  • MGS4 360 rumor rears its eyepatch once more

Coming as proof that you just can't keep a good rumor down (just ask the 360 Blu-Ray rumor) IGN is reporting that the longstanding Xbox 360 Metal Gear Solid 4 rumor has surfaced once again. The news comes by way of a report from Morningstar, a Japanese investment research firm, which focused on multiplatform trends. In the report a Konami public relations representative, in regard to Metal Gear Solid 4, was quoted as saying, "We're actively looking into a release for the Xbox 360."As IGN notes, a single quote hardly adds up to any assurance that MGS4 will see the light of day on 360. This is especially so given that series creator Hideo Kojima has denied the rumor to the point of saying that he's tired of being asked about it in every interview. If somone doesn't make good on this rumor soon, we'll have to start one about MGS4 hitting the next Xbox.[Via Gamestooge]

This is it, soldiers. The day you've been anticipating has finally arrived. Okay, so maybe that's a build up not deserved by the lowly retail version of the Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset, but seriously, we've been waiting ages for this thing to ship. Like, so long that the whole MGS4 aura has already come and gone. Those still firmly planted in Snake's posse can choose to prove their fanhood by snagging this thing now for $59.99; if all goes well, it should be headed your way in a matter of business days. Over and out.[Via LogicBuy]

  • Kojima unhappy with Metal Gear Online, admits Konami ID 'not working well'

We recommend you read this entire interview with Hideo Kojima at 1UP -- it's filled with great revelations about MGS4 and Hideo's thoughts on the future (including MGS5).One thing did pop up in our readthrough: Hideo Kojima is unhappy with the number of people currently playing Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer portion of MGS4. Undoubtedly, the cumbersome Konami ID registration process, which requires players to write down multiple IDs and passwords simply to get into the game, became a significant barrier of entry."Honestly, officially, I can't say anything on Konami ID and Game ID. It's a company policy. But frankly speaking, the idea wasn't a very good one. The fact is that Konami's direction was that we create a Game ID and Konami ID for the online components, and now we're seeing that it's not working so well, and we have to think about how to turn it around. It was a concept of an online Konami group thinking, so there's not much I could do at the time."[Via Joystiq]

  • NPD: Top 5 best-selling PS3 games from January to August 08

The NPD, in collaboration with Gamasutra, disclosed the top 5 bestsellers for each platform today, including the PS3. Without further ado, let's take a look at what they are: Grand Theft Auto IV Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Madden NFL 09 Gran Turismo 5: Prologue Note that specific sales numbers were not provided and the final tally does not include any collector's editions, games sold via digital distribution or games bundled with a system. No one is really surprised that GTA IV, MGS4 and Madden 09 made it to the top of the charts. However, Gamasutra remarks on the tremendous momentum Call of Duty 4 has had so far in 2008, especially considering the game was released early November of 2007. They were also surprised to see Gran Turismo 5: Prologue beating out Devil May Cry 4; they even speculate that if the sales on the PS Store for Gran Turismo 5: Prologue were counted, it might have even trumped the sales of the PS3 version of Madden 09. Did any of these games surprise you guys? Is there a game you would have liked to see on the chart? Fire away in the comments below.

  • Rumor: New Metal Gear Solid title discovered

Always one to sniff out new trademarks, Siliconera points us in the direction of "Metal Gear Solid Existence." It's a name Konami filed in the Japanese Trademark database. We can't say for sure what this title will be used for -- is this some sort of new game altogether or is it the name of an MGS4 re-release a la Substance and Subsistence? It certainly seems to fit the shoe of the latter category. However, all we have to go with right now is a name; there's not enough facts and evidence to say for sure. It might not ever be used. So for now, we're filing this under 'rumors.' Perhaps with Tokyo Game Show just around the bend, we might hear of something official soon.[Thanks Kspraydad!]

SOFTIMAGE crafted XSI, software used in creating the stunning models found in Metal Gear Solid 4. Their site now offers a comprehensive (but somewhat technical) look at the process of creating Metal Gear Solid 4, using their software. For those of you that appreciate behind-the-scenes production of video game design, this is a must-read. It is lengthy, though -- so grab a cup of your favorite beverage before you begin.[Via NeoGAF]

  • Rumor: MGS4's Ryan Payton directing new Halo project

Is Metal Gear Solid 4 producer Ryan Payton directing Peter Jackson's Halo project? "Yes," comes the reply from Shacknews, corroborating (thanks, "reliable source!") a Kotaku rumor that places Payton in the "creative director" role on the forthcoming and exceedingly nebulous Halo project from Microsoft and the Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson. If true, it would mark the second major franchise to be touched by Payton, who left Kojima Productions earlier this year. We've reached out to him for comment -- and for the privilege of touching someone who's a tag on our website.

Ryan Payton has already left Kojima's stable, but that won't stop him from talking more about Metal Gear Solid 4. Speaking to 1UP, Payton reminisces on the development of MGS4, going back to the challenges of tying up all the loose ends and making things stick. "The stories of MGS2 and MGS3 were truly written without any backup measures if the series continued, leaving dozens of confusing and unexplained plot elements in the wake," stated Payton. After sorting through all that, he also took the liberty of "setting the record straight" by imposing a few corrective changes. For example, removing Mei-Ling's Chinese accent because she is in fact American born. It's tiny idiosyncrasies like that, that have landed Payton in a boiling cauldron amongst so called rabid fans. The very same fans whose reactions were a tad much: "I got dozens of hateful messages from fans including a 2,000 word short story depicting my execution." It's sad to see how one man's work at doing the right thing is reflected so negatively by a blind mass. In the end, Payton's choices were right on the money, and after reading his full thoughts, we couldn't agree with the man more.[Via Joystiq]

  • MGS4's Ryan Payton talks plot fudging and execution essays

Shortly before leaving Kojima Productions, Metal Gear Solid 4 producer Ryan Payton had a chat with 1UP, discussing the many highlights of working on one of the year's biggest blockbusters. As is often the case with this line of work, Payton was privy to several elaborate death threats. "When word hit that I chose Pat Zimmerman for Liquid Ocelot -- and not Cam Clarke -- I got dozens of hateful messages from fans including a 2,000 word short story depicting my execution."Payton also expressed a belief that the development team did a sterling job with untangling Metal Gear Solid's twisted story -- with minimal plot fudging. "The stories of MGS2 and MGS3 were truly written without any backup measures if the series continued, leaving dozens of confusing and unexplained plot elements in the wake," he said." The fact that we were able to tie up all the loose ends with MGS4 was nothing short of a miracle." Miraculous acts happen to include the amazing gender bending of not only Olga's child, but MGS1's briefly mentioned Dr. Clark. In Snake's world, anything goes.

  • Ryan Payton leaves Kojima Productions

Ryan Payton, assistant producer on Metal Gear Solid 4 and Kojima Productions' token gaijin, has decided to leave the company. "... It feels like this is how it's supposed to be. It's fate," he said in an interview with Kotaku. Working in Japan and being away from family is hitting him hard; so, when he heard some "pretty heavy news concerning [his] mom," he realized that sticking close to family was all too important. Most people will probably not remember the name 'Payton' as much as 'Kojima,' but keep in mind that it was Payton who helped develop MGS4 into a more Western-friendly title -- opening the traditionalist Japanese crew to more Western influences (which is why MGS4 plays like a charm). We wish you the best of luck Ryan in your future endeavors and hope you continue to help make amazing games. We guess you'll always have the memories ... and that awesome shirt.

  • Kojima tired of questions about MGS4 on Xbox 360

Hideo Kojima wishes that the inquiries about a Metal Gear Solid 4 port for Xbox 360 would cease. The man who the La-li-lu-le-lo answer to tells Eurogamer he longs for the day that he stops being asked the notorious question during every interview and public appearance. Ironically, Eurogamer goes ahead and asks him about the possibility of an Xbox 360 port.Kojima reiterates for the umpteenth time that MGS4 was optimized for the PS3 and a port may not be possible. He expresses, in what we're taking as a moment of frustration and spite, that he feels MGS4 should be on PC just so people stop focusing on consoles and start asking him more questions about the game itself.

The question will never die. So long as fanboys of another kind can't harness the fact that Metal Gear Solid 4 won't be going multiplat, unmitigated rumors and Kojima's frustration will live on. If Konami's multiple official denials and this in-game inside joke weren't enough, then shouldn't the golden word of the game's creator be enough to stomp out any sort of rumormongering? Apparently not, as the man -- up to now -- is still being asked the question."I've been doing a lot of interviews and stage shows," said Kojima to Eurogamer. "And half the questions are like: Will MGS4 be coming out on 360 or other formats?" Kojima reiterated to the publication that MGS4 will remain a PS3 exclusive because 1) he believed that MGS's success entwined with PlayStation and 2) MGS4 was optimized for the PS3 and wouldn't be possible with other hardware. Hopefully, this will bring an end to platform questions and, as Kojima puts it, will make people focus more on and appreciate the game itself rather than deliberating over what platform it's on. But of course, we're preaching to the choir here ... pass this bit of news onto a fellow non-PS3 gamer and help ease Kojima's suffering, okay?

Two new passwords have been revealed for Metal Gear Solid 4. Inputting the access codes in the 'Extras' menu gives players two new weapons: Thor .45-70 large-caliber hand rifle and The Boss' Patriot from Metal Gear Solid 3. Here are the two codes, respectively: tshsniammr and pkhhnwhsjt. In addition to the new codes, there's also new music for the in-game iPod titled "Battle." It's a track from the Plant Chapter in MGS2. It seems Konami is really cranking up the fan service ... and we like it!

It appears that the 80GB PS3 MGS4 bundle has finally been done in by the La-li-lu-le-lo. Our trusted Wal-Mart operative -- who has yet to fail us on a mission -- informs us the status of the bundle within the megacorp's computer is now "deleted." S/he tells us this means that there are no plans to receive any more shipments. We've contacted Sony for official word regarding any plans to restock the model. We always knew the $499 bundle was a limited edition, so this isn't exactly a "!". What we are wondering: Will the model in the bundle be repackaged with a new game? Is this the end of PS3s with any type of PS2 backwards compatibility?%Gallery-30040%

It started out as a tantalizing April Fools gag, and then evolved into a grueling Metal Gear Solid 4 unlockable. Wanna play as Snake dressed up as the 12th century assassin? Sure thing. Just earn the Assassin's Emblem: Beat the game with 50 or more knife kills, 50 or more CQC holds, and 25 or less alerts. That's the honorable way to do it, at least. But what if we told you there was an infinitely easier way to drape the cloak of the Assassins Order over your Old Snake? Would you risk being shamed by your peers? Would you utter the magic word...?

Konami is in a good mood. Well, you would too if you were touting number spikes like a 116 percent jump in net revenues. Konami is reporting massive positive growth in its first quarter earnings and no doubt a huge chunk of that is due to the success of Metal Gear Solid 4 -- which has shipped three million units worldwide on its first week. Konami stated that sales for the PS3 exclusive Solid Snake adventure were "sensational" with sales still "steadily increasing." As for all the final numbers for Konami's first quarter earnings for the period ended June 30, here they are: ¥70.8 billion ($654 million) in net revenues, operating income climbed over 165 percent to ¥11.6 billion, and net income grew about 47 percent to ¥5.66 billion ($52.3 million). Konami expects these numbers to rise to ¥330 billion, ¥45 billion, and ¥26 billion respectively for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009.

Konami announced that Solid Snake's final (?) adventure gave the company a nice macro-injection of cash. GameDaily reports the publisher saw revenues jump 116% to $656 million in the first quarter, with net income rising 47% to $52 million. Although Konami isn't just in the video game business, the company states sales of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots are "steadily increasing," noting that the games division contributed the most to its revenues.Konami continues its positive outlook for the rest of the fiscal year (ending March '09) with $3 billion in revenue and a net income of $240 million. Imagine how much more the company can make if giggle-inducing rhythm-game Rock Revolution is a hit and it wins the Rock Band lawsuit?
