Minecraft, for one, welcomes its new Microsoft overlords by offering The Simpsons content for Xboxen. The skin pack based on the immortal TV show arrives on Xbox One and 360 in late February, with an asking price of $2. Also, don't take our opening line too seriously; Microsoft says players should "stay tuned" for more about the DLC on other platforms. The pack features the Simpsons family as pixelated above, along with 19 characters from Springfield Elementary. Here's hoping it includes Ralph and Super Nintendo Chalmers - yes, we just wanted to write "Super Nintendo Chalmers." Of course, this isn't the first time Minecraft and The Simpsons have merged into one, uber-popular super-being. Check below the break to refresh your memory.

  • Doctor Who DLC wibbles, wobbles to Minecraft Xbox 360 [Update]

A Doctor Who skin pack (that still sounds gross) hits Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition in September, priced at $3. The pack includes the Daleks, other enemies, six Doctors and each of their companions, starting with a version based on current Doctor Peter Capaldi and his companion, Clara, played by Jenna Coleman. At least, that's what the promo images suggest. While PlayXBLA lists the included Doctor as the twelfth, Xbox Wire says this pack comes with the eleventh Doctor. The Minecraft images show Capaldi, who is the twelfth Doctor, though after that messy business with the War Doctor, an incarnation of the Doctor existing between his eighth and ninth regenerations, the whole count is out of whack. We understand that the numbers thing is a little confusing. That said, the images suggest Peter Capaldi's Doctor will appear in Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition this September, alongside Jenna Coleman and some Daleks. That's settled. This is the first of many Doctor Who skin packs, which promise to deliver "a wide selection of the best characters from the entire 50 years of Doctor Who," Microsoft says. Update: It's 100 percent, definitely, for sure the twelfth Doctor in the first Doctor Who skin pack, Microsoft tells Joystiq. Huzzah (or whatever Capaldi's catchphrase would be)!

  • Super Time Force characters invade Minecraft Xbox 360

Likely due to some paradoxical shenanigans in the time stream, the cast of Super Time Force will appear in the Xbox 360 incarnation of Minecraft with the release of Skin Pack 6. Though Skin Pack 6 has yet to receive an official release date, once it debuts, players will find six Super Time Force characters among a host of other familiar faces from notable games such as Killer Instinct, Mirror's Edge and Trials Fusion. Despite stiff competition, the Super Time Force characters are easily the most creative, if only for the inclusion of Zackasaurus, a dinosaur who eschews the terrifying majesty typical of his species in favor of laid back sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt. If you'd rather not wait to meet the Super Time Force cast, you can pick up a copy of the 2D shooter on either Xbox 360 or Xbox One right now. Our largely positive review awarded the game 3.5 of 5 stars, while stating that "[f]or some players, erecting a perfect assault on Super Time Force's stages will be an ecstatic pastime." The console versions of Mojang's Minecraft will be updated this week with new items, features, and fixes, adding a significant chunk of content to player-curated sandbox worlds. Minecraft title update 14 introduces emerald currency and villager trading, along with anvils that can be used to repair equipment. The patch also adds new edibles like potatoes and carrots, and clever players can now make the "carrot-on-a-stick" item to control pigs while riding them. Title update 14 is available now for the Xbox Live Arcade version of Minecraft. A PlayStation 3 patch is due tomorrow. [Image: Mojang]

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition developer 4J Studios is working with Microsoft to port save files for the game from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One. The developer tweeted as much today, noting that it "can't say it'll be there" until it works perfectly. Microsoft first announced during its E3 press event in June that the hit block-busting, sandbox-style construction game will come to its next-generation console. No launch date has been confirmed for either of the PS4 or Xbox One versions of Minecraft, though the developer said this week that it plans to bring the PS3 version of the game out first.

A relatively quiet week on the UK charts allows for some meditative crafting, with Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition squarely in first place. The Last of Us moves up to the second of us again, as Pikmin 3, which debuted last week in second, drops all the way off the top ten and into ... still looking ... still looking ... there it is: 15. It's not all bad news for Nintendo, as Animal Crossing: New Leaf moves up into third this week and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team stumbles ever so slightly from fifth to eleventh. The Smurfs 2 occupies fifth place, with a sales increase of 115 percent following its debut two weeks ago. That's just smurfed-up. Check out the UK top ten after the break.

After surviving for six weeks, The Last of Us' reign as UK No. 1 is over. Naughty Dog's game is blocked from the top spot by a resurgent Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, a 74 percent rise in sales seeing the XBLA game's disc version tower to the top in its fifth week at retail. Meanwhile, The Last of Us drops all the way down to third, because the runner-up spot is claimed for the first time by a Wii U exclusive. Yes, the just-landed Pikmin 3 consumes second place in the UK to become the highest-charting Wii U-only game yet, a welcome boost for the fresh-faced console. It's a positive-looking UK top ten for Nintendo all round, with 3DS games Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team comfortable in fourth and fifth. The big N almost made it four out of ten, the newly released standalone (and very green) retail version of New Super Luigi U coming in at the 13 spot.

It may not yet be quite the massive cultural phenomenon that Angry Birds is, but Minecraft is certainly no slouch in the ranks of little-games-that-could, and it's now set to expand its reach even further. Microsoft confirmed today that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition will be available for download on May 9th, with it setting you back 1600 Microsoft Points (or $20). That will apparently buy you a fairly full-featured version of the game, including a revamped crafting interface, "natural controller movements," a tutorial mode, and split-screen multiplayer in addition to multiplayer over Xbox Live. Hit the links below for a closer look at it and the rest of the games in Microsoft's "Arcade NEXT" promotion.
