'Mewtwo Strikes Back' CG remake shows off its first trailer

Pokémon The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back debuted in 1998, and now we have a trailer for the CG-rendered reimagining that's coming to theaters in Japan on July 12th. A post on the official site revealed that Masaomi Ichimura will return as a voice actor on the project, while the English account promised "a Pokémon experience like you've never seen before" and said details for its international release will come soon. This is a movie that's entirely separate from the Ryan Reynolds-voiced Detective Pikachu movie that we'll see in May. Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution has a very different look from the original's 2D animation, but it appears the plot is sticking closely to the original's theme of the cloned psychic creature seeking revenge against humanity.

Nintendo's reticence to make downloadable content has been exasperating this past decade. Is it admirable to focus on making full games, the whole thing complete and defined when it ships on a disc? Of course, but it's also exciting to see games turn into thriving ecosystems of change. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has already been tweaked, balanced and updated multiple times since its release last fall, but it was only this month that it expanded through big DLC. Mewtwo, the formidable Pokémon fighter last seen in Super Smash Bros. Melee, is back and we're checking out his moves with The A.V. Club's own Matt Gerardi on today's stream.

Nearly one month ago, Nintendo revealed legendary Pokemon Mewtwo as a playable fighter for Super Smash Bros, available only to those that own both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game. Expected to arrive in spring 2015, the downloadable character will be free to the dual-Smash players, but new information on Club Nintendo notes that all players may have access to Mewtwo down the road. While it's no guarantee, the promotion page includes a footnote that the "Mewtwo DLC may be available for purchase in the future," as corroborated by the game's Japanese site. To make the prospect of purchasing the Pokemon character in Super Smash Bros. cloudier, Game Director Masahiro Sakurai told Video Gamer this week in regards to paid DLC for the games that the development team isn't "working on anything at the moment." Those looking to guarantee that they'll get a download code for Mewtwo will need to register their copies of both Smash Bros. games on Club Nintendo by March 31, 2015. Super Smash Bros. will launch on Wii U tomorrow in North America and November 28 in Europe. For more information on the game, be sure to check out our review. [Image: Nintendo]

  • Pokemon the Series travels to Kalos in January on Cartoon Network

Pokemon the Series: XY will make its Cartoon Network debut on January 18, 8:30 a.m. ET/PT, following two movies and an animated special which will air earlier in the month. The new series will follow longtime hero Ash Ketchum's travels to the Kalos region, which is where Pokemon X / Y take place. Poke-fans of Mewtwo (who is the best pokemon anyway, no Billy you can't trade me your Ekans for him) should be especially pleased, as the two movies and special episode focus on the imperfect Mew clone. Pokemon: The First Movie will air January 4 at 8:30 a.m. ET/PT. The animated special, Pokemon: Mewtwo - Prologue to Awakening, will air January 11, also at 8:30 a.m. ET/PT. Pokemon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened will immediately follow the special at 9:00 a.m. ET/PT. More than a decade later, 10-year-old Ash continues his quest. To be the very best. Like no one ever waaaaas...

Nintendo recently showed off the evolved forms of Pokemon X and Y's three starter creatures, Froakie, Chespin and Fennekin. The latest screens and trailer also showcase Pokemon that are evolved from fossils, as well as male and female-specific forms for Pokemon. One of the Pokemon with varying forms is Mewtwo, whose previously announced Mega-evolved form is actually called Mega Mewtwo Y, accessible through the Mega Mewtwonite Y item found in Pokemon Y version. This new Pokemon X and Y trailer shows the other form, Mega Mewtwo X, a fighting/psychic type that is, you guessed it, obtained through the same means in Pokemon X. The games will launch on October 12 for 3DS.

The Pokemon Company offered more information today on the Pokemon X and Y details announced yesterday in CoroCoro. Pokemon capable of mega-evolving, such as Mewtwo, will undergo the change during battle, and only see its effects last for the duration of the battle. Eligible Pokemon must hold a "mega stone" item, each one unique to a particular creature, in order to access its latent abilities. The latest Pokemon X and Y screens and trailer also show glimpses of a new method for boosting a Pokemon's skills. Known as "super training," players can increase an individual Pokemon's base stats by playing mini-games, one being a soccer-like activity. The games will also offer "core training" workouts, allowing Pokemon to slowly improve their stats on their own. Three new Pokemon, Dedenne, Bunnelby and Skiddo, as well as a gym leader, Korrina of Shalour City, were also announced for the games. The mega-evolved version of Blaziken will only be accessed through a special distribution event via Nintendo Network starting at the game's launch for a limited time, which will grant players a free Torchic holding the Blazikenite mega stone. Pokemon X an Y will arrive on October 12 for 3DS. %Gallery-195732% %Gallery-195738%

The next games in the Pokemon series, X and Y, will feature "mega evolutions," according to a translation of a recent CoroCoro Japanese magazine by Serebii. The translation lists a number of evolved Pokemon accessible in the upcoming games, along with their abilities: MegaBlaziken (Speed Boost), MegaAbsol (Magic Bounce), MegaMawile (Huge Power), MegaMewtwo (Insomnia), MegaLucario (Adaptability) and MegaAmpharos (Mold Breaker). Serebii notes that Mawile and its mega form are Steel and Fairy types as well. MegaMewtwo was first revealed for Pokemon X and Y in April, and a video later showed its evolution from Mewtwo itself. We're going to miss calling it Mewtwo With a Handle, honestly.

A Mewtwo-like Pokemon was recently revealed by the Pokemon Company on the Pokemon Smash TV show in Japan. Set to appear in Pokemon X and Y, this unnamed creature bears a striking resemblance to the first Pokemon that fans would reserve their lone Master Ball for in Pokemon Red and Blue, Mewtwo. While the developer hasn't revealed whether the unnamed Pokemon will be a new form or evolution of Mewtwo, the Pokemon Company did specifically refer to it as a new creature. Yes, we want to call it "Mewthree" as much as you do. %Gallery-184958%

It was hard for us to trust Pokémon again after Gold and Silver came out. We had spent years learning every minute detail about the original 151, and suddenly all of that work and devotion was worthless? What's more, it needed repeating with 100 more Pokemon? We may have been young tykes, but we were old enough to feel broken.Regardless, the Kanto Pokemon still hold a special place in our hearts, and it's endearing to see one of the most awesome monsters in the OG Pokedex coming back into the fold. Starting on February 12, Mewtwo (#150 for you whippersnappers out there) will be distributed to Pokémon White/Black via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service "for a limited time."Further information about the event is forthcoming, but we do know that the legendary clone comes packing "an exclusive move that Mewtwo cannot normally learn," which we're hoping is an ability that takes us back to the days of the PokeRap and Team Rocket's original voice actors.

The Japanese site for the Pokémon 151 shirt series has opened, revealing in full the designs for all four shirts in the first set. We think it's interesting to see how different the styles are among the shirts: the Mewtwo and Articuno shirts look like promotional apparel for some European sports team, the Cubone shirt resembles a tattoo more than anything else, and the Hypno shirt has an interesting silhouette style.Oh, and just in case you thought the shirt was a bit creepy before: the full design reveals that he is kidnapping children! Either that or two kids have just decided to follow the mind-controlling monster.

We don't know when it became in vogue to dub over Pokemon cartoon clips with audio from 300's trailers, but that appears to be what's hot on the streets nowadays. And when we say "the streets," keep in mind that we mean Youtube. Some mashups are better than others, so we've pasted three of these animated adaptations for you to cast your hot-or-not votes on past the jump. If you've ever wanted to see the likenesses of King Leonidas and Mewtwo played out, today is your lucky day.[Thanks, Ali!]
