Metal Slug XX, compatible with both PSP and PS Vita, is this week's new recruit for the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection. PS Plus subscribers can grab SNK's run-and-gunner gratis starting tomorrow - the usual asking price is $20. Metal Slug XX is an altered version of Metal Slug 7 on the Nintendo DS. It features additional ad-hoc co-op and mini-games on top of the core DS game. The series is known for its expressive sprites, powerful weaponry, insane boss battles and blatant disregard for bullet rationing.

  • Metal Slug XX rolls out on Japanese XBLA May 19

After SNK announced the game way back in December, it looks like Metal Slug XX has an official release date on XBLA ... in Japan at least. According to Xbox.com Japan, Metal Slug XX (an upgraded port of Metal Slug 7) is set to arrive next Wednesday, May 19. It's important to note that release dates are not always worldwide, so it's possible that the game will be released later in other regions. At the very least, it appears that the game is ready to go, so hopefully we'll be seeing it sooner rather than later. [Via Siliconera]

  • Newegg drops prices on 50 Cent, Metal Slug 7, and more

Thanks to Newegg, you can grab 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand for a price closer than ever to 50 cents. As part of a "blowout" sale, you can pick up 50 for $9.99 on Xbox 360, or $12.99 on PS3 (a paltry 300 Cent more) with free shipping. If that's not the particular style of bullet-ridden gameplay you seek, why not grab Metal Slug 7 on DS for just $9? Or incite real violence in your home with Singstar -- available on its own for $10, or with two microphones for $25, with Volume 2 also down to $10. Many of the other deals are questionable, but they're also cheap. Maybe you didn't care about Beowulf on PSP, but you probably care a little more now that it's $4. And $14 is a much more reasonable price for the chance to enjoy Castlevania Judgment's brutally insane cutscenes and actually kind of enjoyable gameplay. Click the following links to browse the sale by platform. Happy impulse purchasing! DS Wii PS3 PSP Xbox 360

  • Atlus bringing Metal Slug XX to UMD in February

Above, you'll see a snippet of the box art for Metal Slug: Double X -- one X short of ESRB problems. While the box touts a PlayStation Network logo, the game will only be compatible with the classic PSP-1000 through 3000 series. Why? An Atlus representative tells Joystiq that the publisher has no plans to release a downloadable version on the PlayStation Store; though a digital copy of 2007's Metal Slug Anthology (published by SNK) is currently available. Launching February 23 exclusively on UMD, the upcoming 2D shooter, which is an updated version of Metal Slug 7 for DS, will feature seven levels, 70 mission-based challenges and an ad-hoc two-player multiplayer mode. With a $20 price tag, Metal Slug: Double X sounds like a deal. Too bad PSP Go owners, once again, will be unable to cash in.

Metal Slug 7 on XBLA was originally slated as a 2009 title; however, the latest reports say it'll be pushed back to 2010. Speaking to Siliconera, Ignition Entertainment's acquisitions manager, Robert Macchiaverna, says the side-scrolling shmup won't make it out this year."It is still happening," said Macchiaverna. "But, I believe that's scheduled to be a 2010 title." Instead, Ignition will be working on The King of Fighters Ultimate Match '98. On the bright side, you can play Metal Slug 7 right now ... just, unfortunately, not on your 360.

  • DS Fanboy Review: Metal Slug 7

My initial impression of SNK Playmore's Metal Slug 7 was that it was a little bit bland for a Metal Slug game. It certainly lacks the personality and irresistible wackiness that characterize pretty much every other entry in the series. Compared to the DS's other big run-and-gun game, Contra 4, which not only revived, but improved upon its legendary legacy, Metal Slug 7 is a bit underwhelming, a competent imitation of other Metal Slugs at best. After more playtime, however, I found that the imitation is accurate enough where it counts (mostly the controls). Even in its diminished state, Metal Slug is irresistibly fun. %Gallery-16835%

After seeing the ho-hum critical response to Metal Slug 7, I decided to give the title a look in the ol' shovelscope in order to further explore how critics' scores can heavily affect our perceptions of a game before we're ever able to form our own opinions. Plus, I just wanted an excuse to talk about it. Pedigree While the Metal Slug series doesn't have much mainstream recognition, it's generally regarded as a well-kept secret amongst 2D enthusiasts. Furthermore, it's near-gospel to fans of side-scrolling run and gun titles, such as Contra and Gunstar Heroes. The original title is interesting in that it served as a glorification of 2D gaming right at the exact time when 3D gaming was taking over. It looked and played like a 16-bit title on steroids. Its characters were cute, its colors were bright, but the game orchestrated sprites into an all-encompassing celebration of hand-drawn beauty and retro charm. And with great fandom comes great pressure. Let us not forget the support of all things SNK by the company's monomaniacal fans, a group arguably more devoted than Nintendo's fan club. Although SNK must greatly appreciate the support and instant-buzz generated by the fans, they are also subject to very high expectations.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/xbox/Metal_Slug_7_Arkanoid_Space_Invaders_and_KoF_98_to_XBLA'; On the Xbox Live Arcade news fronts, Microsoft just announced that Taito's Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid (with 120 stages and online play) will release to the XBLA this Winter. Also announced was old school racer R-Type and that SNK Playmore's The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match will release Spring of 2009 and Metal Slug 7 will be releasing to the Arcade at a time yet to be determined. Now those, friends, are a few nice Xbox Live Arcade titles to look forward to.

var digg_url = 'http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/08/king-of-fighters-98-arkanoid-space-invaders-extreme-metal-sl/'; Hot from the Microsoft keynote at the Tokyo Game Show comes more retro arcade action. Been jonesing to play more Arkanoid ever since that thing came out back in 1986? It was Breakout on steroids, and ate quarters like Cookie Monster eats chocolate chip cookies. Super Arkanoid and Space Invaders Extreme will be out on XBLA this winter, and it'll be joined next year by Metal Slug 7 , R-Type and The King of Fighters '98: Ultimate Match. The games will all be updated with new graphics, music, two-player and online modes, and will do a good job towards filling that vintage hole in your heart. Now Capcom, please give us some Darkstalkers, and we'll be happy.

We would never have associated gravelly-voiced Welsh songstress Bonnie Tyler with Metal Slug, but some genius at Ignition combined the two for the latest Metal Slug 7 trailer. Against all expectations, the rousing '80s power anthem "Holding out for a Hero" is the perfect companion piece to SNK's game. Not that we're Bonnie Tyler fans or anything, obviously, because we only listen to totally manly music like, uh, Slayer and stuff. Yeah. As for the game itself, it still looks awesome, despite some importers suggesting it's not all it should be.%Gallery-16835%

We've heard some pretty bad things about how the Japanese version of Metal Slug 7 turned out, and that's so sad! Because it continues to look so awesome in trailers! Look at this one, in which a giant walking robot mows down tanks, trucks, helicopters, and even another giant walking robot! We're just going to continue thinking it's awesome until we play the final US version, for our own sakes. It's a lot more fun to watch videos like this (and several more new videos at IGN) and look forward to playing it. There'll be plenty of time to be disappointed later. And at least it isn't Commando: Steel Disaster.%Gallery-16835%

We know Metal Slug 7 hasn't released yet (we're counting the days!), but the latest trailer for the title proved one thing to us: this game is going to be one manly time. But, what to do, as Contra 4 already takes up space on our shelf of manly stuff? Are we to take it down for Metal Slug 7? Can the two co-exists as incredibly awesome and manly games? Which one do you think is more manly and buff?

Is there some sort of global law that states SNK must make a new Metal Slug every year or face certain doom? We kid, but it seems that way, what with the series hitting its seventh installment and there being a larger proliferation of ports out there than Starbucks in Seattle.Proclaiming that it is the "ultimate game," this trailer for the Nintendo DS version of Metal Slug 7 is all business. Loud, hot lead business. It's the first entry in the very action-packed series on Ninty's dual-screener, which seems from this video to be more than up to the sprite-pushing challenge it presents. There's nary a hint of slowdown, which tells us either the programmers are ace or the video is sped up. Surely it's the former. We'll know for certain when the game hits – nay, demolishes – shelves in November.

The latest trailer for Metal Slug 7 gets a computer-generated "brushed steel and industrial noises" presentation usually reserved for commercials about truck sales ... or movies for dudes. It makes huge, bombastic claims: "THE ULTIMATE CHARACTERS." "THE ULTIMATE WEAPONS." "THE ULTIMATE GAME." Like a Michael Bay movie, Metal Slug 7 is full of big explosions, big machines, and big explosions. And like the average Michael Bay movie, it's going to be a challenge to get all the way through it. However, unlike, say, Transformers, we expect to enjoy Metal Slug 7 for as many as two hours. Probably more!%Gallery-16835%[Via press release]

The unsourced rumor of a 2008 European Metal Slug 7 release date must be acknowledged. It turns out that Europeans will not only get Metal Slug 7 in 2008, but they will also get it pretty much the same time as everywhere else. A press release has come through and announced an "Autumn 2008" release. Yes, that means Fall -- Autumn is for those lame Europeans and non-lame Australians. To accompany this timely news, five new screens of the kill-o-rama have been updated in our gallery. With seven brand new missions six playable characters and apparently the biggest SLUG vehicle ever, this is exactly what hardcore Metal Slug fans need. %Gallery-16835%[Via press release]

According to French gaming site Wiiz, our brothers and sisters across the pond might be getting Metal Slug 7 later this year. Should this go down, we imagine you'll be just as intoxicated by the action on your DS as we will be when the title hits U.S. shores. Considering that Wiiz doesn't source anyone for this "news," however, we're going to keep this one filed under the Rumors section. %Gallery-16835%[Via Go Nintendo]
