Metal Gear Solid Touch reveal, lifting the touchable curtains somewhat off Konami's upcoming head scratcher. According to the article, the game will be based on MGS4, with Metal Gear mastermind Kojima describing the iPhone app as a "Simple MGS." Translation: It's a shooter. In fact, Metal Gear's emphasis on stealth is being pocketed this time around in favor of something that is easier to pick up and play on the go, with much of the gameplay involving sliding and pinching the screen in typical iPhone fashion to move Snake's view and zoom in and out of targets. Additionally, shooting bad guys and exploding barrels is taken care of by tapping directly on the screen. We remain interested, albeit confused, about Snake's latest mission. But the weathered soldier isn't getting any younger, and with all of these fingers in the way, we wonder if he'll be able to see anything at all.Read – Kojima Goes In-Depth on Metal Gear Solid TouchRead – Metal Gear Solid Touch Detailed

Old soldiers never die; they just become LittleBigPlanet costumes. Revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2008, the Old Snake SackBoy costume is a step closer to your PS3's HDD – and it's not on a solo mission.Sony's Hong Kong PlayStation site now lists a Metal Gear Solid costume pack for LBP along with a level pack. Old Snake, Meryl, and Screaming Mantis are available separately; buy the set, and Sony throws in Raiden (MGS4 version). There are no details on the level pack contents, so, as LBP so wonderfully encourages, we'll have to use our imagination. Better yet, what would you like (or expect) it to include? No date for the packs Stateside just yet, but it would make us awfully merry if Sony could sneak this into next Thursday's PSN Store update.[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Contrary to popular rumor, Metal Gear Solid (in any form) will not be coming to the Xbox 360 (for now), but the franchise will be going to the iPhone. Team Kojima and Konami just announced that Metal Gear Solid Touch will be releasing to the iPhone next year and that the marketing promotion's green aesthetic has nothing to do with the Xbox. Truthfully, we didn't want MGS anyway ::sniffle:: [Via Joystiq]

The cat's out of the bag. The Sony Hong Kong website has let slip details of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid LittleBigPlanet DLC. The content has grown substantially since we first saw Old Snake at TGS in October. He'll be joined by his buddies Meryl, Screaming Mantis and, if you buy the character pack, Raiden. Not only that but a level construction pack will also be made available. We have a feeling it'll include something quite surprising ...There's no telling when these will be made available, or for how much, but we assume they'll be with us quite soon if they're already being listed on the Sony HK site. Would make a nice Christmas present during next week's Xmas Eve PSN Store update.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Sorry PS3 fans, "a next Metal Gear is" not coming to your favorite black behemoth of a console. In fact, it's not going to any console (sorry Xbox fans, maybe one day). Konami has announced today that Metal Gear Solid is going to the iPhone in the form of Metal Gear Solid Touch next Spring. This won't be a new story, though. It's essentially a very watered down port of MGS4, as "each stage's location and characters are based on the story of MGS4." In case you're interested, Silent Hill and Dance Dance Revolution are also making the transition to iPhone. So there you have it, you can stop fretting over Kojima's cryptic message and enjoy Christmas.

Only two PS3-exclusive titles went home with awards this past Sunday from Spike TV's annual Video Game Awards. Media Molecule won the honor of "Studio of the Year" for their work on LittleBigPlanet, which, unsurprisingly also netted them "Best PS3 Game." The embedded video above comes from the PS.Blog where Jeff Rubenstein caught up with the glowing-faced recipients moments after the show had ended. As for that other PS3-exclusive title, Metal Gear Solid 4 -- the tactical espionage title which debuted back in June -- won "Best Graphics" and "Best Original Score." While we definitely believe both wins are well-deserved, we could've seen MGS4 as Game of the Year material, but that's just us. It's also interesting to note, and a bit ironic we should say, that MGS4 won Best Original Score amongst a recent debacle regarding just how original that score really is -- well, its main theme, rather. With all footnotes aside, congratulations to both winners!

  • Metal Gear Solid theme unused in MGS4 due to plagiarism claims

    by

    12.12.2008

Why wasn't the iconic Metal Gear Solid theme used in Metal Gear Solid 4? Because, as Gamasutra reports, EGM learned in an interview with series composer Norihiko Hibino that unnamed Russian composers claimed Konami "stole their music."A video posted on YouTube (viewable here) shows series creator, Hideo Kojima, being presented with a recording of Georgy Sviridov's "Pushkin's Garland," a 1979 classical work which contains a similar-sounding passage. The MGS theme was first heard in the original PlayStation game, circa 1995 1998. It was written by Konami's Tappi "TAPPY" Iwase, and has subsequently been reworked and remixed, most notably by film composer Harry Gregson-Williams, who scored MGS2-4. Speaking to EGM, Hibino flatly denies that the MGS theme was "stolen," but admits that "Konami was too sensitive about the situation and just decided not to use that music in the game."

To celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the PlayStation 3, Weekly Famitsu takes a look back at some of the big events relating to Sony's console since its launch. One of the most interesting portions of their feature is the part where Entertain reveals the top 5 best-selling titles in Japan so far: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots -- 671,706 Minna no Golf 5 (Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds) -- 408,175 Shin Sangoku Musou 5 (Dynasty Warriors 6) -- 371,443 Gundam Musou (Dynasty Warriors: Gundam) -- 317,580 World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 (Pro Evolution Soccer 2008) -- 316,533 Not too many surprises here -- the Japanese sure love the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Furthermore, it was revealed that the PS3 itself has sold 2,469,448 units since its Japanese debut. Also worth noting is the fact that 476,334 copies of MGS4 were sold during the first 4 days of its launch, meaning almost 71% of the copies were snatched up during that time. Did any of these games surprise you guys?

A couple of hours ago, on Kojima Productions' homepage, a link in the form of a green power button icon appeared. Clicking on it leads to this splash page which alternates between the Konami logo and the cryptic message above. The green color and power button symbol are leading some to believe this has something to do with the Xbox 360. However, keep in mind that the power icon appears on just about every electronic device, including the PS3. The icon as depicted above is also slightly modified, since includes an exclamation mark, which is a trademark of the Metal Gear series. Finally, note that "mgst" appears on the URL, which could be an acronym of some sort. What do you guys think? Let the speculation commence![Thanks to everyone who sent this!]

Those would be "Gold" awards in Sony Computer Entertainment Japan's annual PlayStation Awards, not actual gold PlayStations. No, we think excellent sales are reward enough to render the composition of a congratulatory gong irrelevant -- the Gold award only goes to those games that sold over 500,000 copies in Japan over the last year. This year's PlayStation recipients: Senior citizen stealth sim Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots; pointy-haired sword swinger Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII; and Sega's Phantasy Star Portable, which we failed to include in the headline. Similarly snubbed but given a fancy "Platinum" award was Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which sold over two million copies and completely messed up our Japanese hardware sales charts. Hideo Kojima snagged an accolade for himself during MTV's Game Awards. He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his Metal Gear Solid series. While such awards are usually given to retirees, Kojima had this to say: "I have to say, even though I received this award, let me state that I will not retire. I will continue to create games as long as I live." We're looking forward to these future titles. Hopefully, we'll see them on the PS3 ... with more bad-asses in them.Watch the video, after the cut.
