Xbox One adds game sale alerts and expanded parental controls

Sometimes, the most important Xbox One updates are less about interface changes and more about conveniences -- in this case, for bargain hunters and concerned parents. Microsoft is rolling out an October update whose centerpieces are more powerful parental controls and a sale-savvy Wish List. The parental tools now let you limit time for specific apps and games, not just the system. You can ensure that your kids only play Fortnite for an hour each day, or limit their YouTube sessions to half-hour bursts. The restrictions you set will apply on both Xbox One and Windows, so your kids can't defy the rules by sneaking in some PC time when the console kicks them off.

Microsoft closes its e-book store (updated)

Did you build your e-book library through the Microsoft Store? You'll need to make a change in plans. Microsoft has not only removed books from its online portal, but plans to remove access to existing purchases and rentals in early July. It's not a complete loss when Microsoft plans to offer refunds in the form of store credit, including $25 extra if you've made annotations before April 2nd. However, that still leaves you paying to re-stock your library through a third-party service -- and any notes you've made will disappear into the ether.

It's happening. The Microsoft Store's initial list of Black Friday deals is live, featuring Xbox One and 360 consoles and video games on sale starting November 27 at 12AM ET. During the sale, you can grab the following Xbox bundles at as-yet-undisclosed discounts: the Xbox One Assassin's Creed: Unity bundle with Kinect (currently $450), the limited edition Xbox One Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare bundle without Kinect (currently $450), or a Kinect-less Xbox One Assassin's Creed: Unity bundle (currently $350). Xbox One games that will be on sale include Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Watch Dogs, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition. For Xbox 360, you should be able to snag Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Sniper Elite 3 and Thief, among others on sale. If any of these items were on your holiday wish list, maybe hold out a little while longer to see how much these bells can jingle. [Image: Microsoft Store]

  • Xbox One UK pricing drops again to £330

    by

Wherever you look, the PlayStation 4 is outselling the Xbox One by a considerable margin. In fact, Sony sold twice as many consoles in the UK as Microsoft in Destiny's launch week, leaving its rival with another considerable hill to climb. One way Microsoft could claw back some of its lost market share is to drop the price of the Xbox One, again, which is something it's decided to do today. To little fanfare, Microsoft slashed £20 off the price of the Kinectless Xbox One on its official store, meaning you'll now pay only £329.99. Amazon has reacted to the price cut too, but has gone one better by offering Sunset Overdrive White Xbox One bundle pre-orders for the exactly the same price. It means that in the space of 10 months, the console has undergone three price reductions, saving late-adopters at least £100 in the process. For the time being, the Xbox One is officially cheaper than the £349.99 PlayStation 4 (which is also the subject of some seriously good deals), but as both consoles have already dipped below the £300 mark, we're pretty sure Sony won't be too worried by today's discount.

  • Microsoft Store lists Batman: Arkham Knight for Feb. 2015

Batman: Arkham Knight rises on February 24, 2015, at least so says the Microsoft Store. While the release date remains officially unconfirmed, the MS Store's offering does lie on a Tuesday, the day of the week games are released typically in North America. NeoGAF spotted the Xbox One listing over the weekend, but when asked, Warner Bros. told Eurogamer the game "is due for release in 2015." An early 2015 arrival for Rocksteady's new-gen Arkham looks likely. Speaking to Groovey.tv earlier this month, Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy - who has some previous experience with spilling the bat-beans early - said Arkham Knight is due "next January." Conroy also noted it was originally supposed to come out in January 2014. As you're probably aware, Arkham Knight was scheduled for this year before WB pushed it back three weeks ago.
