With the 3DS not doing as well as Nintendo would like, and with a pressing need to get the device in as many hands as possible before the Vita hits, it's issuing two new holiday bundles of ... the DSi XL. On November 6, you'll be able to get Nintendo's oversized handheld in new Midnight Blue or Metallic Rose colors, each with a copy of Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem, for the normal DSi XL price of $169.99. That's the same price as the 3DS, by the way. So, basically, these bundles are excellent competition for the new system.%Gallery-137457%

  • Metallic Rose DSi XL bafflingly arriving Sept. 18

From massive price cuts to tossing the 3DS in a cradle, we're starting to suspect that when it comes to the DS platform, Nintendo seems to be throwing it all to the wall and seeing what sticks. The latest evidence: Today the company announced that a new color of the DSi XL, "Metallic Rose," will arrive on Sept. 18. And yes, we said the "DSi XL." As in "I gave this DSi XL to my legally blind grandma so she could see her sudoku except she fractured her wrist attempting to heave the thing from her coffee table." That DSi XL.

  • DS Lite discontinued at GameStop

We caught wind of an internal GameStop memo this morning announcing the discontinuation of Nintendo's DS Lite. The memo (pictured above) asks employees to remove displays of Crimson, Black, and Metallic Rose models, once they've burned through their stock -- we've since confirmed the fact with an employee of the gaming chain. Not a huge shocker, of course, given the fact that the five-year-old system has since been eclipsed by 2009's DSi and, more recently, the company's glasses-free 3D portable, the 3DS. We have reached out to Nintendo for comment on the matter and will update this post with official word once received. Update: We heard back from Nintendo, receiving the usual "Nintendo doesn't comment on rumor and speculation."

  • First-time modder wings it, produces classy DS mod

Kudos to Flickr user Obajoo, who went and did what none of us are brave enough to do: despite having no previous experience, she added this classy design of two silhouetted birds to her Metallic Rose DS. Writing about the process on her blog, Obajoo makes it sound reasonably straightforward -- so much so that we're even beginning to think about contemplating whether or not to maybe consider customizing our DS. Hit up Obajoo's Flickr for more photos. Not all custom paint jobs end up looking quite as nice as Obajoo's. Take, for example, Elyssa's Marth tribute, viper640_0's misguided Triforce design, or this frankly frightening custom GBA. On second thoughts, we might leave ours as it is.

  • Club Nintendo giving away shiny things

Your DS just got less cool. Sorry! We're suffering from the effects as well. What has de-awesomogrified the world's supply of DS Lites? Club Nintendo. From July 1 to August 31, Nintendo of Japan will give away 1,000 Premium Silver, 1,000 Premium Platinum, and 1,000 Premium Rose DS Lites to Club Nintendo members who register two new games in that period, with winners determined by random selection. We don't even have the regular silver DS Lite, and Japan gets a super shiny version for free. Wiping off fingerprints every time you look at the thing is really the only downside.Could this mean that Nintendo won't be announcing new hardware at E3 (since they'll be giving away Lites in that period)? We think it may mean just the opposite: Nintendo is clearing out some of their existing DS Lites by throwing shiny parts on the outside and making prizes out of them.

  • Nintendo wants you to play for you (and celebrities)

Nintendo has launched a slick new website based on their new DS ad campaign, which features celebrities America Ferrera, Carrie Underwood and Liv Tyler looking very much like people having fun with DS Lites. The site is called "I Play For Me" and includes new commercials (we thought Liv Tyler was way too excited about writing her own name in Brain Age, but then we saw her excellently looped "L"), as well as video interviews with the three stars about their DS-playing habits. Basically, the pick-up-and-play nature of the handheld fits well with busy people. Oh, and girls can play games too. The real irony of this ad campaign is that if you played for you, you'd have a DS by now. This is for people who would ostensibly play to be like these famous people. Of course, to truly be like these three, you'd have to take money from Nintendo in order to play DS, instead of giving Nintendo money.

  • Nintendo to start petal-ing 'Metallic Rose' DS Lite

Don't worry if you don't find the headline funny right away. Some puns take time to take root and mature, like a fine vine.Okay, but seriously, the news: Nintendo has announced that the "Metallic Rose" DS Lite, a pinkish sort of model that many may feel compelled to bury in the garden, will become available at retailers "later this month." The model was previously attainable only as part of a Nintendogs bundle. As of May 19th, you'll be able to see the Rose shown off in commercials which star "celebrity spokespeople" like Carrie Underwood and America Ferrera. Another commercial will feature Liv Tyler, the odd one out with a Crimson/Black DS and a name that doesn't sound completely made up.[Via DS Fanboy]

  • Nintendo re-launching Metallic Rose DS Lite as standalone system

Just in case the Big N hadn't doled out enough variations of pinkish DS Lites, along comes yet another one to spend your discretionary income on. Later this month, a standalone Metallic Rose version of the handheld will be widely available in the US, but folks who managed to snag this very device in that Nintendogs bundle last year can pass right on by. Additionally, Nintendo is once again looking to the celebrities to push its wares, with America Ferrera and Carrie Underwood starring in spots with the aforesaid Rose DS and Liv Tyler showing up with the two-toned Crimson / Black edition. We're expecting the not-entirely-new hue to run the same price as all of the others, but we'd still recommend grabbing one quick if you're interested. One more look after the break.

Turns out, the rumor is true: the Metallic Rose DS Lite will be available for standalone purchase starting later this month. So, for those of you that liked the look of the unit available in the Nintendogs bundle, yet didn't want Nintendo's puppy sim (or that big paw print on the unit), you're in luck.Nintendo comments that you'll soon be seeing commercials for this new DS Lite color soon, stating that as of Monday, May 19th, you'll see celebrities America Ferrera and Carrie Underwood "featured in commercials for the Metallic Rose version of Nintendo DS."Anybody interested in picking this model up, either for themselves, or as a gift?[Via press release]

  • Rumor: Metallic Rose DS Lite inbound

Go Nintendo is reporting a rumor that those of us here in the United States could be getting a new DS Lite model soon, in the form of the beauty you see above. Keen observers will notice that this is the same color that came in the Nintendogs bundle that released alongside the Phantom Hourglass bundle, only without the paw print. This rumor comes from "a few GameStop insiders," so we're not sure we entirely believe this model is releasing. Until we get official confirmation, we aren't going to hold our breath.See also: The DS Life: Puppies at play

Alright, listen. We need everyone who doesn't already own a copy of Brain Age to go out and buy one. C'mon, people, sooner is better than later. While you're out, you can pick up a copy for everyone that you know. Perhaps then we'll finally see additional DS Lite colors here in the States.Seriously, what gives? Suddenly, even Nintendo of Korea (who only just got the DS Lite) is rolling out the rainbow, including the brand new Metallic Rose and Gloss Silver models! Where's the love, guys? Reggie, please ... go to bat for us! Make it happen. [Via GoNintendo]

  • Two new DS Lite colors ... for Japan

What, you didn't think we'd actually get a new DS Lite variant in the US, did you? If only. If only. On June 23rd, two new colors of DS Lite will be out of stock in Japan, to complement the five colors that are already consistently sold out. Silver is a whole new option for the DS Lite, and the sheer glossiness of these two new colors makes us wonder if we won't perhaps be seeing all new metallic spins of Ice Blue and Enamel Navy.Call out your sales predictions for the week of the 23rd. We should institute some sort of pool or something for this one. We're stating a firm 400,000 -- a good week, but not the best ever. After all, once you have five or six Lites, is Metallic Rose (like Noble Pink, but shiny) really necessary? We do like shiny things ....[Thanks, creamsugar!]
