Developer Motion Twin just announced an animated series based on the game ‘Dead Cells’ that releases in 2024. The series is being produced by French studio Bobbypills, who also handled the animated trailers for the game and its many DLC releases. The animated series seems to follow the game’s narrative, as it’s set on a “cursed island” with a population of “monstrous creatures'' and “prophecies depicting a flame-headed hero.”

While it's probably not fair to call it a delay, it's been a while since we've heard anything about the Android version of Dead Cells. The game's mobile release was initially announced by developer Motion Twin this past May, with the iOS version coming out as promised over the summer. Now it looks like Android owners will get a chance to play the tough-as-nails Metroidvania game almost a year after their iPhone-owning counterparts.

You'll soon get to hack and slash your way through the ever-changing castle of Dead Cells on mobile. Motion Twin's roguelike 'Metroidvania' hit is coming to iOS this summer and Android later. It arrived on consoles last August after a spell in early access on Steam.

Hollow Knight was kind of a sleeper hit, at least around these parts. It goes without saying that if we'd given it the appropriate attention, the Kickstarter-funded title would've made our game of the year list when it first came to PC in 2017. Either way, it's definitely one of the best Metroidvania games ever made. And it's getting a sequel.

    What we're playing: 'Dead Cells'

You know the drill: Last year's PC indie sleeper gets new life with a Switch release. Motion Twin's Dead Cells is one of these. It's been out for a year on Steam Early Access, but properly arrived last week on all platforms, including Nintendo's hybrid console. The game is a good fit for the system: It's a side-scrolling hack-and-slash rogue-lite with plenty of paths to explore over your many, many runs. It has simple yet delightfully vibrant visuals, and all the action is compact enough to track while playing the console on the go. In short, it's exactly the kind of title Nintendo needs on the Switch.

'Guacamelee 2' brings mayhem to PS4 and PC on August 21st

You only have to wait a few more weeks to get another fix of Mexico-inspired Metroidvania action. DrinkBox has announced that Guacamelee 2 will reach PS4 and Steam (for Windows PCs) on August 21st for a reasonable $20. It's a refinement of the formula that made the original a cult favorite, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The sequel brings slicker graphics, new moves, an upgrade system and four-player co-op to luchador Juan Aguacate's quest to protect his homeland and the entire universe. And naturally, chickens will play an instrumental role.

Coming in just four years after its initially projected release date, 2D action-RPG Chasm has a July 31st release date. Five years ago its Kickstarter closed with $191,897 pledged towards the creation of this Metroidvania-style game with procedurally generated levels. Now, early access backers on Steam will get access on the 16th, while gamer-come-latelys can buy in at the end of the month for $20 on PC, PS4 or Vita.

'Bloodstained' will scratch your 'Castlevania' itch

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (SotN) is one of the most influential games ever made. First released for the original PlayStation in 1997, the game has since been ported to nearly every platform under the sun. It perfected the series' core design concept where players could explore gigantic 2D environments at will, collecting new abilities that unlocked hidden-in-plain-sight secrets in previously traversed areas. It also iterated on the superb Super Metroid released for the SNES three years prior. That framework was so well-done that it spawned its own genre ("Metroidvania") and countless games have used it since. Koji Igarashi, SotN's co-creator, has finally brought his crowdfunded (and SotN spiritual successor) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to E3. How does it play? Pretty close to the original.

The next game by Castlevania mastermind Koji Igarashi is coming to the Nintendo Switch. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was pitched on Kickstarter in 2015 as a spiritual successor to the beloved gothic adventure series. With Igarashi at the helm and the promise of new, updated 'Metroidvania' gameplay -- a style that fuses side-scroller platforming with deep exploration and RPG mechanics -- the project raised more than $5.5 million from 64,867 backers. The updated platform support does come with a downside, however -- the Wii U version is being cancelled.

Not surprisingly, Axiom Verge has taken a while to spread across platforms -- Thomas Happ designed the entire Metroidvania-style shooter by himself, so even a straightforward port was bound to take a while. At last, though, you don't have to be picky about where you play. Happ has released a version of Axiom Verge for the Xbox One, making the mind-bending side-scroller available on every modern TV console (the Wii U version arrived on September 1st). So what took so long for this release, especially since it was available on PCs ages ago?
